Thanks for the info

I just forgot to mention that I am in Canada, so no Fry's. But waiting for Black Friday is a good idea.

Black Friday is only 3 weeks from tomorrow. Just wait 'til Black Friday November 24 and get a bargain deal at Fry's. I bought four 400GB PATAs last weekend for $100 each. Then you buy - I have - an external FW case from Acomdata for $40 after rebate and you're good to go with 372GB (net) of backup space for only $140.

My Black Friday Trigger Pull List:

Seagate 500 SATA/300 or PATA/100 $125-$130 each
Seagate 750 SATA/300 or PATA/100 $200-$225 each

No but Apple does do 10% off on everything at the Apple Stores then.

Do they do this on every item (including laptops)?

Call AppleCare and arrange for a repair. Should not be making any sound like that.Call AppleCare and arrange for a repair. Should not be making any sound like that.

thanks I will!

but then there should not be any kind of sound whatsoever with this laptops? None at all?

Overall my laptop has been doing fine. no heat, the dvd drive is fine, to sounds at all, except for this sound that's not loud at all, but that does get on my nerves.

thanks again multimedia.

I will go tomorrow to Macstation here in vancouver where I got this computer.
I found this on the apple site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303365 so if somone else has a laptop that's emitting a high-pitched buzzing sound, call applecare.

One more thing, i just came from having a horrible experience with Toshiba (8 repairs) and my laptop never worked. So I came to apple hoping to get a better product and well looks like the first repair is on its way within 1 day.
Should i be able to get a brand new compter again? can I ask for it? or am I gonna have to stick with this laptop that will be fixed?

If Fujitsu LMR Request A Replacement From Store If Hitachi PMR Do AppleCare Repair

thanks again multimedia.

I will go tomorrow to Macstation here in vancouver where I got this computer.
I found this on the apple site:

MacBook Pro with noise under the keyboard
"If your 15-inch MacBook Pro emits a high-pitched buzzing sound, please contact AppleCare for service."

so if somone else has a laptop that's emitting a high-pitched buzzing sound, call applecare.
Looks like Apple already knows they and/or one of their suppliers made an engineering/assembly mistake and admit to it readily.

Personally I would request a replacement from the store. Too new to deserve a repair. No telling what other mistakes they made to it.

BUT:

What HD did you get? If you got a Hitachi 120, 160 or Toshiba 200 PMR then I would go for an AppleCare repair as you have the newer HD tech that might not be in a replacement unit. If you got a Fujitsu 120 LMR definitely fight for a replacement unit and pray the next one will have Hitachi inside.

Well I got the 2.16 macbook pro core 2 duo with no upgrades. just as it is. I got it a store called Macstation here in vancouver canada, so I didn't really contact Apple directly.
For what i can see it came with the fujitsu MHW2120BH 120GB

So please, you guys that are more knowledgable about Apple, give some advice. I've been dealing with windows based pcs for a long time and I know they are a pain in the butt and that they will do everything in their power to avoid talking to the customer and give a replacement.
I've heard many good things about Apple from apple "fans" or long time users and always say that apple tends to accept to give replacements more easily than other manufacturers. In my case i don't whom I should be dealing with. Should I ask the store for a replcement or should I call apple and ask them directly to replace it.

Please help a brotha out!

Both. Start at the store with the Manger not a sales person. If he refuses ask owner. If he refuses, tell him you are going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

If all else fails, ask Apple. But with a Fujitsu, you definitely want a replacement not a repair. At least you get another shot at a PMR drive. Silver Lining in your dark clowd.

The airline adapter DOES NOT work in cars - i just got one today and it is expressly stated in the manual. :(

Ugh, i just saw this post, pulled out my magsafe airline adapter and am seeing the same thing.....

Why on earth didnt I think of that before I bought it, just assumed as it LOOKS like a car charger that it would work...

Just out of curiousity, has anyone actually TRIED to plug it in to a car cigarette lighter to see if it does work?

