Are you sure your capacitor has been well soldered, good solder?

I have questions about my soldering (sn60pb40) ... but I don't want to do it all over again. How can a solder make so much diference when well soldered?
An high sierra problem when clean installed?

I did do a fabrication/soldering course in college. We learned to solder properly and built digital multi-meters from these kits. I'm not saying I'm an expert but this wasn't my first rodeo. It doesn't look pretty, but aside from this extremely slight blink when switching to the nvidia gpu it's running perfectly. I haven't actually noticed it in quite some time but that may be because I use chrome and it's always just using the Nvidia GPU and not switching. I used braided copper to clean the pads. I used rosin core solder, no flux. I thoroughly cleaned the solder and board area around the cap with alcohol after. Once I'm home I'll see if I can get it to blink. I wonder if I could capture it on video...

Update: Testing it out, after a reboot sometimes it happens... sometimes it doesn't. I couldn't get it to flicker when I got home, had to reboot first. I should probably note I have the upgraded high def display. Cinebench runs and finishes with a fps of 15.59

Does anyone know where I can have the capacitor replaced in the UK (preferably Yorkshire area) my electronics skills are somewhat lacking. This problem has been frustrating me for about 2 years, gfxcard status didn't help, I'm going to try the patch for now and see how I get on.

I don't do anything to intensive on the laptop these days as it's just my machine for watching netflix on whilst I'm working on the the imac but I'd love to keep it running for a while longer.

Thanks
Scott

Me too Skotbites. There's a shop out Horsforth way that said they would do it, but I'm hesitating to let them do it.

If you find someone or somewhere please let me know!

The screen flickers is due to High Sierra.

I wanted to try the Apple Hardware Test, so I downgraded to Yosemite (clean install) -> Snow Leopard (clean install, to try the hardware test, but didn't work) -> El Capitan (upgrade).
I feel El Capitan worse than Yosemite that I used two years.

In Yosemite, Snow Leopard or El capitan the screen never flickers. Maybe it's the way the High Sierra changes the graphics.

Another Yorkshire man, i like it, if you’re anywhere near the sheffield area I’d check out the pc hardware shop on eccesall road, I forget the name but it’s bright red so you can’t miss it, just one junction down from the Starbucks I believe.

Before getting the capacitor changed however I’d strongly advise checking out the fix listed on page one, if you use the installer it’s fairly straightforward and should sort your issue for good really.

Only way to fix Mac Book Pro 15 Mid 2010 by software is older

gfxCardStatus1.8.1(download site: https://software.com/mac/apps/gfxcardstatus/1.8.1 or whenever you find it)
don't try newer versions !!!! it will no work. Then install gfxCardStatus1.8.1. in menu check mark: Intel Only. in preferences, check mark:Load gfx.. at startup. and. Restore last used mode at startup
It will never shutdown but it will never use nvidia graphic card

This is the ONLY solution that worked for me! Yay. Laptop has been saved.

Updated download link here: https://github.com/codykrieger/gfx.io/raw/gh-pages/downloads/gfxCardStatus-1.8.1.zip

If your 2009 - 2011 Macbook Pro is experiencing any of the following issues, they are symptoms of a faulty capacitor.
Kernel Panics Related to Graphics Card
* Severe Stability Issues
* Frequent Black Screens
* Panic Shutdown Screens
* Restart For No Reason
* Multiple Restarts Since Upgrading to Yosemite

Did the $95.00 include disassembly of your laptop?

Thanks for your reply, I am aware that the issue is with the capacitor however the commenter I replied to said he only really wanted to use his laptop for Netflix and browsing therefore I feel that the regulated voltage fix via the kext should help him out, but yes you are correct.

I wanted to ask that a security update "2017-0001 10.12.6" is available. Will i have to again fix the gpu issue after updating ?

I think I have a similar issue with my mid 2010 MBP? Lot's of irregular crashing etc. Hadn't read this thread until now so went out and upgraded the HDD to SSD yesterday and all was working well until this morning and crashes started again!

Would somebody please check my report to let me know of the ideal and easy fix?

3 - Open Extensions folder (System/Library/Extensions), copy AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext to desktop (or other folder), open the info.plist into editor (I used the PlistEdit Pro.app), and change the values like writing up.

