Thought the exact same thing. I have also ordered both tantalum and non-tantalum. Except I am trying to do the repair myself:eek:. Still trying to decide whether to scrape for the non-tantalum or use the like for like option:confused:

This one could be another choice. It is non-tantalum cap and has similar size to original one.
I've ordered this cap and wait for it to arrive. I will replace the cap next week and see if it works.:D

Strange, I have a mid-2010 15" MBP with the GT 330M dGPU, but my Device ID is 0x0046 (Revision ID 0x0018).

Should the kext fix work for me too?

This Device/Revision is Intel HD Graphics.

5. Install new kext
Run "kextcache -v 1 -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions/".

I am having trouble with this step, as the console seems to be enforcing an 80 character limit. When I go over the limit, it starts to overwrite characters at the start of the line. Anyone know how to get around this?
[doublepost=1477063581][/doublepost]I used a bash script to get around the character limit, but the command didn't work. Unexpected argument, or something like that.

Then I rebooted and used Kext Utility instead, which seems to have worked. Fingers crossed... and thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread!

One note which may help others: after installing this fix, my-video playing apps (VLC, Popcorn Time) started to hang on startup.

Parallels also wouldn't start.

That was all fixed by disabling "Automatics graphics switching" in the Energy Saver system preference.

interesting, here it is not necessary. Including Final Cut Pro, Parallels..
How many FPS you have in the Cinebench?

Tried to install it to answer your question but there was an installation error (I even tried 2 sources but the problem was the same for both)
Okay.
Check if the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext is loaded. Like this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35721057/loaded.png

If not loaded, please check where error happened or install my edited kext.

because it was not to be with these problems using dGpu.

It is.

To be clear, I haven't had a GPU panic since I tried this fix, so thanks for that. But I have since identified two other problems:
- Automatics graphics switching must be disabled (as mentioned above)
- The MBP won't wake up from sleep mode

This is still a leap forward from 10 GPU panics a day, but would be nice to fix the sleep mode issue.

these issues are completely unknown to me, and really I have many reports that did not have these problems. Anyway, thanks for the info.

I have the same issue, currently running OS 10.8.5
Thanks for all the helpful information on this thread. Does anyone know of a place in the SF Bay area (yes, I'm 1 town over from Apple, but I'm not in the field, and don't know of anyone who fixes this specific issue) that can do the repair, hopefully for a reasonable fee?

Hi, having performed the excellent "fix" as provided by Fabioroberto, should we update MacOS to the latest version 10.12.1 released today, or might it overwrite/undo the fix? Thanks

Hi Lynmond, I bought the capacitors from RS Components but they only sell them in strips of 5, so I have plenty. If you PM me your address I'll happily send you a standard capacitor (as per C2D's post and Louis Rossman's Youtube video) and a tantalum capacitor (which is a like for like replacement) when I've had my logic board repaired. I must admit I'm very nervous having somebody stick a soldering iron on my motherboard, but I've searched and searched for a local shop and have eventually found an iPhone, iPad, Games Console, laptop repair shop that seems to have the required kit and appears to be competent enough.

If you want to order your own from RS, I got these:

Capacitor Polymer SP-Cap 330uF 2V - Stock no.: 8663696
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/alumi...3743D38363633363936267374613D3836363336393626

Capacitor Tantalum TPE series 2V 330uF - Stock no.: 7955878
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/tanta...3743D37393535383738267374613D3739353538373826

The fix on Sierra was a piece of cake, it really was. I grabbed this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35721057/10.12.AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext.zip and I used the other KEXT injection tool, KEXT Utility.

Hi, So sorry - only seeing this now - very helpful thank you!

May i ask, what is difference between the two links? Are both needed or just one, with one being better than the other?

Sorry if daft questions, as I say I am an amateur!

PS if you're ok with answering, what sort of repair price did you incur? (if you would rather not say, don't worry I'll understand)

You will only need one, the standard capacitor is supposed to be better, but you will need your repair person to scrape the trace on the logic board as the cap is bigger. The other link is for the tantalum capacitor which is the same size so won't need the trace scraping at all. I'm no even an amateur so I covered two bases in case the repairer didn't want to scrape to trace.

I've been quoted £45 and £20ish from two separate places but I would need to strip the logic board out of the MBP.

Within half an hour of the upgrade, had my first GPU panic since installing this fix.

Discovered that the kext had in fact been updated so had to fix it again.

Funny, I also upgraded to MacOS 10.12.1 tonight, from the preceding version, and on checking afterwards, the kext wasn't updated - all remains fine without having to reapply 'the fix'. If I understand correctly, Fabioroberto agrees...

After the update, the listing of extensions in System Information indicated the kext as obtained from Apple. Now that I have re-done the fix, it is back to 'unknown'

At first, I just looked at the date modified column and it was the same day that I last modified the kext, so I thought nothing had changed. Opening the kext, however, proved otherwise.

I've replaced the C9560 with this one:
P1050535.jpg

The length of this MLCC is almost identical with original cap.
I can directly replace it without scrapping the Logic board.
P1050539.jpg

After replacing the cap, no GPU panic and reboots happen anymore~~!!
It also passed the Cinebench test and exported screen to TV without crashing.
I suppose my macbook to be fixed completely. :D
All the information in this thread is very useful. Thanks everyone~~

Have just ordered the same from digikey. Can't wait to fix my macbook pro mid 2010.
Hope hardware fix is enough and there will be no need to inject kext. I'm on Sierra.

Cheers!

I just wonder whether you need a lot of special equipment to do this. I have a soldering iron and screwdrivers. Is there anything I need to think about before I start soldering on?

Humbly, Ylan

Edit: I wish to thank all of you for the valuable insights you've given me!
