where do you live? I'm still in anchorage as of 12:49 PM. If you're on the east coast, it would make sense that i would ship at a different time because i live on the west.

Yep, New Hampshire. But I'm leaving for Vancouver on the 2nd. It will be most inconvenient if the MBP doesn't get here first.

I saw this on Macintouch:

Follow up on my mention that SMCFanControl didn't run on the Core 2 Duo MBPro - I emailed Heindrick Holtmann, the author of SMCFanControl, and he sent me a version to test yesterday. I can report that the new version (probably not generally available yet) runs on these new machines and seems to provide fan speed control as advertised.
Additionally, he passed on this information:
"Apple increased the minimum fan speed from 1000rpm to 2000rpm on the new macbooks, so they should run pretty cool even without smcFanContol."

Totally off topic -- you know, I've spent a lot more time here in the past couple of weeks than previously, and I must say I think it's rather ironic that the message board interface is so ugly and, well, Microsoftish. :( A Mac forum deserves better.

Windows

After lurking here for a long time, and now getting very antsy waiting for my C2D MBP to arrive, I'm interested to know how many people are putting windows on their MBP's (whether via bootcamp, parallels etc.). Or maybe i should ask, how many people are not putting windows on their MBP? As a mac user for a number of years now i've never found myself ever actually needing any windows programs, and though i appreciate at least having the option of running both OS's, i'm not sure there's any benefit for me to do so.

take courage, it might come a day early, which isnt uncommon. I think fed ex is just waiting for more shipments before they ship mine down south to cali.

Considering the expense of buying a Windows license, I definitely don't see a reason to install it using Parallels or BootCamp unless you do want or need to have Windows as well.

I plan on doing it (I own a Windows XP Home license which I'm not using, so I have it available), because I do want to use the MBP for some gaming and maybe some other Windows specific apps from time to time; but I would not plan on spending much time in Windows.

I think the nice thing though is that it's great as a Mac user to be able to buy a Mac laptop, rather than settling for a PC laptop if you do want or need to run some Windows stuff. In the previous generation I ended up buying a Sony Vaio because of a desire to run some Windows software, and it is great to be able to get everything I want and need in a single awesome laptop package.

Very true Zadillo. I hope they keep improving the options: i tried virtual PC on a macbook once and hated it. I really hope that the Darwine project, or similar, will come out someday and allow me to run Windows apps without the need for the OS.... one can only hope.

...
(I'm currently looking at getting an external 500GB with FW800 - if anybody has any ideas as for a good one at a good price - let me know. I'm looking at Maxtor right now - but I'm open to suggestions)

Having a faster HD in the MBP will allow for better OS and program speed.

That's just my take on it...

Cheers!

You might look at Costco. Seems like I've heard people here knock WD, but I bought a 500GB WD from Costco not too long ago for backup and I haven't had any trouble with it. I don't know off hand if it's Mac compatible or not, but I sure hope so...

Ha. The only thing that seperates my order from yours is your crappy screen.
:D

LOL - you have my sympathies .... too bad you erred and got matte ...

j/k - glad you've got yours already - can't wait for 11/2, to get mine. Sure hard to wait (even tho I've been waiting for this processor in MBP since January! )

:D

I believe the super_pi results given on the stats page for the C2D's is misleading: mine seems to be running it under rosetta, as shown here (I'm running the same super_pi that he did):

I don't know if the same goes for xbench, investigating......

i agree on that

It's all on my Post #1133. You should always by AppleCare for a mobile Mac. They are too fragile not to.

the last apple mac laptop that one could buy without worrying about applecare was that black powerbooks- aka lombard / pismo , they are indestructible!! but after that no way you should not get applecare, my alu powerbook, had motherboard changed 3 times, screen 4 times and few other things like inverter board ... :)

Fry's Has 400GB Seagate ATA/100 16MB Cache HDs On Sale Through Tomorrow For $100 Each

Personally, I always go for the fastest drive I can get (currently 5400rpm on 15" MBP)
Because you can always get an external drive to put on your other files on...
(External drives are usually at 7200rpm and have FW800 - having both you don't sacrifice performance)

Fry's Has 400GB Seagate ATA/100 16MB Cache HDs On Sale Through Tomorrow For $100 Each - limit 4 per checkout. They have 5 year warranty and are perfect fot FW/USB2 external boxes. 400GB is still the sweet spot @ 25¢/GB. 500GB drives are still a lot more money @ 35-40¢/GB.

Whoaaaa! Very cool!

