soooo... it is basically just ***** ridiculous to buy a 15 inch screen unless ... .. unless.. unless.... unless??????? unless why?

Well, I'm still in high school. I lug my computer and books around all day, and a few pounds makes a difference. Also, in some of my classes, they have the chairs with the fold out little desks, and the 17" doesn't even fit. For the record, I primarily use my mac for music notation/recording using Sibelius 4 Pro, Cubase and yes, GarageBand.

Well, for some people it's the perfect size. Bigger than 13": big enough to display two word docs side by side, or Keynote + palettes. Smaller than 17" (obviously :p), which is useful when space is a premium. For example, I'm in grad school, and we have "bench" style tables in our lecture rooms. With our laptops, books and power bricks, there really isn't much space left over. If I were to bring a 17" in, I would feel like I'm crowding others and myself.

The 15" is a great size for doing work on, browsing the web or watching a DVD...imho. :D

Now go do your own research.

I am doing my research.. I am eager and enthusiastic to hear peoples reasons for purchasing a 15 inch over a 17 inch.. just because the conversation is not titilating for you, does not give you reason to throw tan bark at the other kids.. now take afreaking time out... :)

No, you're not doing your research, because if you were then you would have seen that there was an argument a few pages back about whether the small jump in price is justified. No one can decide for you- our job is done. Furthermore, in addition to the thread I personally linked, there are numerous posts in other threads. Even the information comparing the two PowerBooks is still applicable. It looks like you're the one that needs the time out.

1. Fits on my lap perfectly, the 17" does not.
2. Not as imposing out in public or in class
3. Even though the price difference is only $200 if you get the specs of the 15" model comparable to those of the 17" model, the stock "low end" 15" is still a great deal.
4. Weight. It's heavier. Not by much, but it can easily make a difference when you're carrying an army of books with you.

Honestly, it's just personal preference. Figure out what you value MOST when you're on the run and out of the house with your laptop and go from there. If you value your screen space when you're out of the house and/or don't have an external display at home, go for the 17" model. If you value your physical space and want to save a few inches in your bag and a few pounds off your back, then go for the 15" model.

This argument is exactly like the glossy/matte debate: it all boils down to preference, and nothing more.

Yeah for me 15" is the perfect size for a laptop. 13" is to small and 17" is just a little big.

New here, I ordered this on wednesday night...

Processor: 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2x1GB
Hard Drive: 160GB Serial ATA Drive@5400rpm
Optical Drive: SuperDrive 6X
Display: 15" Glossy Widescreen Display
Modem: None
Apple Software Solutions: None
Keyboard/Mac OS Language: BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
Country Kit/AEX: Country Kit

Was going to stick with free shipping, but then called today to get it bumped up. (Now it's on overnight shipping).

The Apple guy said my MBP was being assembled and shipped from California. - and the only reason for anymore delay would be Customs.

I will advise on the 160GB HD as soon as possible (unless someone beats me to it).

Cheers!

What did they charge you for the overnight shipping?

How come you can't just go into the apple store and ask.. "Excuse me, is the 160 GB HD in the MBP just as fast as the 100 GB HD?" and get an answer from some one who actually knows...

Do they brief the employees on these things? I asked a couple guys at the store and they said the 7200rpm drive was faster. Then I told them some of the things I have read on this site (stating the drives are equal in speed).. and they chaged their tune to..., "Well, we actually don't know which is faster?"

How are we suppose to make a decision if the guy who works at the apple store does not know? Are we suppose to rely on BILL for everything? he can only handle so much...

cheers

I'm curious, too... I ordered mine last Wednesday night as well and went with 2 day shipping. Well, the stupid status at Apple.com states that it won't ship until this coming Tuesday (!!) and I won't have it until November 3 (!!). This wait period is killing me.

Hard drive performance really relies on what you use it for. If you are always accessing large files from all over the drive, than your performance will take a hit.

Dude, you're being unrealistic. Do you understand how much a retail employee gets paid? How can you expect them to be hardware experts without the cost of the products skyrocketing to cover some pimply retail clerk's salary?

The point is, if you have to ask, is it really doesn't matter because you will never see the difference anyway unless you are a professional at something - in that case you would just get the top of the line because the price would not be an issue if it was justified by the return.

I have it way worse. I had to order through an authorized reseller because I have a business account there, and they don't even mention ship dates. I am completely in the dark.

exactly... can you tell me which is the top of the line.. the 160 or the 100...?? Please tell me... please!!!!

LOL

and i am not blaming the employees. I am not blaming anybody.. I am trying to figure out what the truth is...

cheers

very interesting thanks.. yes I will be accessing large files... FCP....

but which drive can handle the "HIT" better...?

It sounds like it is more complicated, than just ....which drive is faster.. which explains why the question may not have a reliable answer..

cheers
