Space. Not rediculous at all - necessary. How do you think they can make a mobile Mac only 1 inch thin? Socket would force the whole thing to be significatly thicker. It's a brilliant design decision not "rediculous".

I'm not sure I buy that explanation. I've opened up my M1710 and the socket isn't nearly tall enough to stop Apple from employing a similar design and still keeping their 1" thickness. The reason the Dells are thicker is because they use fairly large heatpipes and fans to cool their laptops.

Edit: While on that subject, speaking hypothetically, would someone with a Rev. A MBP be able to purchase a Rev. B MBP mainboard/CPU and put it in their system? If Apple kept their internal design consistent then at least that would be one way (albeit extreme) to upgrade.

Yeah, I'm getting one of those beauts with the exact same specs. Mine shipped Monday (Nov. 1 was estimated). It should arrive tomorrow. Can't get any work done, too excited :p

Hmm.. i've ordered the same (15"/2.33/160GB), except i put in 3GB of RAM. I ordered on the 30th, and it says it will ship on Nov 8, so i hope it ships sooner than that!

I mean it's all conjecture and opinion here not based on anything other than educated guesses experience and feelings. :)

Ah... I understand. Well, from what I've gathered by reading your previous posts and what-not, you seem to know what you're talking about. I'm going to take your word for it!

This is getting a little discouraging...
My new MBP has yet to leave US Customs...(according to apple)...
It's been there for 5 Days now (including the weekend).

It still has to travel north 1081 mi from California to where I am...
(yes my MBP is coming from Cali instead of China)

Oh well I guess... It'll be here eventually.
(I'm just growing in impatience)

Cheers!

Logic Board Is Not The Only Change Inside • Vents Are Radically Larger

Doubtful. There are many other small changes to the C2D model that make much more than the logic board need replacing. Many of the cables are different. Bluetooth is in a completely different place. Did you study the ifixit details yet?

But you'd definately need to upgrade the vent scheme to the new one for it to work.

I ordered my 15"/2gb/2.33/160gb/glossy last night with my USC student discount and It's quoting me a delivery date of 11/14. Just thought I'd let those of you know who were wondering about student discounts/glossy screens slowing things down. I believe my combo is about as slow as you can get right now (discounting the 17" model of course).

...still it worked out pretty well, I got a printer with my order ($100 mail in rebate) and Apple gave me an extra $10 off the package deal for buying them at the same time. So basically, I got a $90 printer with a $100 mail in rebate :D. That plus my student discount plus 2% cash back on AMEX = :D :D

I feel like these next two weeks will be the longest of my life... even longer than the 1.5 years I've been relegated to using an iBook G3 600mhz while waiting out the intel transition... and then the C2D transition

I ordered Saturday with the same delivery date. The next Jet must not be going out until the 6th. (ship on 6th, delivery on 14th) I think I'm gonna call and pay the $15 bucks for the 2-3 day shipping to avoid that extra weekend.

I just got my 15"/2.33ghz/2gb/160gb mbp, which was delivered to me this morning. I use macs for my multimedia classes at school, but this is the first one I've owned. I switched from a thinkpad t42 and I'm very happy. I connected an eyetv hybrid earlier and watched some hdtv on it :)

Actually, AppleCare doesn't really cover things like accidental damage, environmental damage, etc. anyway. That isn't the reason to buy AppleCare.

The reason to buy AppleCare is to ensure you are protected from hardware failures, etc. beyond your control, because of potential faults with the system.

An anecdote like yours doesn't invalidate the reasons most people WOULD invest in AppleCare; and if someone wanted to, they could counter with plenty of anecdotes about people who did have hardware failures after the first year and had to pony up a lot more than the cost of AppleCare to get them repaired.

Exactly. *IF* it covered accidents then it would be completely retarded to skip, but as a "manufacturer" warranty, it's a bit overpriced.

Awesome! Can you post some pictures?

How does the portability of your new MBP compare to your T42? I know the MBP is lighter but it is wider. My friend has a T42 and I have carried it, so I am wondering is the MBP easier to carry around?

They fan out from the Heartland. :) Yours was probably not the only one. I'm thinking about those perfect 17 inchers on their way to all the Apple Stores this week.

First to get their 17 incher's a lucky duck. :p

Yeah, mine is in IN too :/

I'm in CO.

Here's to hoping it makes ittomorrow :D (Est delivery is thursday though :/)

Got my MBP C2D yesterday morning, basic 2.16Ghz model. Ordered on the 24th, that night, free shipping. Left SHANGHAI CN on 27 and arrived on 30th. Was expected to arrive 11/3. Must of hit the express route compared to some other people.

Applecare

Yeah, and probably a lot more stories from people who bought AppleCare and never used it.

Hardware failures are a lot of the time the result of the environment and how you handle your hardware. His contention was that because it's a mobile computer and "fragile", one should automatically purchase AppleCare. You're saying that one should buy AppleCare with ANY Mac (using your logic).

I've been a dedicated Macuser since the 80s. Started buying Applecare with my first laptop, the clamshell, then with the iBook, and lastly with the rev A MBP. I can honestly say that in each case of the first two cases the Applecare has paid for itself two or three times over. Sure, it would be nice to assume I'll always get a machine that will stay healthy for 5+ years, but my experience has confirmed it to be a good investment. On the downside, in the past several months, when call wait times have been anywhere from 45 minutes to 2+ hours (yes, not kidding), I haven't been as pleased with the tech support itself, but no doubt in my mind the AC was a sound buy for the rev A MBP. Just my experience and opinion.

Am i the only one who has gone all out and maxed out the RAM?
I couldn't resist, since i know i will keep the thing for a long time (i am still on a PB G4 667).

Mine is a 17" 3GB 160GB Matte delivery estimate 11/9. I sure hope it arrives earlier, the loss in productivity is killing me.

I too ordered with 3gb Ram 160 gb hd and 2.33 ghz, ordered 3 of them on the morning of the 25th shipping has not changed from on or before Nov 3rd. All of the early arrivials have gotten my hopes up, but I think to no avail. What has your order/shipping interval been

after my twice-daily call to providence place, they have told me (yet again) that the 17" will be "shipping in November"

i am hoping to see it in store by friday.

i am even more hoping i am not pissing them off with phone calls and they did not wipe my name off the waiting list just out of spite.

Will MBP memory work in MBP2s?

1) Will the 1Gb so-dimm that works in a 2GHz MBP work in the new MBP? I.e. is the memory the same?

2) Video memory. In reality, is there any point to buying 256Mb over 128Mb? I run professional apps (DW/FW/Keynote/Parallels, etc) and maybe watch the odd DVD. I'd like the possibility of running a 30" display, but in reality will be using a 24" external monitor.

Is it hype? What does the extra memory do?

I ordered monday, and shipping should be by Nov 8. Everyone's early ship/arrivals give me some hope.

well you also get the 2.33 ghz processor, which on new egg is about 200 bucks more, and you get another gig of ram which cost 140 to upgrade so that leaves about 160 bucks for double the video ram.....is it worth it? eh at that point maybe.....I went with the 2.16, I couldn't afford any more and it wasn't worth it, and with the applications that you stated, you you wouldn't see a difference.