Quiet and powerful MBP

Finally got my C2D MacBook Pro. It was supposed to arrive on Tuesday but for some reason Fedex couldn't explain, it ended spending two days sitting in Calgary before making its way to Vancouver.

I ordered 15" with a 160GB hard drive. It is a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00, which uses perpendicular magnetic recording. It is remarkably quiet.

I've put some photos up of the MBP on Flickr. Spent the rest of the day migrating my stuff from a backup as my old 12" Powerbook died two days again. Hard drive is fried :(

Thanks Multimedia for all the help.

One last thing, what's the big deal with the hard drives? I've read some posts of people prefering certain hard drives instead of one hard drive which I assume is the fujitsu since you are telling me there's other better ones.
Any links to other threads or whatever would help.

thanks again.

Multimedia, you mentioned that Apple runs a 10% off everything in the Apple Store on Black Friday. Is that just for retail customers or can students also get 10% off the education prices?

Man, I'm sitting here importing CDs (192 AAC) on my MBP C2D 2.16ghz and I can't believe how FAST it's going.
I'm using an external firewire CD drive, so the read speeds are much higher, and the MBP is encoding at up to 36X speeds.
I saw my imac G5 hit 25X at the absolute most.
I put a disc in, switch over to Safari, and before I even check out a site, it's done!

Perpendicular Drives May Be More Reliable And Faster

the Fujitsu MHV2120BH 120 is Linear 50 Year Old Technology coming to an END in 2008.

Hitachi Ships Millionth Perpendicular Recording Hard Drive, 4 Million Expected by Year End
Wed 01 Nov, 2006
:

"Hitachi began manufacturing PMR-based products in May of this year when the company debuted the Travelstar 5K160 -- the most reliable and technically-advanced 2.5-inch hard drive on the market. That reliability claim has borne out as Hitachi achieved high volume more quickly than with any other 2.5-inch product to date -- a considerable achievement given PMR is a relatively nascent technology when compared to existing longitudinal magnetic recording technology, which has been in use in hard drives for half a century. PMR production will represent roughly 35 percent of Hitachi's fourth quarter 2.5-inch hard drive output. Hitachi expects to fully transition its 2.5-inch product line to PMR by the end of 2007."

Got my mac book pro on tuesday, had to RUN to regent street from work because they wouldn't reserve one for me and they had just got them in.

Got the C2D 2.33. And it's actually really good. It's was really slow yesterday but I think this only happens when I plug in my monitor and put it at the highest res and run paralells on it.

Once I setup smack book and desktop manager it runs alot faster. A bit wierd really not sure what's going on there, has any one else experienced this?

No but Apple does do 10% off on everything at the Apple Stores then.

Good call. I was about to grab some more storage from Fry's after reading about your grab, but I forgot about the impending Holiday sales. Black friday it is, unless they do another weekend sale on 16mb/7200 ATA/100 drives. . . and now Apple.com/store being 10% off, heck if it carries over to the edu store ( I will check) I might be grabbing a new MBP sooner than later.

Although I will admit, I'm kinda attatched to this powerbook. Oddly. ALthough I guess thats not uncommon for me. Check my nick here. I miss that poewrbook too. :D

Woot Woot Woot!

So on a hunch, based on someone who posted a similar experience a few pages back (!), I've occasionally been going to the "Cancel Items" page on my order details.

As of 2343 PST on 11/2, I can no longer cancel my 17" MBP! I hope that means it's shipping in the next day or so!

Monday or Tuesday could be a very good day!

I hope this means the flood of 17" C2DMBP's is about to be unleashed!

*fingers crossed*

Yes they have there was either a Mac Byte or a Thread about this. It sounds like yes, it does work in cars, but only newer versions and that is at best just wishful thinkiing. Pluse if anything goes wrong it kinds seems like its on you:eek:. I think the car tested was a Honda/Acura of some sort, however, no other car was tested...

I'm thinking about getting a refund for mine... No reason it having mine if it can't be used in cars. I thought it'd be nice for my flights back to Texas, but I keep hearing that the DC ports are usually only in the business class...:( :( :(
