Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160 Is Really Fast As Well As Big • 200 Toshiba Is Too Slow

After seeing my brother have a mac for a while, I decided I wanted to make the switch too but was waiting for this update to come out. So at last, I just ordered my first mac. Estimated delivery is 11/21/06. Feels like so far away. :( But eh, time flies.

MBPRO 17/2.33 CTO
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2x1GB
200GB Serial ATA Drive@4200rpm
SuperDrive 8X
17" Widescreen Display
No Modem
BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
Country Kit

Umm, I'm having second thoughts about the 200 gb drive after reading this review. I think I'm going to cancel it and change it to the 160 gb. Opinions?
I see what you mean. The 160 Seagate is really fast. Although we don't know for certain yet, I'll bet the stock 17" 160's are Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160. Seagate has a significant longstanding relationship with Apple as one of their primary HD suppliers. I'd be shocked if it's not.

Please people. Be considerate of other people's time here and try to always provide links. There are far too many posts to make it possible to find links you mention without a lot of time consuming work.

Please link to all referenced reviews. What review where? I agree the 200 is probably much slower. But I would like to read the review you reference without a link to it. You didn't even quote the post where the review link is located.

From my point of view pixel quantity-resolution is what matters not physical dimensions.

In my original post, from which you "corrected" my size comparison, the issue was relative power usage by the 17" vs 15.4" screen. This should be proportional to area. The question had nothing to do with how much "better" the 17" screen is than the 15.4". Aside from the intent of the comparison, in the factual statement you were disagreeing with I was specifically comparing the areas of the screens.

Please read more carefully before making repeated large "corrections".

If Apple Offered A 1920 x 1200 - 17" Screen I Would Buy That Option

Please forgive my oversight. I didn't mean to make you wrong. My sincere apologies. Good point. I'm into more resolution than I am into bigger physical screens. If I could get 1920 x 1200 in 17" I would exercise that option.

Explanatin Of What 135º Is

135 is at the red line, and its not, but it could be due to perspective. If the picture was straight on we could tell for sure.

135º is half way between vertical and horizontal 90º + 45º = 135º. That is where it is - half way. :D

It looks a little less because the photo is not dead on from the side. I love the photo work though. You guys deserve a medal for effort. Who did that composite with all the angles in color? Fantastic work! Love you all.

Thanks, I had read both of these reviews, but neither one spoke to the specific demands of audio recording - (and why would they?).

I was more interested in hearing from someone who does a lot of work with Logic or Reason if the 7200 is necessary - if it's worth sacrificing the extra 60GB of space for the extra speed. I had always heard that 7200 rpm was a minimum for good audio recording; I just wanted to be sure that's still the case, especially given advances in read/write technology (e.g. this PMR vs. LMR technology).

That said, never would I choose a 4200 rpm drive, even were I not interested in recording audio. I really believe these people are going to notice lags.

Sorry if this is late...I use the M-Audio FW410 on a regular basis with my 1.33Ghz G4 PB/512 RAM/4200rpm 60GB HD to do live audio recording using Spark XL.

To be honest, when it works, it works perfectly (ie, no noticable pitch/tempo issues in the recorded audio) but lately I've been having errors that say "Buffer not filled with valid data" where the recording simply stops until I'm able to hit "Ok" and then "Record" again. I'm hoping upgrading to the C2D MBP fixes this issue. Maybe it's something to do with Spark XL (which is no longer supported).

On this topic, sorry for the noobish question, since the FW410 has the 6 pin FW inputs, can I connect it to the FW800 with the right cable (9pin to 6pin) and get the faster speed or does the M-Audio box have to specifically be FW800 able? The FW410 powers itself from the laptop when connected 6 pin to 6 pin...will that still be the case with the FW800 (assuming I can use it)?

So all that said, I doubt the 7200 is totally necessary given the 4200 *can* work. But if my error comes from the HD being 4200 maybe the 7200 is worth it. Assuming I get my new machine by Thursday I'm planning on recording a show that night. I'll let you know how it goes (as well as battery time for audio recording).

Hey guys..

I just uploaded a side pic for your measument pleasure, as well as a couple shots of the rear vents...including one close enough to see some components inside..

Once again, glad to help.

man this guy has convinced me to go for the new macbook pro. This guy is so dedicated to showing us how great the new mbp is. He deserves a big round of applause, or maybe even have his own little segment at MWSF '07 presenting the new improved macbook pro. All i have to say is thank you so much!

The marked angles are wrong in that image in any case (although pi/4, at 135°, looks right).

The arc length from pi/6 to pi/3 (= 2 pi/6) should be the same as from pi/3 to pi/2 (= 3 pi/6), but it is clearly not. Somebody did a bad job with a drawing program.

Well hmm, definitely want to change it to the 160 gb drive now. Wouldn't let me cancel since the APP was already shipped apparently. I hope they'll let me call and change it. Highly doubt the machine has been customized yet since the estimated ship date isn't until 11/14.

Yeah, if I had known the 120 wasn't using perpendicular recording and the 160 was I definitely would have gone with the 160... ahh well, I guess I'll deal :p

That's pretty funny -- I called and tried to change mine from the 160 to the 200, and they wouldn't let me.

no, calling wont work. You can still cancel a macbook pro order until they start building it. Something like it happened to me. I ordered a 2.33 mbp 15" on wednesday. It wasnt going to be shipped until tuesday (but it shipped today..hint of what's to come).

On friday i had the option of canceling for various reasons such as changed mind, buy elsewhere etc..i called the apple store and they said they probably would have some saturday. So long story short, i waited till saturday to cancel cause the apple store received a shipment. I went online and i could not cancel! I was pissed. i called them, and they said it was being prepped to ship..and it shipped "next" morning (shanghai time).

and applecare had been already registered prior to Friday, so applecare or not, it didnt affect cancellation.

they've probably allocated the parts to build your precious.

Stock 17" C2D MBP Looks Better Than Ever Now

Be firm. You can refuse it and you can call your credit card company to challenge it if they give you a hard time. By all means don't take NO for an answer. Courage.

Makes the stock 17" look better than ever. No fuss no muss. Gonna be a huge hit in the refurb store come January. :D

Apple claims it's 135 degrees but no one has confirmed it for sure yet. Is Apple fudging by 5 degrees or so?

it's 135, i'm using mine right now and i checked by holding a protractor up to it.

as for that picture, your geometry clearly isn't going to work because the picture is at an angle from the laptop, notice how you can see part of the screen?

regards,
mike
