I ordered my first mac ever yesterday. I used my ADC discount, do they verify your student status again before shipping? Also should i expect an order confirmation, because I did not recieve one or do they send when your they ship?

MBPro 2.16 Base Model

Estimated Shipped By: Nov 2, 2006
Estimated Delivered By: Nov 9, 2006

If you haven't done so yet, you need to fax ADC a copy of your student ID (or other proof, like a current schedule of classes). As far as I know they do verify this.

I got the same thing on FedEx tracking (my Apple e-mail notification says it shipped 10/30, and set to arrive 11/2). I've been speed-dialing the reload button in my browser, but nothing updated since this morning.... :(

Sheesh! I'm like a 6-year-old on Christmas Eve, waiting for Santa!!

:D

Me too! Call 800-455-4588 (FedEx Intl) and they can verify if yours is moving or not. The FedEx tracking can sometimes lag behind, and the rep will have the most current info. Sometimes individual scans will not happen, but they have what flight it will be on, and if the flight has left. According to FedEx, mine is en-route to Alaska, although my status says it is still in China.

Best of luck!

So, when trying to drain my battery faster to calibrate it (it just wouldn't die), I downloaded this fancontrol app from here and cranked up the fan speeds. After draining the battery, I removed it per their instructions, but the fan settings have remained the same! How can I restore the temperature/fan settings back to the apple default??? Please help!

You might email him or post on his forums to ask, but in the meantime can you just set it to run at the program defaults (1500 rpm base and 50C to 80C min/max)? I run it this way on my original MBP and its great.

I was asking earlier if this ran on the new C2D MBPs. Do the defaults appear to linearly control the fan speed based on temperature? Thanks.

Actually, AppleCare doesn't really cover things like accidental damage, environmental damage, etc. anyway. That isn't the reason to buy AppleCare.

The reason to buy AppleCare is to ensure you are protected from hardware failures, etc. beyond your control, because of potential faults with the system.

An anecdote like yours doesn't invalidate the reasons most people WOULD invest in AppleCare; and if someone wanted to, they could counter with plenty of anecdotes about people who did have hardware failures after the first year and had to pony up a lot more than the cost of AppleCare to get them repaired.

Yeah, and probably a lot more stories from people who bought AppleCare and never used it.

Hardware failures are a lot of the time the result of the environment and how you handle your hardware. His contention was that because it's a mobile computer and "fragile", one should automatically purchase AppleCare. You're saying that one should buy AppleCare with ANY Mac (using your logic).

Yes, they already verified me yesterday. But I was wondering if they verify before they ship. I think read somewhere that they do..not sure

True enough, but given that I live in a dorm room and run a webshop and have several websites (all of which can be whois'd to find out my name, phone number, and home address) I don't feel all that concerned with privacy... Not to mention my entire dorm wing knows I have a new MBP coming along with how much it cost... heh.. I should probablly get a lock and insurance shouldn't I... But uhh.. yeah, if you guys feel the need to prank call my cell phone, by all means, go ahead :p

Yea, man - I would insure it! A lot of people scam others in college. My wife (girlfriend at the time when I was in college) was a victim of a credit card scam. Someone got her CC bill from the mailroom, and bought some bran spankin new 486/DX2 x86 system :D I guess that shows you when I went to college...

All I can say, is that I would insure it. You can get renters insurance, very, very cheap. Highly worth it.

shipped!

I've read every page of this thread. I can finally post now.
My standard 2.33 (glossy) MBP finally shipped - - it was ordered on the evening of the 25th - My estimated ship date was the 31st - and it did ship on the 31st (today) - - but, instead of my previous delivery date of the 7th, it has changed to the 3rd.
sweet!

new mbp :)

Well.... here is my experience:

I ordered yesterday from the online local store with my ADC Discount and I had wait times of:
1-2 weeks for matte display
4-6 days for glossy display

I went for matte so that put me on about 13 nov shipping, 14 nov delivery.
Fortunately, I am pretty close to China :) or somthing :) because when I got home from school my order was shipped with tomorrow delivery.
I was just in the middle of somehow a Halloween mini-party with my face all painted :) (about 8pm) when the Apple Delivery knocked on my door :)
Needless to say I am now writing this on my new C2D MBP :) delivered in 26 hours after purchase :)

First things that I remarked:

- boy does that magsafe suck :) It just sucked the adapter out of my hands :)

- the notebook is pretty cool ... reasonably ... you cannot call it hot

- I got scared when the vents went full speed (I was importing some 600 pics from my camera...). It was like a plane taking off.... really scared me. Anybody else experienced something like that?

