Thank you

I hate to be one of those guys that tells you to go back and read a thread of almost 1500 posts, but this has been discussed quite a bit, and honestly is just going to boil down to personal use and preference. I use my Powerbook in small spaces: music venues, bars, sitting on top a folding stool at a festival to record concerts. So for my use, the 15" is the only viable option between those two. I prefer my 12" to be honest. My gut feeling is if you're a woman concerned that the 17" might be too big and uncomfortable from track pad to keyboard, it's also going to seem too big and uncomfortable on your lap, and lugging around. Again...this really is something only you can decide for yourself.

I've always said that if your high end electronic product is going to break/go bad, it's going to do so within 90 days. I've been right all but once when my Sony Receiver went out right after the warranty expired. I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 2.5 years now and never had one problem with it. I didn't get Applecare then, and considering I'm upgrading now it would've been a total waste if I had. If anyone here can convice me (and writerM) otherwise, I'd be glad to hear your opinion.

Thank you for helping me with this.

In that case, I might just buy it at the Apple Store then. That way I can just pick it up and not have to wait for shipping :) Anyone know if the Apple Store only carries the default configurations? I am interested in getting the 2.16 Ghz with 2 gigs of ram and a 160GB hard drive.

I just called the Apple store by me (Short Hills, NJ) - and they have the 15" 2.13/Matte in stock - they can do the RAM upgrade on-site, but not the hard drive - they are limited to the 'stock' configurations in the store.

The defaults do appear to linearly control the fan speed. Thanks for the help. I hope the defaults for your comp are the same as mine, that's what I'm going to use for now.

The default for the orig MBP is 1000rpm (as controlled by Apple) and the program ups that to 1500rpm. I believe I read the new C2D default is 2000 rpm so you might want to set your baseline for that to at least do what the system does by itself.

17" Service Manual Still Not Published Yet

have any images of the rear venting on the 17" C2D MBP surfaced yet? either from the service manual, etc..? no images on apple's site show that view or are current.
Just checked the Service Site and the 17" Service Manual is still not published yet. We either have to wait for someone here to receive theirs and post pics or someone here needs to go to an Apple Store where there is one on display and take pics for us there.

Hint Hint. :)

I'm thinking 6 a little wider flow ports. Anyone think 7 narrower?

So November 7 Is Shaping Up To Be The C2D MacBook/Mac mini Launch Date

So today is iPod Shuffle's Shipping - In Stores Friday Tuesday. Didn't make the cover. But hey - C2D MBP is too cool to pull for another week right?

Seems like the 8-Core Mac Pro will be announced/go on sale Tuesday November 14 the day after Intel announces Core 2 Quads are shipping.

So that leaves only next Tuesday November 7th as the C2D MacBook/Mac mini launch day since three weeks from today is Thanksgiving-Black Friday eve which will be too late to announce anything since Thanksgiving & Black Friday will be too much noise for the Apple PR machine to overcome.

Can I get an Amen? :)

Caveat: If it doesn't happen next Tuesday, it probably isn't going to happen until MacWord Expo. :( But it could happen as late as the following Tuesday November 14. :) That would be our Drop-Dead Date for it happening this year. Right?

Or does nobody care? :p :D

It's starting to feel like MacWorld Expo Eve to me. Anyone else get that feeling yet? Rumor Leopard might ship in two months has got me all jittery  and confused. :p

Who's Gonna Be The First 17 Incher Lucky Duck?

Well it's in the mainland now: Oct 30, 2006 11:36 PM Arrived at FedEx location INDIANAPOLIS, IN Skipped right past California (where I am) and went to IN.
They fan out from the Heartland. :) Yours was probably not the only one. I'm thinking about those perfect 17 inchers on their way to all the Apple Stores this week.

First to get their 17 incher's a lucky duck. :p

Newbies: You can put where you are in the "Location" field of your Control Panel and it will appear with your logon name. Helps us all have a geographical and more importantly time-zone reference.

woah... so the new C2D Macbooks ARE going to be released soon? I thought that it was said that they weren't coming out for a long, long time! Awesome! :D

Perhaps Not In November As Apple Waits For Intel To Lower Slower C2D Prices?

We can all say anything we like here that isn't rude or profane. Odds are the C2D MacBooks ship next week. But then I'm an optimist Apple wants to complete the C2D transition in November and not leave anything 32-bit CD by December.

When might hinge on Intel's first price drop on their lower speed C2D prices though. And I don't think we know when the first price drop is scheduled for yet do we? Or it might not as Apple may have special lower speed pricing already built into their contract with Intel.

I don't get it, why does Apple solder the CPU on to the mainboard? Why not let it be user upgradeable/removeable like the ram, hd etc? Pretty ridiculous design decision.

Many laptop makers solder the CPU onto the mainboard; generally speaking, upgradeable CPU's in laptops are generally still a rarity.

Yeah, I'm getting one of those beauts with the exact same specs. Mine shipped Monday (Nov. 1 was estimated). It should arrive tomorrow. Can't get any work done, too excited :p

I guess I've gotten used to Dell over the years. Just about everything in those laptops is upgradeable--same holds true for Alienware and Asus. No offense to Apple fans but this just seems like an underhanded way for Apple to make extra money off people. They force you to buy their higher margin and more expensive top end laptops to get the best CPU and if you decide to get a lower config then you're permanently stuck with it and never have the option of upgrading the CPU down the line when prices drop. That really makes me appreciate Dell and other computer makers that do allow CPU upgrades.

Yeah, definitely true of Dell and Alienware (or at least many of the things that Alienware rebrands).

I recall a few of Asus's thinner/lighter models that also do have soldered CPU's, but don't remember the model numbers.

It's definitely generally atypical though.

Soldered CPU Is A Brilliant Design Decision Not Rediculous !

Space.
Pretty ridiculous design decision.
Not rediculous at all - necessary. How do you think they can make a mobile Mac only 1 inch thin? Socket would force the whole thing to be significatly thicker. It's a brilliant design decision not "rediculous".

Was your service type anything other than: "IP Direct Distribution" on your tracking page? I was told by FedEx that once it is on the airplane, they all take about the same time (for this service type)

If you paid for expedited service, what was the service type on your FedEx tracking page?

I kind of think you got lucky, since this happened to me once with an iPod. I chose free shipping, but got it in about a day.

Enjoy the new machine - I can't wait.

I think this also explains why some of Asus's thin and light notebook designs also use soldered CPU's.