Hi all, I've recently inherited a MacBook Pro (6,2) which is suffering from this problem. I'm currently on 10.8.5 and trying to implement the kext workaround. There is no kext file available for 10.8.5 so I'm trying the manual method. I'm a total mac newbie so I'm stumbling a bit. I can't seem to find an info.plist file in the system/library/extensions folder. I did find one somewhere else but when I open it (Pref Setter screenshot below, but I also tried Plist Edit Pro) I don't see anything like the values that fabioroberto says to change. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
[doublepost=1510280510][/doublepost]I figured it out. I had to control-click the kext copy, then show package contents. So, I found the info.plist inside the kext and am editing that in Plist Edit Pro. I'll see how this works out...

I ended up upgrading to 10.13.1 today and needed to re-apply the fix. The kext didn't look quite the same as the older os one, so I couldn't figure out how to edit it manually. So, I opted for Julian's tool and it worked nicely.

Also, we reach 7k downloads of the app, I'm so happy it helps people ! :). (But so far not a single one donation :().

fixed that ;)

I had this same problem since back in 2011 and was able to get my logic board (and battery) completely replaced outside of the replacement program's eligibility period—literally two weeks ago.

My best advice is to call Apple and ask to speak with Customer Relations. Be courteous but persistent and you might be able to convince them to replace your logic board. Call them first and describe the issue. Mention that the discrete graphics chip is something you paid for and you just want the machine to work the way it was intended to work.

They may ask you to head to a Genius Bar to confirm that your machine would have been eligible for logic board replacement which I highly recommend you do, but make sure your Customer Relations rep will be available by phone during your Genius Bar appointment. You will want to ensure that the Genius runs a VST (Video Switching Test) to confirm the defect.

When I did this there were some other complications with my machine, but the Genius offered me Apple's flat rate repair option, which I believe is $310. That would basically involve sending it to the repair depot and they will fix any non-accidental issues they find, even if they're related to wear and tear (e.g., logic board, keyboard issues, battery, etc.).

I brought my machine in some time in 2012 about a battery malfunction and had mentioned the kernel panic issue back then, but the Genius never did anything about it. Luckily he noted it down so there was a record of the problem, which may have been my saving grace. Armed with that I actually managed to negotiate the flat rate repair directly with the store manager and he agreed to give me $150 off. I was about to send it off when my Customer Relations rep called me back. I told her what happened and she asked to speak with the Genius that was assisting me. When he gave me back the phone he just said, "Dude you're lucky, she's going to cover the repair." I ended up sending it out myself the next day (a Friday) in a box they overnighted to me and I received it back on a Wednesday. As I said, they replaced the logic board and the battery!

In the meantime you might try running the Cinebench diagnostic. I've heard that it should crash your machine if it is indeed one of those affected. I also definitely ran it when I received my repaired machine and it did not crash it!

Best of luck!
When I try to go to apple discussions thread above: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5311933 Safari says it cannot open the page. I have always used apple discussions but have had the same problem getting to their site almost like Apple has made it impossible to go to. What am I doing wrong.
I have appointment at genius bar at recommendation of Apple Care after four long support calls for my 2010 MBP : recommendation by senior tech who worked with me to fix Mail issues. Took long time as OS X Sierra didn't recognize my MBP even though i had all these calls for tech support using its serial number.

Anyway, is there a chance I may get my computer diagnosed without paying the fee 300 dollars flat under the program related to this issue. He said as I lived in CA the not covered clause by apple anymore doesn't apply. I am seriously looking into buying another MBP and see that Apple has lost its reputation as flagship laptop for video editing due to the redesign problems taking away the ports, problems with the large trackpad and folks not liking the smaller top of keyboard (Can't think of what the row of helpers to programs is called. Makes me wonder: should I consider buying the refurbished 2015 MBP with all the inputs I currently have - or bite bullet and upgrade to a 2017 model. Would like 15 in 16 gb RAM and 256 SSD they show on refurbished this week. Anyone who can help me decide or know whether it is futile to take MBP to Apple store and just get charged or "fixed" but not "fixed". Please advise.

I have no one else to ask. I use Photoshop and LR for editing and use two monitors and enjoy mirroring my screen to big screen tv. Review of 2016 premature issue and concerns about current models have me unable to choose which MBP to buy as replacement. Love all my Apple products. Imac early 2011, IpadAir2, iPhone, Miniipads,

I would need to know what hub or system to use to plug my MBP into. The choices are confusing. I have a second monitor which I could use to set up a desktop system or buy the monitors with the inputs I need. I hate to think of dongle confusion. I appreciate any help. Found this forum late in my dilemma.

