Hi Lynmond, I bought the capacitors from RS Components but they only sell them in strips of 5, so I have plenty. If you PM me your address I'll happily send you a standard capacitor (as per C2D's post and Louis Rossman's Youtube video) and a tantalum capacitor (which is a like for like replacement) when I've had my logic board repaired. I must admit I'm very nervous having somebody stick a soldering iron on my motherboard, but I've searched and searched for a local shop and have eventually found an iPhone, iPad, Games Console, laptop repair shop that seems to have the required kit and appears to be competent enough.

If you want to order your own from RS, I got these:

Capacitor Polymer SP-Cap 330uF 2V - Stock no.: 8663696
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/alumi...3743D38363633363936267374613D3836363336393626

Capacitor Tantalum TPE series 2V 330uF - Stock no.: 7955878
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/tanta...3743D37393535383738267374613D3739353538373826

The fix on Sierra was a piece of cake, it really was. I grabbed this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35721057/10.12.AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext.zip and I used the other KEXT injection tool, KEXT Utility.

The capasitor i ordered is 2.5 volts. Will that work?? Did the kext fix. So far no panics.

I wouldn't be able to tell you I'm afraid, I just went with the specs shown on this picture https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...010-whats-the-best-fix.1890097/#post-23317162

Have you replaced the capacitor yet? That KEXT fix is an absolute god send... If the hardware fix gives me he full use of the GPU again that will be even better!
No I haven't. Waiting for the capacitors to arrive. But I don't know if it is okay to use 2.5V instead of 2V as describedBut 2.5 was the only ones I could get. I'm in Denmark.

Ordered the right one now.

cant wait for it to get here. A giant applause to fabioroberto for finding the kext fix:):)

I telephoned Louis Rossman's company in Manhattan asking the price of the capicitor installation on my mid 2010 MBP 15. I was told $350. When I noted that it takes like no more than 30 minutes to install based on the Youtube video, I got a very arrogant reply. I would not deal with these people or trust them because they are charging ripoff prices. I found a local computer repair person who did the job for me. Price? $95.00. My MBP hasn't had a problem since. And I just added more ram ($45) and an SSD ($70). It's like a new machine, at a cost of $210.

I hope this multi-quote thing works...

Just a quick question. When I have changed the capacitor, can I delete the modified Kext in finder or do I have to delete it with terminal in recovery mode??

this is not a problem with the fix.
Can remove with: boot into single user, type this command: rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext
after type: exit

Thanks ;)

After, install the original kext.
Okay. I am Not use to work with kext. Forgot to take a copy of the original kext before I installed the modified one. But I can see in library that a new folder was created called backupkext, with the power management kext. Is that the original? The size of that kext is slightly smaller than the modified one:eek:

If you made a copy to edit.. yes, inside this folder is the original.

Problem is the voltage on Framebuffer regulator PP1V in the logic board depends to an tantalum capacitor very very fragile. So, when voltage change from 1.05v to 1.806 the capacitor fails. So logic board is perfect, exception this capacitor.

Crash happens when I operate with Final Cut Pro, also happens right after I start OpenGL test in Cinebench. The crash is pretty reproducible and stale. Very strange thing is that Apple Diagnostics Service give passed on all video tests. Should I just ignore that tests and be sure that it's hardware problem?

Not sure how much information in can give, but just out of curiosity I tried to use gfxCardStatus latest version. It helps when working with FCPX in Discrete Only mode, but with Cinebench still crashing in Discrete Only mode / failing test in Integrated Only mode.

Fortunately I am friendly with soldering and going to use capacitor method. Right after this post, going to order capacitor and give it a try.

This is really last resort thread, because I was going to buy new second hand Macbook.

I'm another unlucky owner of Mid 2010 6,2. This looks similar to what I've seen in this thread:

Crash happens when I operate with Final Cut Pro, also happens right after I start OpenGL test in Cinebench. The crash is pretty reproducible and stale. Very strange thing is that Apple Diagnostics Service give passed on all video tests. Should I just ignore that tests and be sure that it's hardware problem?

Not sure how much information in can give, but just out of curiosity I tried to use gfxCardStatus latest version. It helps when working with FCPX in Discrete Only mode, but with Cinebench still crashing in Discrete Only mode / failing test in Integrated Only mode.

try my kext fix, if your gpu panic was fixed, have a sure that the problem is the cap.

@fabioroberto
I can confirm, both FCPX and Cinebench worked so far after your kext fix. Cinebench shows 10fps.
Have you tried lower states?
the .kext fix is to keep the GPU always into g-state 2 (or 3), when the voltage is 1.05v. anyway, the osx (or macOS) will try just this two throttling g-state(3 as low power/more battery and 2 that is the middle power and battery consumption). The state 1 and 0 use the 1.806v, where the cap fail.

The 10fps is the expected.

Hi all, I just joined this forum as I have an MBP with this problem. I have posted my error report below FWIW, and intend to fix the MBP with Fabio's kext fix, and replace the capacitor on iMacC2D's recommendation.

Can anyone confirm what a good capacitor is to use? Any surface mount 2-2.5V 330uF?
I found this one on DigiKey: https://www.digikey.com/product-det...c-components/2TPE330MADGB/P16190CT-ND/4146633

That's the one I've got as a like-for-like replacement.

But isn't that a tantalum capacitor that will fail again over time?

It is and I've also ordered non-tantalum capacitors as well, covering both bases in case my repair shop says that they won't bare a track on the logic board. I'd rather it fail over time again knowing that it can be repaired rather than leaving it slightly crippled with the kext fix.

I don't know if it's all tantalum capacitors that are bad, if there are better brands, what's causing it fail etc. It would be great if an electronics expert could shed some light :)

My preference when I take it to the shop is for them to fit a non-tantalum cap, but if they won't then at least I have one that's the same physical size and whatnot.

Thought the exact same thing. I have also ordered both tantalum and non-tantalum. Except I am trying to do the repair myself:eek:. Still trying to decide whether to scrape for the non-tantalum or use the like for like option:confused:
