I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we wouldn't be buying Macs if we didn't want to run OSX.

However, some things are not as easy (or impossible to do) under OSX. Prime example: Figure out the clock speed of the graphics hardware - hence the ATI utility for windows. Also, 3dMark05/06 is the de-facto benchmark for 3D hardware and consistent across all types of hardware. It's just unfortunate there is no OSX version.

So don't sweat it man. OSX is fantastic - don't get me wrong - but its not everything to everyone and it certainly doesn't run everything...

Perhaps you forgot to take your fanboi meds this morning? ;)

Hehe, that's the problem...I never take fanboi meds... ;)

Best HD on 15" or 17" mbp
Graphic card caped or not, benchs?
Ram?
Superdrive?
Temp?
Airport?
Battery?
general quality?

Thanks, we have a lot pages and its dificult take a conclution.

cheers.

Thread Summary
Lots of information, benchmark results etc are here: http://lartren.com/mac/

HDD: Looks like 160GB is probably PMR, 120GB LMR. Some conflict about how fast 200GB would be. General consensus was that 160GB was probably fastest.

Graphics: Less underclocked than old version. Seem pretty quick. View benchmarks in link above. 128MB probably enough for most people, 256MB better though. Depends on what you need the machine for.

Superdrive: Not really discussed.

Temp: Bigger air vents on the back compared to previous MBP. Seems to run quite a bit cooler. (6 big ones vs 73 tiny ones)

Airport: Seems to support the current draft 802.11n spec in some form. Can use DLink drivers in Windows if this is required. Strength is good, maybe slightly better.

Battery: Dunno yet. Maybe lasts slightly longer.

Quality: Seems good. Perhaps the warping of the lid remains (one person mentioned this). Also the isight indicator light is invisible near the camera unless it is active (very tiny holes now in frame).

Screen: Tilts back about the same as the previous MBP, or maybe slightly more. Not sure whether it's 120, ~130 or 135 degrees.

Matte or Glossy: Same discussions as ever. Go into a store and choose what suits YOU best.

Well, my order for a 17" MacBook Pro with a full UK specification to be delivered in Belgium took another slide yesterday. For some reason Apple seems to be having enormous difficulties in getting this order right (last seen I was getting one with a Belgian AZERTY keyboard with Finnish manuals/plugs) so yesterday my original order (with delivery for the 14th November) was cancelled and a new one placed since I'd also decided to upgrade the hard drive to the 200GB one based on reports that it's actually quite fast. This sounded like a good idea since the current order was still screwed up and it was also turned that the 2nd MagSafe that I'd requested was one for a 60W MacBook rather than 85W MacBook Pro. The new order was placed and this morning I'm seeing my order pushed back to the 20th November and the keyboard/country kit is still screwed up (yes, Belgian keyboard and Finnish country kit again). At this rate it is looking like I should have simply got my sister in London to buy it for me from the Regent Street Apple Store and mailed it to me with my FedEx 75% discount.

Guess I'll be calling Apple again on Monday when the store telephone lines open again and I can try my luck for the 4th time...

If you wanted the 200GB HD, your sister could not have helped you much. Regent Street will only carry the stock configurations from next Tuesday. Any BTO options have to be ordered via the online store for delivery.

My betting is that there will be so many orders for the 160GB, that it will become the stock config for the 2.33GHz model in short order. Why is your order taking so long? I ordered the 2.33 MBP with the 160GB HD yesterday evening and it will ship Nov 2 for delivery by the 9th - and probably sooner if other people's experience is anything to go by.

Don't think it will happen anytime soon. I bet people said similar thing about the 120GB HDD for the Rev 1 MBP, but they took barely more than half a year to release Rev 2.

I second this. Mine also have a shipping date of Nov 2 and delivery 9th. =)

That looks to be the time that the 15.4" will arrive in the UK. I ordered mine Thursday morning and I too have those same dates. I imagine it's probably the same even if it was ordered on Tuesday afternoon. Fingers crossed it comes a bit sooner :D

I think Apple just hates me at the moment. My original order (that I placed on the day of the announcement) was cancelled yesterday in order to try and resolve some of the problems and get the 200GB drive. I presume that this is what has caused the delay in the second order unless anyone can cite a new 17" order in the last day or so that is scheduled for delivery sooner than the 20th Nov. Anyway, I'll be called Apple (again) tomorrow to find out what the heck is going on as I haven't even received an email confirmation of the second order yet.

