How much faster than my G4?

I just ordered the 15" 2.33ghz, 160hd version of the MBP. How much faster do you think it will be than my current 15" 867mhz G4 with 768mb of ram?

Looking forward to finally be able to run Aperture - but I think I might have made a mistake ordering the 256mb version (versus 128mb) since I heard it only makes difference in 3d applications (and not Aperture)..

always go for the gusto....

Look how long it took you to get a new machine.. you had a freaking dinasour (not as old as my titanium 667 that I just sold for $500).. you deserve the best..

then again., you should have waited for the 17 inch.... :D

I believe it makes a HUGE difference in Aperture since it renders images on-the-fly and relies solely on the GPU

It's funny you say that. Half the people say it makes no difference in Aperture where as the other half says it makes a huge difference. I don't know who to believe. Anyone know for sure?

What's your FedEx shipment tracking website look like right now? Mine's in Indiana?

Same here. "International Shipment Release"

-Did you get the expedited shipping?
-Looks like both our computers are in the same shipment coming to Southern California. Hopefully we get it before Monday.

Yeah, Southern California: SB and HB (not HMB), respectively. And nope; I got standard shipping, and it was supposed to ship on the 31st to arrive on the 6th or something. Then all of a sudden, it shipped out on the 25th. I'm not complaining, but now I'm just checking the FedEx website like crazy to check on the status, hoping it doesn't get delayed or something.

If you're using it on a desktop computer everything is just the same, maybe a little cleaner. If you're on a notebook computer then there are a few differences. Since Boot Camp is still a beta, tapping on the trackpad will not work. And you right click by holding down the right apple key and then clicking (no, ctrl-click does not work). This method of right clicking works in every game I played, I even felt it was good enough for right clicking in Counter Strike (yes, I play with my trackpad not a mouse). But GTA does not identify the apple-click in the game, you gotta assign some other button. So right click works in most games by apple-clicking, but for some games you gotta find out what the substitute is.

I could easily use a mouse right?

Does your website say: IP Direct Distribution?

Yeah, what's that supposed to mean? I'm so ridiculously in the dark about this.

International Priority Direct Distribution. They don't offer Saturday deliveries. However, they might be able to hold it on sat for pickup and/or it might be delivered tomorrow (which I highly doubt); the phone support is closed until 8am so we won't know till tomorrow morning.

No way! Damnit. I was looking forward to getting it Saturday, if anything. I doubt it's going to get here tomorrow, although, I wonder how long it takes to go through the processes? Maybe a slight possibility? Eh.

Actually now that I think about it, there is a good chance it might get here tomorrow. Our packages are in flight from Indianapolis straight to California as we speak. FedEx works around the clock so it will definitely be here tomorrow. Its just a matter of getting on the morning truck for routine deliveries.

EDIT: It takes a flight from Indianapolis to California 4 1/2 - 5 hours, however, because of the different time zones it will seem to take 1 1/2 hours. (eg: from IND @ 1200am ---> 4 hours later arrives at LAX @ 130am (~430 IND time))

What are your ship times like? I'm hoping mine will make it, since it left at 2AM. That should be about a 4-5 hour plane trip, plus any other additional check-ins. Just a guess?

Because of the ~3 hour time zone difference it will get here in only 1 1/2 hours (see my EDIT above).

Earlier, somebody asked how much of a performance hit you get from 3gb instead of dual-channel 2gb RAM. Can anybody comment a little more on this? I assume the 3gb would still show a performance increase over 2gb, but does losing dual channel really make a huge difference?

Thanks!

YESSS! I'm guessing/hoping it'll arrive today. But 1.5 hours on top of what time? 2AM time is 11PM PST? So it'll arrive at about 4-5AM at most?

From Anandtech.com:

"The MacBook Pro features Intel's 945 Express chipset, but opts for a faster external graphics solution rather than rely on Intel's integrated graphics. Being based on the 945 of course means that it features a dual channel DDR2-667 memory controller, but in order to take advantage of that you have to populate both SO-DIMM slots on the MacBook Pro. There is no performance benefit however to enabling dual channel mode; remember that the Core Duo only features a 64-bit wide 667MHz FSB, and without integrated graphics a single 64-bit DDR2-667 channel can offer enough bandwidth to saturate that bus. If the future MacBooks (non-pro) do ship with integrated graphics, you may want to install memory in pairs as dual channel will matter there.

To confirm that dual channel does nothing I ran a couple of tests with a single 1GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMM vs. 2 x 512MB DDR2-667 SO-DIMMs:..."

http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2740&p=4

The new C2D MBPs still uses the 945 chipset so it doesn't change that fact.

On top of PST time. So yeah, we will probably get it tomorrow.

And can you put in 2 sticks of 2GB 667Mhz RAM? Or it will just burn the motherboard?

4-5 AM is already estimating PST, but I'm just gonna cross my fingers and see. I won't be able to do much with it anyway, with Halloween weekend coming up and all... :p

This weekend is gonna be off the hook in SB. The thing is my friend who is buying my current computer is coming up this friday and I would like to have a computer before I hand it off to him.

P.S. Where in So Cal do you live? If you're in IV this weekend hit me up.