- the hottest part seems to be left speaker - anyone else, what do you say ?

- i can stay with it on my lap (in shorts) but after the vents went @ full speed I am thinking that maybe I was blocking the vents ... so now I use a hard book to be sure vents are open.

- making a comparison with some other laptops in my room:
my old thinkpad r40 - mbp is hotter and noisier
acer aspire dunno what version - mbp is cooler and quieter

The other happy mbp owners, did your vents went full speed ? and if yes, wes the sound like a plane taking off ? :)

I see. Well, again, all I'm talking about are hardware failures covered by AppleCare, not wear and tear or environmental stuff (which wouldn't be covered).

I agree, the fragility of the laptop in and of itself shouldn't make a difference. Even a very sturdy durable computer can benefit from having an extended warranty.

Yeah, and probably a lot more stories from people who bought AppleCare and never used it.

Isn't that the nature of insurance? The people who never use it pay for the people who do.

I'm not saying AppleCare is particularly good insurance, but you can't fault it for being what it is.

It doesnt appear to slow you down any, no worries :) My ADC order shipped a few days ahead of time.

Speaking of the ADC discount, I am eligible for the student ADC. How much is the discount? I've heard it is 20%. How much did it cost for people who bought it with their ADC discount? 20% on $2000 is 400, so you end up paying $1600 for the laptop. But then you add 100 to that for your ADC member ship, so it's $1700. If you buy AppleCare, it's $349, so it goes up to $2049. I think that's *slightly* cheaper than student discount. Did I do my math wrong here?

No, you're basically right, although note that you can buy the AppleCare later and use your regular educational discount.

The savings difference isn't really so huge.

In that case, I might just buy it at the Apple Store then. That way I can just pick it up and not have to wait for shipping :) Anyone know if the Apple Store only carries the default configurations? I am interested in getting the 2.16 Ghz with 2 gigs of ram and a 160GB hard drive.

I purchased the 2.33 15" C2D with my ADC discount and it dropped from $2499 to $1999. The $100 was definitely worth it, I'll get Leopard for free.

My MBP is 2 days away from me. :(

Just out of curiousity... What comes first:

  • Apple emails you to notify you the order has shipped?
  • Apple updates the status of your order on the webpage?
  • It actually ships?

(I coulda sworn last time I ordered from Apple, I got the notification from them after it had actually shipped and it was halfway here before I knew it!)

Are you sure about that? Apple makes a point to note that ADC Select student memberships do not include any software seeds, OS releases, etc.

Are you sure you're going to get Leopard for free when it comes out? I was pretty sure that only came with the full $500 ADC Select memberships.

would love to know the answer to this as well. ordered last week, still havent received a confirmation email from apple.

The defaults do appear to linearly control the fan speed. Thanks for the help. I hope the defaults for your comp are the same as mine, that's what I'm going to use for now.

Not Waiting Was More Trouble Than Waiting Would Have Been

Damn. I now have plenty of time to repent at leasure. I should have called them the week before last. Or last week.

I called them this week (21 days after delivery). Nope. Has to be repaired.

Great. So the 3 week old (refirbished) MBP has to go to an authorised service centre and it could take up to 10 days or more.

Arrgghhh. The reason I bought it in the first place was because I need a reliable machine. Now I'll have to go back to the PC and G4 (hence the nickname). Not to mention backing off all my data.

I think I'll just get it repaired and sling it on eBay.

Miffed of Sussex.
I sort of feel sorry for you. But on the other hand we all tried to tell anyone who came by here to WAIT. It's not like we can't say we told you so.

That new vent design makes anything before C2D a real stinker of a hot plate. I would definitely get rid of it ASAP and eat the price difference to have the new design because this one's a keeper - unless you really can make use of 4GB of RAM in which case next Spring's model will be the keeper. :p etc. etc. etc. :D
