So glad I found this thread. I have started having crashes at least once a day. Fingers crossed this works! I ran the utility as directed. I see that the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext info.plist file has been updated to run at speed 2 only.

I did reenable SIP after running the utility. The kext still loads. It just fails validation.

Thanks for the tip! I also reenabled the SIP and it still works!
(though, will have to disable it every time apple sends a system update, but the extra effort is still worth the extra layer of SIP security)

Cheers!

Unfortunately, with SIP enabled lately my MBP again started having crashes.
I had to do the whole procedure again (with SIP disabled) and now its working fine again.

I don't think it is possible to have both - a modified kext and SIP enabled at the same time!

Hiho,

First of all, thanks a lot Fabio for the effort you did here!

I downloaded they kext file like 3 months ago and it has been working perfectly (no crashes) for the past 3-4 months or so. Unfortunately, I've had issues since installing the 2 updates just released these past days. It started experiencing kernel panics again.

Due to this I have just installed the newest CPU panic fix. I haven't had any crashes so far but my Chrome browser doesn't work anymore. It's just a completely empty windows and the program doesn't respond. On the other hand Safari seems to be working fine. Is there any way I can fix this?

Thanks :)

Best regards
Mark

Edit: after you have run the program it tells you to enable automatic gfx switching. Is this a mistake?
I turned it off again and now Chrome seems to work fine. Same goes for the sleep function which didn't work properly either when I checked it on.

Hi,

So.. I've the famous Mbp 2010 with a GT 330m. I remember that the problems regarding the loss of vid and those anoying kernel panic among with the imposibility to wake the computer after it went to sleep started around 2011 when the Lion came out. I sent my computer to Apple 2 times to get it fixed. The first time they did not solve the issue but in the second i did stopped having those specific issues that some many of u report in this thread.

Not having this issues doesn't mean that i don't have my own issues with this machine. After the second trip to Apple back in 2012 when they fixed those issues u all had. But since that momment i noticed that my machine does not get warm like it used to do... no heat means no load right?

When i had the panics and the loss of vid and all of that this machine performed like a beast with all softwares, very nice performace and ofc high temperatures, so high i would burn my hand just by standing my hand in the left side of the macbook.

I had the capacitor replaced today by a brand new (PANASONIC-EEFLT0D331R) even so i wasnt experiencing any of those issues u mention in this thread. I did it because i had hope that it would perform like it used to do before all of this.

I want to check you u people what might be the problem for me, my board was replaced twice, or atleast that's what they wrote in the final reports. the number in my board is 820-2850-A. Did apple replaced my high performace logicboard with a downclocked version of it or it's exactly the same version that you guys have inside your macs???

If it is the same version, why is my macbook running so bad in high performace when so i'm still on snow leopard and i'm still using the same software i was using back in the days. What is the issue here?

Also... there's a temperature sensor that does not work in my machine, so in order to get it running i had to delete that one 6.2.plist that stops the kernel task from taking all of my resources.

Can someone please help me out here. The computer is running exactly the same as it did without this panasonic capacitor. I've a 830 Pro Samsung SSD and the default 4GB 1066 RAM also Samsung.

Thanks in advance

I had GPU kernel panics back in the days, i sent it to Apple for repair and they did it on the second time i got it back. So what do they do to my machine? I lost performace in the process of getting it fixed by them. So, how can i revert this thing they did. I had the faulty capacitor and i was not experiencing none of the symtoms... Why is this?

How did you determine that you lost performance? Does the replacement board have the same CPU?

I see your MacBook has 4 GB of ram which may be too little for your daily use.

As far as I know, Apple didn't do anything except replace the motherboard with an exact duplicate. They did the same thing with the 2011 15" MacBook Pros.

My machine does not gets hot even if i'm running heavy apps like Photoshop or Premiere, moving canvas in Photoshop is really slow, as for all the experience with the software. I used to run 3D Max studio using win7 with Parallels Desktop and it was all good back in the days. I could run anything in this computer. And now i can't, i'm still using the same version of OSX, i've the same version of the adobe products i had and everything but no performace at all.

