I saw this on Macintouch:

Follow up on my mention that SMCFanControl didn't run on the Core 2 Duo MBPro - I emailed Heindrick Holtmann, the author of SMCFanControl, and he sent me a version to test yesterday. I can report that the new version (probably not generally available yet) runs on these new machines and seems to provide fan speed control as advertised.
Additionally, he passed on this information:
"Apple increased the minimum fan speed from 1000rpm to 2000rpm on the new macbooks, so they should run pretty cool even without smcFanContol."

This may have almost as much to contribute to the reports about the new C2D MBPs being cool as the redesigned vents.

so, two important observations.

1) even aluminum can attracts magnetic things (at small charges)
2) things can go into your vents and do bad things

-mike

1. Aluminium is not magnetic. Iron, cobalt and nickel are magnetic. Your little bit of metal was probably sucked in by either a reasonably strong magnet inside the MBP (speakers maybe?) or sucked into the inflow vent.

2. Yep.

Perfect configuration, giggity goo-ru! I did the same thing (my "free" printer gets here tomorrow!), and it's due to arrive 11/2!/ :D

I'm going nuts waiting for the next couple of days - I don't know how I'd survive for another 2 weeks!

iBorg

mmmm.... Indeed... It is the BEST possible configuration (IMHO of course). Having owned a 12" pb and a 17" pb and not really being happy with either because they were too small and too big respectively, I am quite excited to finally get the perfect size. I'm also WAY stoked on the glossy screen and the 160 PMR hard drive. Thanks to everyone up here for revealing that... I would never have known. I think that's an essential upgrade for anyone who can fork out the extra $100/$90ed. The performance increase is well worth it.

btw... iBorg... what printer did you get? I got the all-in-one HP with the scanner and stuff. I basically figured it would be nicer to have a scanner as well as 1200x2400dpi printing rather than just having exceptional photo quality (the canon printer).

Oh, bollocks. Despite my initial order being screwed up one of the primary reasons why I placed a new order was because I'd heard that the 200GB drive would perform really well due to its use of PMR. Given that this is not the case and that, at least for the moment, 160GB is sufficient space I think that I'll be changing my order AGAIN!

Given the hoo-ha with my order (UK laptop for delivery in Belgium) I think that I'll cancel my order with the online store completely, try to pick-up a stock 17" system from the Birmingham Bullring store on Monday, and if that fails use the money that I save from not buying the bigger hard drive for a EuroStar train ticket to London and buy one out of the Regent Street store during my week's vacation coming up.

Ooo, a good twist to my story (anyone bored by this yet?). Following my daily call to Apple prior to which I was expecting to cancel my order, it looks like I might actually get what I want and sooner than expected. The problems with my initial orders seems to be due to the CTO (Customised To Order?) specification and apparently Apple can't provide a CTO localised to one location for delivery in another. However, if I am prepared to accept a standard BTO (I have no idea what BTO stands for) then they can send me a UK specification system in Belgium. Given that I now just want the standard system then this is absolutely perfect.

Fingers crossed this will mean that I might get a delivery next week again and everything will be cool.

Very interesting. So it turns out that the 200 is not PMR after all! Instead, to get the extra space, Fujitsu added a third platter, which also increased the height of the drive. So it will not fit in a standard 2.5 drive space.

Because it is not standard size, I very much doubt the apple unit is Fujitsu.

You are supposed to be on the phone about that kind of stuff as soon as it starts. You have 14 days to return with restocking fee of 10%. You should have waited. The C2D has a radically different venting system that lets all the hot air out all the time. If I were you, I would have been calling a supervisor last Tuesday morning. What have you been doing for a week?!?!?

Damn. I now have plenty of time to repent at leasure. I should have called them the week before last. Or last week.

I called them this week (21 days after delivery). Nope. Has to be repaired.

Great. So the 3 week old (refirbished) MBP has to go to an authorised service centre and it could take up to 10 days or more.

Arrgghhh. The reason I bought it in the first place was because I need a reliable machine. Now I'll have to go back to the PC and G4 (hence the nickname). Not to mention backing off all my data.

I think I'll just get it repaired and sling it on eBay.

Miffed of Sussex.

Why not try buying one from Dixons duty free? They'll give you the VAT back. And, if you're travelling in the EU, they'll give you a VAT receipt for the rest! E.g. if it was £1000+VAT = £1175, they'll flog it to you for £1000 and give you a VAT receipt for the £1000, then you can claim the VAT back from Gordon (the Chancellor) and get a machine for £851. Nice. There's also a Dixons in the Eurotunnel mall.

