The difference in size isn't marginal though. I have also seen the two side-by-side the the 17" is just too big. If I need more viewing area then I'll buy an LCD monitor. I'm buying a laptop so I can take it wherever, whenever, and the 17" is too big. Let's agree to disagree.

fair enough. my opinion is that if you lay the 2 closed machines on top of each other, the difference is size is less than the width of your finger around. to me, thats marginal, to you, it may not be.

i agree to disagree as well.

Yes. Normally a higher resolution is better, but in some situations lower is better. The 15" has a native resolution of 1440x900, while the 17" is 1680x1050.

And when you think about it, 1440 x 900 is the "typical" screen size for most 17" screens, and 1680 x 1050 for 20" screens - like the iMac line.

The 17" MBP is a beast. No thanks. $200 more? Yes. Noticeably bigger and heftier? Oh yes! 5.6lbs to 6.8lbs many not seem like a lot, but when you have a bag full of books and your laptop... every pound counts.

I'm just glad they actually made the 15" model "Pro" again and included the dual-layer superdrive and Firewire 800 once again... and like I'm sure Steve would say: "It's still only 1 inch thin!"

working

i work at the mac store in St. Louis and we were allowed to pre-order the c2d 17" with whatever upgrades we wanted "needed". so that is how i knew it was coming out. it only took 3 weeks cause it delivered with the new c2d 17"

my 15-inch MBP with a 160GB drive just shipped from China today. I was originally quoted shipment on November 1st, delivery Nov. 3rd and it shipped today with delivery Nov. 1st

Mine too! Mine too! It just shipped from China today! The estimated delivery was Nov 3rd tho. But my gut says it's arriving sometime Nov. 1st !! =)

anyone who wants a larger, higher-rez screen, longer battery life, faster DVD burner, extra firewire port, full speed GPU that ramps to the task at hand and a machine that historically has had much, MUCH less problems with heat and mooing than the 15.

why would you not spend $200 for that?

and i assure you i do not have any intention of characterizing anyone as stupid, only some of their logic. so if i have offended anyone in that respect, you have my apologies.

You wouldn't spend $200 extra for that if you wanted a 15" laptop instead of a 17" one. I'm not sure why this is so hard to understand.

If you don't care about the size difference or cost difference though, then yes, the 17" MBP is a great value too.

Seriously, I don't get why everyone is getting into pissing matches over stuff like this. Apple offers a lot of nice choices for people; that is a GOOD thing; it covers the bases of what different people's preferences or needs are.

It's like the glossy vs. matte debates; all these people trying to paint glossy or matte as the only sensible choice, and apparently getting pissed off at anyone who disagrees at which is best.

It's not like Apple is forcing people to choose or only offering one option. So why are we even debating this stuff?

wait a minute.... you ordered a 17 inch MBP?... and when is it suppose to arrive?

cheers

And the difference in size between a MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro when you place them on top of each other also isn't that different either....... but people notice it, and it does make a difference for some people in choosing a machine.

nope. still lying. it is very well known and proven that apple store employees have zero knowledge of a new machines coming out, and even if you factor in the receiving clerk in the store knowing about a shipment coming in, there is no way that the shipment would come in more than 2 weeks before the announcement.

on top of which apple store employees are not allowed to be on these forums, so i hope you real last name is not Hechler or you have a problem.

But Apple didn't tell ANYONE, including Apple Store employees, when the new models were coming out or what specs and options there would be. if they did, you can guarantee there would have been leaks from "anonymous" sources.

I don't buy it.

sorry, I wanted the debate. because I am pathetically lookng for an excuse to get the 15 inch model in case the 17 inch model does not come out by wednesday.. since I am leaving the country on thursday.. So I was hoping to hear some convincing arguments on why the 15 inch was the COMPUTER of choice.

cheers

It's more portable and cheaper.

Because we don't have our new C2D's to play with yet, that's why.:) I'm sure we'll shut up when they get here.

And yeah, I totally agree with you. Get what works best for you, the other options are not "wrong" just because you don't prefer them.

And I still like glossy....*ducks*

are those the same people who can only have a red computer..??

LOL.. just mess'in

walking to starbucks.. see you all later.... for more frustration. while we wait..

when i ge back I want to talk about the airplane adapters.. sounds like they suck!!!

im not stupid enough to use my real name on a forum, and yes we do know when new computers are coming in, else how would we advertise for it? or know when it was coming in when people ask us? yes we do get plenty of perks, just not money off, :-(

nope. you keep proving yourself wrong. apple does not advertise for anything until it has been announced, so i do not even know what you are talking about. and apple store employees do not know when stuff is coming in when people ask them, because they all say "i do not know" when you ask them about future product.

seriously, stop now.

you dont advertise and the clerks never KNOW ****...

iloveyou

we do know, we just dont tell anybody cause we hate stupid customers that ask when stuff is coming in, it will be in when its in. and we do advertise, look around the store, theres posters everwhere advertising different computers

i wonder if you are even aware of the hole you keep digging? this is getting entertaining.

We should really ask dhechler questions he could actually answer...

"When's the McRib coming back?":p