Even better, my MBP is now in Indianapolis, much closer to NH than Anchorage is. And the FedEx tracking page hasn't updated with this info yet.

It's looking a lot more likely I will get it before the 2nd! :D

lol what the...my mbp is being shipped to CA, and its in indianapolis? something smells fishy.

according to fed ex its still at AK. what time are you guys arriving at IN? mine's at 2:16 am.

This is the only tracker that says IN.

Thank-you both, Watermonkey & Multimedia...
(Multimedia - 500GB was just an arbitrary number I came up with - seemed like a good amount - especially for doing professional video/cd recording and editing.)

I will look into both these possibilities...

-------------------------
WOW...that Seagate from Fry's IS a very good deal - might just pick me one up :)
EDIT: Maybe not - the Seagate only has FW400 - I'm after a FW800...
But if I can't find one suitable soon - I might just have to live with the FW400 :(

Cheers!

I ordered my 15"/2gb/2.33/160gb/glossy last night with my USC student discount and It's quoting me a delivery date of 11/14. Just thought I'd let those of you know who were wondering about student discounts/glossy screens slowing things down. I believe my combo is about as slow as you can get right now (discounting the 17" model of course).

...still it worked out pretty well, I got a printer with my order ($100 mail in rebate) and Apple gave me an extra $10 off the package deal for buying them at the same time. So basically, I got a $90 printer with a $100 mail in rebate :D. That plus my student discount plus 2% cash back on AMEX = :D :D

I feel like these next two weeks will be the longest of my life... even longer than the 1.5 years I've been relegated to using an iBook G3 600mhz while waiting out the intel transition... and then the C2D transition

Congratulations on all that patience. You did the right thing. Great config. I'm a USC Alum. :) I went to the Annenberg School and finished the first Spring of the Mac - 1984. USC is where I first laid my hands on an original 8MHz 128k RAM Macintosh in February 1984. It had a 400k floppy drive for mass storage inside it. The Mac's 9" screen was black and white. It only wieghed 16.5 pounds and sold for $2499. Those were the good old days. :p

Perfect configuration, giggity goo-ru! I did the same thing (my "free" printer gets here tomorrow!), and it's due to arrive 11/2!/ :D

I'm going nuts waiting for the next couple of days - I don't know how I'd survive for another 2 weeks!

Very interesting. So it turns out that the 200 is not PMR after all! Instead, to get the extra space, Fujitsu added a third platter, which also increased the height of the drive. So it will not fit in a standard 2.5 drive space.

The review summary is fairly negative:

Still, I'd like to see a performance comparison with the 200 appropriately partitioned as recommended on that other site I have the link to lying around somewhere. E.g., create a 120 GB partition, and compare performance within that partition to a 7200 rpm 120 GB drive. I wonder what the result would be.

Oh, bollocks. Despite my initial order being screwed up one of the primary reasons why I placed a new order was because I'd heard that the 200GB drive would perform really well due to its use of PMR. Given that this is not the case and that, at least for the moment, 160GB is sufficient space I think that I'll be changing my order AGAIN!

Given the hoo-ha with my order (UK laptop for delivery in Belgium) I think that I'll cancel my order with the online store completely, try to pick-up a stock 17" system from the Birmingham Bullring store on Monday, and if that fails use the money that I save from not buying the bigger hard drive for a EuroStar train ticket to London and buy one out of the Regent Street store during my week's vacation coming up.

I'm at the Annenberg School right now... I'm a Public Relations major. Lets hear it for the Trojan family (woot woot). I must say, I think my $2499 is getting slightly more than what you got back then ;)

this story might sound surreal but, i assure you it happened.

so i work a lot with electronics, and as such have a few small metal leads (like the end of a resistor) laying on my desk. with my new MBP closed i noticed that one of these small metal leads was magnetically attracted to my MBP; it had become stuck to it on the little space on the back to the side of the vent. Sure enough as i reached to pluck it off it got magnetically sucked up into the vent. *gasp* a metal lead /inside/ my computer! this surely cannot be good. I continued to use my MBP convinced that if anything bad happened i could surely use my apple warranty to fix it. soon enough I noticed that the little lead had made it's way inside my keyboard! i could tell because something was preventing me from pushing down all the ways on one of the keys and i could see a little bit of metal down there. As i tried to get the key off the lead vanished. Now, about two minutes ago, the same thing happened under the tab key, this time I was able to get the key off and remove the piece of metal with a pair of tweezers.

so, two important observations.

1) even aluminum can attracts magnetic things (at small charges)
2) things can go into your vents and do bad things
