Curious if that wouldn't be a cheaper way to get Vista than waiting to buy Vista when it ships? What does everyone think? Is Business Vista the top version like XP Pro? Can I get an opinion from the Windows folks please? Won't the top Vista sell for more than $199? Is Business Vista the 64-bit version? Or is all of Vista 64-bit anyway?

The top of the line Vista is Ultimate which has the media features of Home and the enterprise features of Business. All versions of Vista come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. But, unlike OS/X you need to choose to install one or the other, and in the x64 version you need all new drivers that are 64 bit and apps that do not break under 64 bit (which is a real issue). Under OS/X the kernel and all drivers are 32 bit and the same as before so all the existing devices work. Applications can be either 32 or 64 and both run under the same OS with no emulation. So under OS/X there should be no more breakage in going to Leopard than any other release, while Vista is going to have serious issues in migrating to 64 bit.

I'm curious, too... I ordered mine last Wednesday night as well and went with 2 day shipping. Well, the stupid status at Apple.com states that it won't ship until this coming Tuesday (!!) and I won't have it until November 3 (!!). This wait period is killing me.

ouch. I ordered Wednesday morning at 2 am. Got my Office 2004 the next day. Shipped mbp on the 30th (29th, PST)at 1am from shanghai as opposed to originally estimated Oct 31. Hopefully you get bumped up too. is yours BTO?

i'm getting mine by wednesday.

sherway clarification

lemme just clarify things at the sherway store before i get flogged with PMs

friday night - i went into the appl store to check the difference between matte and glossy before making my adc purchase. the salesperson said they were expecting their first shipment friday night / saturday morning

sunday 3pm - i was passing by so i went in and asked the sales person to check the stock on all 3 models and 2 screen types of the mbp c2d. he disappeared into the back for 3-4 minutes and came back and told me they had them all. i didnt ask how many of each and trusted what he said and moved on to drooling over the 30" acd. they closed at 5pm

i would give them a call before dropping by

hope that clears things up for people

I am interested in knowing if the 17" has 6 wider vents or 7 same size vents. Anyone who gets the 17" please let us know ASAP. Thank you for your consideration.

May I ask why this is so important? I mean -- it's not like the fate of the world (probably not even that of your second cousin's chihuahua ) depends on it

the store is closed right now ... open at 10am tomorrow morning
no i didnt see it with my own eyes, but i asked the salesguy to check and he said they had them in all 3 models and 2 screen types. but as i said, this was at 3pm today and don't know what happened between then and closing time (5 pm). i also know they just got the shipment friday night / saturday morning. cheers

not that I don't trust you.. but I was told by two other stores that they had 17 inch MBPs . then when i told them to hold the computers for me "I am coming now to purchaseit"... they double checked and they said.."oops sorry, it is the old 17 inch MBP we have in stock.. "

I would love to get a second siting somewhere else on the net.

cheers

Can we please for the love of God keep this thread on topic?

Can anyone who has had their MBP for at least a few days comment on what they are getting on average for battery life. I know people have stated what the battery meter displays after a full charge, but it would be nice to hear what people are actually getting on average.

% Larger Screen

Where are you getting that number from? If the screens are the same aspect ratio, which they are, and one is 17" diagonal and the other 15.4", then the areas are related by 17^2 / 15.4^2 = ~1.22. Or am I missing something?

The 17 does have 36% more pixels than the 15.4. This implies either a higher dpi, or that the 17 is actually a bit larger. To get the area ratio you quote, though, the 17 would have to have a 17.8" diagonal, which I am pretty sure it does not.

However, if it were 33.7% bigger, that would change my previous calcluations, so that the screen would only have to draw 40% of the power for a 15 to last as long on one battery as a 17. Still probably higher than the maximum fraction the screen can draw.

My first post, anyway I did the 17 inch versus 15.4 inch screen size math using actual screen area because the dot pitch on the two different lcd's may not be the same. The verdict:

17" screen in 21.86% larger in area than 15.4" screen, So I can confirm the 22% figure. Trust me, I am an engineer.

I also am thinking about buying a C2D MacBook Pro this Christmas. Yes even an engineer can "switch."

Opening angle

Will someone with a new C2D please take a picture of it from the side with the lid completely open. We are all dying to see what this angle is.

hmm, ****, now I'm disappointed! Why do those freaks write 135° in their manual if it's only 120° and why the hell don't they understand that this is a big issue!!!

To the guys that apparently measured the display angle on C2D MBPs, it is definitely NOT 129°, it's less, if it is the same as Rev A MBPs. I suppose you did not measure correctly. The only MBP is 120° and nothing else. The Powerbook was roughly 135°. That's a huge difference!!

To those who don't understand my and Multimedia's eagerness about this:
- one cannot properly read the screen when sitting straight up (not hanging) and using the MBP sitting on his legs, go and try it sitting noramally
- one cannot achieve a proper viewing angle while standing in front of a table
- proper head/display angle is also important because the iSight is no ultra wide angle and can only work if you sit perpendicularly in front of it.

Huh? How do you know it's less than 129? I've seen people report it is indeed 135, do you have a new MBP that you tried this on? Sorry if you do, you just haven't made this clear.

If someone posts a nice profile shot it would I could overlay a unit circle and get a very accurate measurement. There is a big difference between 2*pi/3 and 3*pi/4 radians.

Thanks, I had read both of these reviews, but neither one spoke to the specific demands of audio recording - (and why would they?).

I was more interested in hearing from someone who does a lot of work with Logic or Reason if the 7200 is necessary - if it's worth sacrificing the extra 60GB of space for the extra speed. I had always heard that 7200 rpm was a minimum for good audio recording; I just wanted to be sure that's still the case, especially given advances in read/write technology (e.g. this PMR vs. LMR technology).

That said, never would I choose a 4200 rpm drive, even were I not interested in recording audio. I really believe these people are going to notice lags.

In general, the 5400RPM drive is actually faster because of the PMR technology. I assume that holds true for audio recording as well.

Even if you have a fast 5400 rpm drive in your machine, if that drive is only a 20 GB or 40 GB model, you'll see a real performance increase moving to an 80 GB or larger drive even if the rotational speed is lower. Grab yourself a large drive with a fast rotational speed, and you'll be rewarded with greatly increased performance.

awesome thanks

"got your C2D MBP? please tell us..." Can you read?

It was a joke.

Has anyone noticed that MacMall is selling the new MBP's with WinXP installed? I was just about to pull the trigger at the Apple online store, but now I'm not sure...

I also second the request for battery life info.

I noticed that a while ago. Personally I think it's best to buy direct from Apple. There's much less hassle that way in the event of a problem. It's easy enough to install Windows on your own anyway.

Again, unless you record audio, your suppositions and that review don't mean much to me. No offense, they just don't. Audio people have never used that logic when choosing their drives because the demands for audio are different than every day drive usage. The drive has to be able to sustain a high transfer rate.

Now, it may be that the 5400 PMR drives do sustain those rates, but I would like to hear from someone using Logic or Digital Performer who might have experience with a drive using this technology. Not a layperson who has probably never recorded audio. This isn't something you do half-assed.

It's like telling me that a point and shoot 3.5 megapixel digital camera will be fine for my freelance photography gigs because some guy said in a review that it has a larger zoom so therefore it must be better.

Hey guys..

I just uploaded a side pic for your measument pleasure, as well as a couple shots of the rear vents...including one close enough to see some components inside..

Once again, glad to help.
