Yeah, if I had known the 120 wasn't using perpendicular recording and the 160 was I definitely would have gone with the 160... ahh well, I guess I'll deal :p

Yeah I'm kinda pissed now that I know about it but its too late. I'm debating whether or not I should go ahead and just order a Seagate 160 GB drive. Anyone know if changing out the HD voids the Apple warranty?

Yeah it'll void your warranty.

Be firm. You can refuse it and you can call your credit card company to challenge it if they give you a hard time. By all means don't take NO for an answer. Courage.

Makes the stock 17" look better than ever. No fuss no muss. Gonna be a huge hit in the refurb store come January. :D

Yep, I will. My check card has a $1k daily limit on it anyways and it won't go through unless I call my bank and tell them to allow it. Sooo, I'll simply tell Apple I won't purchase it if they won't do this. They won't successfully charge me if they try since it'll be declined. Shipping is over 2 weeks away, I highly doubt it's been setup yet anyways.

But I don't think I'll have any problems doing so, and by the end of November I'll be peachy. :D

part numbers

Hi, I (too) made a purchase via ADC Student :)
I wanted to report another serial number (EDIT: part number).
Here are the existing ones:

15.4-inch: 2.16GHz - MA609LL
15.4-inch: 2.33GHz - MA610LL
17-inch: 2.33GHz - MA611LL/A

Here is mine: MA609ZP/A (15.4" 2.16C2D standard config).
Interesting that I have 1-2 weeks ship time for matte display and 4-6 days for glossy.
Too bad I want matte :)

hey, mine just shipped at 1 am shanghai time, does anyone know when i should be expecting it? (2day shipping). like sometimes its earlier/later.

the problem i have is people saying its "not portable" or that its "unusable outside of your own office" or that its "gigantic" because all of these opinions are untrue, and anyone who has seen the 15 and the 17 side by side (as i have) and used both a 15 and a 17 in day to day (as i have) and is not habitually hiking across the tundra (i am not) will know that the differences are marginal.

Speaking as someone who has trekked across deserts with U.S. marines with my 15" G4 powerbook on my back, I can definitely say a 17" would be too large for that. I miss my 12" G4 that I handed off to my mom a while back, but for now, the 15" is the sweetspot for me. Now, if only my 15" MBP C2D would be delivered! Has anyone noticed that the glossy screens are taking forever to get into people's hands. Wondering if I should go with the matte screen...

All that said, WoW would rock on a 17"... Ah, we all have to make sacrifices in life. :D

if you sit a 17" on top of a 15" there is very little difference in size

15-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 2.59 cm (1.0 inch)
Width: 35.7 cm (14.1 inches)
Depth: 24.3 cm (9.6 inches)

17-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 2.59 cm (1.0 inch)
Width: 39.2 cm (15.4 inches)
Depth: 26.5 cm (10.4 inches)

17" vs 15" = Width 1.3inches & Depth 0.8inches

With all the discussion over 15" vs. 17" I just thought I'd share my experiences of my 17" (HP) laptop. I bought it two years ago as something to replace my main computer and that I could also use in Uni. For the most part I think it was a good choice for me at the time and here's why:
1. I'm 6'3" and my lap is easily wide enough to have the laptop perched there on a train or a bus (although on a plane it can be an issue).
2. I can have two copies of word/Acrobat/excel/notepad/Firefox/IM/Putty/etc open side by side in a very readable font size so that I can write my essays or C++ programs with ease.
3. My glossy screen makes everything I see on screen to be clear and vibrant and not dull and lifeless like I see on matte screens. I do a fair bit of web design, photography and I love to watch DVD's on my laptop so it suits me. I only have issues with reflections when I'm outside on a bright sunny day but since I do a lot of my work in doors or in the garden (I live in Ireland which isn't renowned for sunny days!) it's not something that hinders my work.

Why am I sticking to a 17" for my MBP then?
1. It's a mac! I ran OSX on my laptop (sorry Apple!) and loved it so I said what would it be like with proper Apple hardware. I tried it on a friends Powerbook and was blown away by how simply everything just works (c).
2. The battery life of the new MBP's are bound to be better than 1 hour (I currently run a P4 3.4Ghz laptop!).
3. The weight of my current laptop and power supply (they always have to travel together) is 5.5 Kilos (12 pounds) where as the MBP is slightly over half that weight.
4. I've occasionally used smaller laptops over the years but I find myself hunched over the laptop because they're too small for me.
5. Noise! When I turn on my laptop in class everyone turns around and comments on my noisy and hot laptop (they nicknamed it the "George Foreman"). From what I can see the CD 17" MBP didn't suffer from too much noise or heat issues so I'm hoping that it won't affect the C2D's either.
6. I wanted a faster hard drive. My old laptop was 4200rpm and it caused it to freeze up slightly when doing file transfers and other stuff. The 160Gb drive I've ordered seems to outperform both the 100Gb and 200Gb.

There you have it...
These are MY reasons. Please don't attack me for stating them. We are all different and have different requirements.