For anyone interested, this is what I am currently seeing:

I Tried To Do Handbrake Test Friday Morning

Has anyone done a Handbrake test on their C2D MacBook Pros yet? This is a monster of a thread to sift through.
I tried to do it Friday morning but when I got to the Santa Clara Valley Fair Mall Apple Store they still had not recieved any. :( I live a 70 mile RT so not easy for me to do it again until I make that drive again for the next Fry's deal.

Fry's is selling 400GB PATA/100 Seagates w/16MB buffers for $100 this weekend - limit 4 per checkout. Love those $100 400/ATA's for my external FW boxes. :D

Order Status Update / Shipping Notification

Has any one seen their order status change or have received notification of shipping in the past 24 hours.

It appears that things have gotten quite for the weekend.

I wish there were sunday shipments to the apple stores. I just know that fedex has a huge stack of 2.33ghz glossy machines just sitting in a warehouse waiting for me to pick from.

Come to papa little mbp. It is nice and comfortable in my house, with all the electricity you need to stay happy and healthy...

Yeah, had too much to drink last night and mybrain feels like it was run over by a truck.

New Feature Here Links Us Back To All Quoted Posts

I just discovered one of the new features added with that update Friday night. Now when we quote a post right next to the quoted poster's name is a little grey-blue link button that lets us go back to the original quoted post. This is fantasticly helpful.

Congrats and thanks to the MacRumors Forums software developers. All the more reason to always use the quote button whenever you are answering or replying to another's post so we can keep track of whom you are referring to. :)

Boom!

Apple's finally gone and done it.

They've invented TRANSPARENT ALUMINIUM!*

This is insanely great! What next? Completely see-through MacBooks!

*Or Scotty passed on the secret to Steve before died. Didn't he use a PowerBook in the Star Trek movie that they used TransAlu in to transport the whale? :)

Hi guys,

just in case you haven't noticed. And this is probably a good thing for guys that have just received their new shiny MBP C2D!!! (Congratulations guys!)

Go to the links below. But also please check your new MBP for the iSight indicator? Is what these guys were saying true?

Envious!!

I have way more personal experience with Macs on my little Pinky than you have on your whole body lady. 22 Years Lady. You have One. Why are you attacking/insulting me?!? Leave me alone.

Dude what is your deal? Chill out, its annoying to see you post on every page of this thread ranting about something or someone.

Star Trek IV was from 1986, so there weren't any PowerBooks around yet. He did use what I believe was a Mac Plus though (this is where the gag comes in where he is trying to talk to the computer, and one of the engineers tells him to use the mouse, so he picks the mouse up and tries to talk into it).

It's great isn't it. I think MacRumors forum software is the best out there. Some of the photography forums I frequent are really painful to use after coming from here.

Thanks for that - I knew he used a Mac of some sort. Wow, was it really 20 years ago... gulp.

A keyboard, how quaint ;-)

This is how it's done

Those holes are absolutely tiny.

.... a few things here:

-heating?
-any mooing?
-does the wifi card show up as 802.11n under windows?
-model number+manufacturer of the hard drive? (under system profiler)
-airport reception?
-real-life battery use w/ the apps you use?
-is the GPU underclocked?

and lastly, i just want to get a physical confirmation that the new units do not have the easy access HD bay, which everyone THINKS they do not, but nobody actually knows yet.

(thanks to rocketman for his post here)

EDIT: added GPU question

-heating: mine runs really cool, but I don't think I done anything taxing besides surf the web & run iTunes...
-any mooing: No mooing (knock on wood)
-does the wifi card show up as 802.11n under windows: not running windows just yet
-model number+manufacturer of the hard drive: FUJITSU MHW2120BH
-airport reception: its at it's max
-real-life battery use w/ the apps you use: no history yet
-is the GPU underclocked: not sure how to get this...

my 15-inch MBP with a 160GB drive just shipped from China today. I was originally quoted shipment on November 1st, delivery Nov. 3rd and it shipped today with delivery Nov. 1st