But.... I tried to buy one about a month ago and they had *none* in stock. That's *no* Macs of any description.

Edit: http://www.dixonstaxfree.co.uk/

Edit2: Oh, and it goes without saying that you can only claim the VAT back if you're VAT registered.

No, Toshiba also has one. Still 4200 RPM, but it's only 9.5mm thick thanks to PMR.

Oh! That would make a lot more sense.

Uh, Kelmon... I hate to break it to you... ready to change your order again?

From the link:

At a slim 9mm thin, it will fit nicely into today's super-thin notebook form factors, but its 4200RPM spinnage won't be tremendously popular with video editors. For the rest of us, its 200GB will be plenty of space to take lots of porn on the road.

:p

Well, I don't know what to make of this. In Good News the online order seems to be showing a correct configuration with a BTO GBR 17" MacBook Pro. In Bad News the suggestion of an earlier delivery appears to be incorrect (either that or the estimations are total garbage) as Shipping is expected to occur on the 14th November with Delivery not expected until the 27th November. The 27th? What are the shipping it on, a rowing boat from China? Good grief...

I've given up on this now that I've received explicit confirmation that the only way that I'll get a UK specification laptop in Belgium is if I buy the standard model. If the 200GB drive is fine then maybe I can upgrade to it later, although I expect that to be fun 'n' games as well.

As it stands I'm happy with my order. I'll be back in the UK on Monday so if the Apple Store in Birmingham has got a stock 17" machine then I'll buy one from there and cancel the online order but, if not, then I'll wait for the delivery. I'm just wondering now when the order will actually be shipped/delivered as the current dates just seem wrong. Almost 2-weeks for "express" delivery? I don't think so.

Nice idea but as you note, only available when you find the right Dixons store. Plus I'm not VAT registered...

Redirecting my C2D from FedEx

Just thought I'd let everyone know. My C2D is scheduled to arrive on 11/1, I called FedEx to ask that they hold it at their shipping center. They advised me, as others have said, that they must attempt 1 delivery first, then I can call and have them hold the package. I live in the SF Bay Area.

Vents

where did you get yours online or local apple store, what exactly does the new back(vent holes) look like?

I ordered mine from Apple about 20 mins after they came out.

The new vent holes are basically quite a nice design, they don't detract from the clean lines of the notebook.

Still running very very cool. Never used a REV A MBP, but I think they really fixed their issues.

Thanks
Neuroguy

I got the same response from the FedEx rep, however, they said that my package was going 'out for delivery' today! =)

I was in that recent shipment to Alaska, to here in ChiTown.

Toshiba 200GB/4200rpm HDD

Hi, I received my new MBP (2.33/2G/200GB/matte) this morning.
It was a bit cold since it came via AK :p

Anyway, as some of you already guess, system profiler says my 200gig disk is "TOSHIBA MK2035GSS," which is PMR.
I'm not sure if Apple also uses Fujutsu's 200gig disks.

Anyway, here is the result of XBench, with comparison to MBP-2.33/2G/120G
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=199097&doc2=198214

Not that bad as I was worried. Actually very good instead!
If Apple uses two different 200G disks, then I'm lucky :)

It's all on my Post #1133. You should always by AppleCare for a mobile Mac. They are too fragile not to.

I disagree. I bought my TiBook in 1999 and it traveled around the world with me (literally) over the course of 2 years - much of this time spent in third world countries where dust/sand/etc. plentiful. Never had a single problem. Invest that money in a good case and don't do dumb things around your laptop. End of story.

ETA - the laptop worked fine until 2 months ago when the monitor finally crapped out. ~7 years with no problems. AppleCare would have been a complete waste of money.

New MBP help!

So, when trying to drain my battery faster to calibrate it (it just wouldn't die), I downloaded this fancontrol app from here and cranked up the fan speeds. After draining the battery, I removed it per their instructions, but the fan settings have remained the same! How can I restore the temperature/fan settings back to the apple default??? Please help!

Actually, AppleCare doesn't really cover things like accidental damage, environmental damage, etc. anyway. That isn't the reason to buy AppleCare.

The reason to buy AppleCare is to ensure you are protected from hardware failures, etc. beyond your control, because of potential faults with the system.

An anecdote like yours doesn't invalidate the reasons most people WOULD invest in AppleCare; and if someone wanted to, they could counter with plenty of anecdotes about people who did have hardware failures after the first year and had to pony up a lot more than the cost of AppleCare to get them repaired.

I ordered my first mac ever yesterday. I used my ADC discount. Do they verify your student status again before shipping? Also should i expect an order confirmation, because I did not recieve one or do they send when they ship?