Old Laptop: 17" Glossy, P4 HT 3.4Ghz, 1Gb, 100Gb 4200RPM, 4x DVD-DL
New MacBook Pro: 17" Glossy, C2D 2.33Ghz, 2Gb, 160Gb 5400rpm, 8x Superdrive

Please, please, please Apple don't make me wait until the 15th for my MBP to be delivered! :)
If any of you who ordered a 17" MBP find your delivery dates changing please post and let us know!

guys... i just can't stand it; this computer is so freaking fast. I upgraded from a g4 mac mini (the very first rev) with that really slow 4,200 RPM hard drive to this beastly 2.33 C2D macbook pro. like, honestly... i never used dashboard on my mac mini because it would take about 30 seconds (no, literally) to load up, and then another 10 seconds to actually click on something.

now it's just click and go.. on anything. click on photoshop, go; click on pages, go. I have honestly never been happier with a computer purchase.

my kudos go out to apple and their engineers.

if you sit a 17" on top of a 15" there is very little difference in size

15-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 2.59 cm (1.0 inch)
Width: 35.7 cm (14.1 inches)
Depth: 24.3 cm (9.6 inches)

17-inch MacBook Pro
Height: 2.59 cm (1.0 inch)
Width: 39.2 cm (15.4 inches)
Depth: 26.5 cm (10.4 inches)

Those numbers are a little deceiving. Look at what happens when you calculate the surface area of the top face:

15" MacBook Pro
35.7cm x 24.3cm (W x D) = 867.51cm2
17" MacBook Pro
39.2cm x 26.5cm (W x D) = 1038.8cm2

1038.8cm2 / 867.51cm2 = 119% or ~20% larger than the 15"

For people carrying their machines with them all day, i'd say that's not really "very little difference".

I would tend to agree with you however a good choice of backpack can alleviate a lot of the extra weight issues. I used a basic backpack at first for my laptop and it gave me such back pain that I needed to go to hospital but after splashing out on a proper backpack with padding etc I'm fine for doing my everyday commuting.

I cant wait for mine! Is it recommended to do a fresh re/install of OSX?

The only reason to do a fresh install would be if you REALLY need a few extra MBs. If you do a fresh install you can select not to install the languages you don't use and some printer drivers you don't need.

However, you're only going to save at most a few hundred MB, and I think it's much better to keep the exta printer drivers on a laptop. You have no idea the number of times I've found myself in a strange office and been thankful that I can connect to the local printer no problem due to keeping all the drivers on my machine.

Has it been confirmed (at least once) that the 160GB HDD is, in fact, a Seagate drive?

Even after reading through this ridiculously long thread, I can't remember anyone actually writing about this bit of information. Or did no 160 CTOs get delivered just yet?

BTW: I sold an almost new 17" PowerBook a year ago, and got me a 15" PB. The 17" is a very nice machine, but to me it does feel simply too large to be used in public transport, and too heavy to lug around every day.

Speaking of bag. I have the 15 inch brent haven bag from my old power book..

The bag is 4 years old. I treated it like ****.. and it still looks brand new. Great bag.. great zipper, protected my computer!!!

BUT ow I am going 17 inch... cause I am smart and strong.... and I am hoping for a bag that I can put a small 3 chip video camera into. The blogger looks like it may have the space?

Do you have any recomendations?

Ah, this has been my dilemma. My Brenthaven that I currently use is custom fitted for an old 15" PowerBook so its use with a 17" MacBook Pro is a complete no-no. Given this I've been looking for a suitable bag for some months and eventually whittled the competition down to a Pakuma Akara K3 or Booq Python XL, with a nod to the STM Large Loop and Oakley Kitchen Sink (now discontinued). My basic criteria was that I wanted a large backpack that could store the laptop plus associated gear (inc. books), that would offer really good protection and didn't look too much like it contained a highly expensive laptop. In the end I plumped for the Booq Python XL [system] that comes with a sleeve (oddly, their site only allows you to order 1 sleeve that will fit a 17" MacBook Pro with a bag designed for one with the others on offer for 12" and 15" systems) and a case that goes on the strap to hold an iPod/PDA/cell phone.

I'm expecting delivery in the next couple of weeks (damned if I was going to pay for FedEx shipment from Germany to Belgium) so I don't know yet how good/bad my decision was but the review for the bag are good.

Power cords

My MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.33GHz has just been delivered! One quick question, the power transformer is bigger than the one on my MacBook. I was hoping to leave one power cord at work and have one at home. Can anyone inform me if they are compatable?

country kit

Quick question....

My order is not shipped yet, and I don't see anywhere on my order the "country kit". Could I specify (maybe give a call?) a country kit different that the country that I am in?
Thanks.

bcavanau, would it be possible to post a picture your new 15-inch MBP C2D with the lid closed, head-on of the profile? I'm curious if the new MBPs have the lid-warping issues as before.

I'll get that posted this evening for you...

I did have a CoreDuo before this one, and it was definately warped, both front corners did not seat properly.

I'm not saying it has been fixed completely, as it may vary unit to unit, but my C2D one is a lot better. The left side has about a 1mm amount of play.

My old one has 2-3mm on each side...so better, yes, completely gone....probably not.

I didn't realize you guys were going to overlay my pic with measuments.

Whoever did that, good job...

I will update the picture later tonight to be as close as possible to "straight on" from the side. But I think 135' is about right...if you account for the slight offset from my pic...
