this guy is lying thru his teeth. a n00b that makes his first post about how he got a new machine out of a store that custom on stuff nobody else has gotten and now it turns out he ordered it 3 weeks ago?

please.

Agreed, especially as tight-lipped Apple is about releases...Steve J. probably didn't even know about the new Macbook 3 weeks ago :)

he is lying, don't worry about it.

look at the way he even made his post - the same way it comes on the apple order page. if he picked it up in person at the store he would not even have a place in any electronic documentation where it looks like that, and if he ordered it 3 weeks ago, it would read as the CD machine, not the C2D.

he is full of crap.

why would anybody get the 15 inch MBP? when the 17 inch is only a few bones more..

please explain..

am I missing something?

cheers

Also, in the UK the 17" MBP is about £500 more then the basic 15" model. Its also very large, and in my eyes is more of a mobile desktop then a laptop.

what.. perfect size...? When is 17 inches to big?
please explain...

What's this "the 17 inch is only a few bones more.."? It's starts off at $800!

Not to be obvious, but um....size. Some prefer a smaller laptop. I love my 12" G4 PB and if there were a 12" MBP that's what I'd be buying. I use my laptop to record concerts (legally) and the 12" was great because at outdoor fests I had my little folding stool, on which sat my M-Audio FW410 preamp on top of which my powerbook went. I'm a little worried that the 15" is going to be too large, but I don't see a 12" update in the future. A 17" would just be out of the question for feild recording where space is never guaranteed, imho.

Interseting. I just can't imagine 15 inches being ok. and 17 inches being to big.. I had a 15 inch for 4 years and I am soooo looking fowrad to a 17 inch..

When you get the computers juiced up to the hilt, the price difference is less than $300.

I appreciate all your input.

Upgrade video card

Hi,

I'm planning to get a new MBP soon (waiting to hear from my uni on what kind of an edu discount I can get -- does anyone know what is the range I might expect beyond the 7% standard) but I would like to ask a few questions in the meantime.

I want to go with a lower-end model and avoid 256 MB ram in the video card. Is this something I can upgrade later?

Also, has anyone done any more conclusive tests on the battery life. A few people have had the new MBPs for a few busy days (of being harassed by the rest of us) so I was wondering if someone can post a good average battery life, in a similar vein to this old review:

many thanks

A few days ago? I didn't put up the ads until yesterday morning (Saturday), and only after my website hit 4 gigs of downloads.

And glad I did, as I got "slashdotted" sometime overnight....bandwidth is not free...however I am glad the information will get out to more people than just the macrumors crowd...

Still taking questions...send them in to mbp(at)charter.net

Ok well I thought I saw them on Friday evening here. No big deal, its understandable that bandwidth isn't free.

The video card is not upgradeable, and you can't add extra VRAM to it.

The other hidden factor is resolution. In some cases, a lower native resolution is preferrable. When rendering 3D graphics, such as in a gaming situation, a lower resolution can yield considerable performance benefits, especially when dealing with the rather weak X1600.

a similarly spec'd 17 and 15 are only $200 apart in price.

i think the 17 is perfect and anyone who says that its not portable is kidding themselves.

Many things are "portable"; but for a lot of situations, a 17" laptop is not as pleasant to use, and it does take up more space, requires a larger case, etc.

Seriously, the X1600 isn't that weak. In the class of 15" notebooks it is a very solid card. It's only "weak" related to the super-high-end GPU's like the 7900GS and X1800.

please explain further.. does a 15 inch have lower "native resolution" ?

FYI - I will primarily use my MBP for FCP and Motion.

Yes. Normally a higher resolution is better, but in some situations lower is better. The 15" has a native resolution of 1440x900, while the 17" is 1680x1050.

Yeah, I wouldn't upgrade a lower end model to meet a higher end one. You usually end up getting a better value on the higher end model for a few dollars more.

I still think that the $1799 model is MORE the enough.

Well, like I mentioned, I'd rather have the 12" but will settle for 15". The preamp my comp has to sometimes rest on is only 9 1/4" by 7"

But lately my G4 PB is having problems keeping up with the audio recording and stalls out, so I'm hoping an upgrade will help that.