Also it's noticeable in the Activity Monitor's icon in the Dock that the bars don't go all way to the top as they did before everytime i was running heavy apps like the ones i mentioned. Also the fans were running at full speed most of the time to get the temperature down and now i can have them running at 2000/3000 rpm tops that nothing bad will ever happen, because everything is freezing cold compared to what it used to be when i had performace :(

This is really annoying, i would like to get this solved, last time i really enjoyed working on my Mac was around late 2014.

How about resetting nvram and SMC? Not sure this will help very much.

I've done that a million times now :( I really don't know how to fix it. It's just frustrating to have the horse power and the machine always act like it's a cheap computer that people buy just for browsing. It must be a way to force it to go into power state mode and actually make use of its full capacity

Hi everyone, sorry first for my english.

I just bought a used 15" Mid 2010 Macbook pro and as expected it has the GPU kernel Panic hen switching to 330m gt and also both of the usb ports that are dysfunctionnal (first one doesn't provide enough power ----> usb flash works, flash hard drive works but all mechanicals hdd 2.0 doesn't ++++ i tried a non functionnal usb HHD 2.0 with two cables : one in the macbook pro and another pluged in phone power adapter directly to ector and it works perfectly, so it's power issue).
The second USB port doesn't work at all...

So i decided to restore the macbook pro starting wiht the Graphic issue. Now my question would be about the choice of a new capacitor to replace as i have those two choices :

1-Getting a dead logical board and take off capacitor like this
2-buy one of these capacitors : EEFSX0E331XE or EEFLT0D331R ? i really dont want to scratch the mother board for space so if you have another good choice i'm all in...

Taking the original capacitor from another board is not a good idea in my opinion because the problem can come back at any time. The problem was that the original Apple capacitor was undersized to begin with.

The idea of the youtube video was to unsolder another capacitor, not the one with issue.
Beside that, what other capacitor do you recommand ? The two that i mentionned are good ones for not scratching the motherboard ?

Thanks for youre answer.

Different problem entirely on the 820-3332, but fixable. Follow the instructions I lay out in this video:

Just as the 820-2850 problems are often circuit related rather than GPU related, the same can be said for this machine. Not all cases, but a good amount of them.

You will note on boards that Apple has refurbished they support U8900 with a little rubber pad to try and prevent re-occurrence for the issue and on later models added this little pad - showcasing that as early as 2013, they realized this to be a design flaw. However, they did not announce an extended warranty until Spring 2015. :(

Hey Louis,

Could you please me out with an issue on 820-3332 having an ASD error saying Short Random Multi-Block Failed ?
It wont load OSX and hangs half way through the Apple Logo. The SSD itself is fine, I've tried in another machine and it boots up fine. Schematics point to CPU for handling SSD communications, but I don't want to heat the CPU.

Many thanks

The 820-3332 is a 15" retina? This thread is for the non-retina 15" MBP.

Hi Audit13.
Thanks for your reply, Yes this is 15" Retina. In the previous reply, Louis mentioned 820-3332 so I just replied to it with a question of the same board.
Apologies for coming in to the wrong discussion.

No apology is necessary. I just wanted to confirm the model MacBook that was giving you problems.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about your model to offer any advice.

Have you tried contacting him via his corporate website? He or one of his technicians may be able to offer some advice.

Any utility of updating the MBP to 10.13.6 from 10.12.6? Fix has been working fine without any crashes on 10.12.6. Obviously 10.14 isn't supported on MBP 2010 so the only update left is 10.13. Debating whether to update or hold off. Thanks for your suggestion!

As my kernel panics occur more and more, it seems that a capacitor replacement is inevitable. I’ve watched the videos and read this thread, but can someone clarify something for me?

I see that the EEF-LT0D331R is a very popular capacitor for this project, but does the EEF-ST0D331R also work? I see from the data sheet that the ST and LT are nearly identical except that the ST has 2 terminals versus the LT’s 3.