Will keep acquainting myself. I saved some posts by forwarding to myself in email so i can try to explain why Apple should test my MBP. Will i get any trade in if i upgrade? Thanks to all who contribute to this forum.

Rheta San Diego Need good monitor for small print reading as have macular degeneration. Been learning guitar with YouTube lessons and paid lessons so need my MBP to mirror to TV. I can see the chord charts and save things to iBook. Everything works so well with Apple. I ran disc utility check and after the email problem fixed the " corruption was finally fixed. " Still crashes with any random movement or keystroke. But ran for 10 hours running a full new Time Machine backup. Heats up a lot though.

Found this sign in the Houston Zoo today and made me think about defective capacitors.

So, don't really know if this fits here but I just installed a supplemental mac os update. First thing I noticed is that youtube videos had little "skips" in them... like it would drop frames or whatever (not sure if this is exactly the right terminology I'm using here). Then I look up at my gfxcardstatus and I notice that it's using the integrated gpu rather than the discrete. This is weird because usually just opening chrome make it switch to the discrete gpu. Not sure if this due to the supplemental update or if chrome updated in the background at some point. Anyone else noticing this?

Hi everybody,

first off, many many thanks to Fabio for the patched kext!
I own the infamous MPB 2010, installed it and system looks stable now, I also removed GFX Card Status.
The only kernel panic I get is while doing the Cinebench test connected thru an external monitor (tv in my case).
Without it, Cinebench test works, although it shows a green-dots-shape just for 2 seconds.
Is this regular or should have no artifacts? Need I the hardware fix?

Thanks in advance!

This is not a graphic artifact, it is part of the CineBench test, do not worry about that.

If you have installed the kext patch, not being able to use an external monitor is normal.

If you need to use an external monitor you will need to replace the capacitor, then restore the original kext.

Hah, it's been great so far... haven't run cinebench in a while or the apple hardware test because honestly I'm really hoping I don't end up with issues... but I'll give them a go and let you know.

UPDATE: Gave it a try... Cinebench completed with 15.78, the apple hardware test for Internal and External Video finished all the video tests with a pass. :) So, all I can say is that it's working for me and it's already worked longer than the ceramic capacitors. So, from personal experience I'd recommend scraping the board and using the aluminum type capacitor.
[doublepost=1512322596][/doublepost]Hi Stewy,

It's interesting. I also have a mid-2010 15 inch macbook pro and got the GPU kernel panics. I changed the capacitor 2 days ago (I used a 2.5V MURATA ceramic 330uF) and, since then, all is working correctly but ... I have the impression (maybe/probably completely wrong) that my GPU is running slower since the capacitor change. As I have not (was no more possible because of the Kernel panics ...) made benchmark before the capacitor change, I have no way to know if my GPU is running at correct speed. The Apple ASD suite (GPU + Internal) is running OK but I was really surprised to see that the tests of the GPU (they seem to be the same as for the internal ... at least they have the same names) took much more time (6' 27") that on the internal Intel chip (2' 50''). My questions:
- Do you observed the same behavior with the ASD ?
- Do you have any number from a GPU benchmark on a mid 2010 15'' macbook pro (if yes, please indicate where I can download this particular test to compare with your numbers)

Any answer ... also from other members really WELCOME
Thank you all in advance (and please excuse an english faults ...)
Gilles (France)

UPDATE:
OH, sorry, I did not saw you mentioned Cinebench just above ... Ooops. So, I downloaded it and gave it a try. I got alomost the same score as you (15.59 fps). So, it seems I have the same performance as your machine.

However, I would be interested to know if you get also the same bahavior with Apple ASD (GPU taking much more time than internal to perform ... seemingly ... the same test.
Thank you
Gilles

I've got a quick question for the experts on the capacitor fix. I've got a 2010 MBP that has the GPU issue and finally decided to take action. I bought one of the appropriate replacement capacitors as detailed on this thread and took it to a local computer guy who was unfamiliar with this particular issue but agreed to do the capacitor replacement if I supplied the capacitor. I'm not afraid of opening up a computer but soldering is beyond my expertise. Anyway, I figured that the end result would either be a fried logic board or a repaired computer. Instead, what I've got is basically the same issue persisting (and maybe a little worse, GPU panics seem perhaps even more frequent). Any thoughts on what might be going on? Faulty soldering?

What type of capacitor did you use?
