Excellent post, andrejkw, many thanks.

My 2009 4-core Mac Pro uses a modest, yet very capable, EVGA nVidia GT430 1TB HDMI/VGA/DVI graphics card, which can be found used for $30-45. Performance in an HTPC application is excellent, using an HDMI cable.

I'm using OS Mountain Lion 10.8.4. It works perfectly, with the 4,1 firmware upgraded to 5,1, though it works fine with 4,1 also. 5,1 will allow use of 1333MHz RAM, if needed, though the stock 1066MHz RAM is fine for the job.

Adding a $50 internal Blu-Ray reader/burner in place of the stock Superdrive is a 10 minute job, making for a fine HTPC rig, much cheaper than a loaded MacMini with similar specifications.

I agree. The 4,1 and 5,1 are still very capable machines. They can also be improved by a simple upgrade of the Xeon CPUs.

Wow

Just wanted to repeat the same as others have said: THANK YOU!!

MacPro 3,1 with non-certified (PC) GTX Titan. I can now connect it directly to my TV and get audio. The first reboot was kind of scary as I got a white screen only with a pointer. I pressed the power button on a quick tap as you would when waking up the computer from sleep and I got a login screen.

From there, it was to the audio output choices and picking my SONY TV as the output, and voila, beautiful screen and audio while watching Oblivion.

This worked great in 10.8.4! Could hear audio out the HDMI port of my $30 fanless Asus Geforce 610 video card.

Just did the online 10.8.5 update and I lost audio. I reinstalled this patch and rebooted but still no audio. There an update in the works?

False alarm. No audio on first reboot after reinstalling NVAudio. Got audio on second reboot for some reason.

DisplayPort?

Hey there!

I've recently upgraded to a GTX 680 in my 4,1 MP and was hoping to use this kext to send audio from the card to a compatible monitor over a DisplayPort cable instead of HDMI, but currently nothing shows up in Preferences. Is this a limitation of the software, hardware or my setup?

Cheers :)

EDIT: Nothing shows under System Report > Audio either, although a quick search in the console yields:
Code:
26/09/13 5:07:06.000 PM kernel[0]: NVAudio: Found 0x10de0e0a on PXS2
The 0x10de0e0a is consistent with the card's details listed under >PCI Cards, so I guess the kext is finding it but not allowing output?

EDIT2: Tested with an HDMI cable and it works perfectly! I'd prefer to use a DisplayPort cable though, so I can leave the HDMI connection for a TV... Let me know if thats possible. Thanks!

This was one of the biggest things that I was missing on my Mac side. I'm glad I was able to find this with a google search. I was going to spring for an optical cable so I could hook up my Mac to my receiver, now I'm great!

THANK YOU!

File not found

The NVAudio-1.0.dmg file is gone.. can someone please upload it again ?? Thanks i really need it :)

When I disconnect HDMI monitor and then restart, the NVAudio stops working. So when I reconnect the monitor again I have to make a fool reboot!
Is it possible to fix it somehow? I tried unloading and reloading kext, it didn't help much :(

Thanks!

I believe that works natively on 5,1 Mac Pro with no changes required, or at least it does for the two official apple cards 5770 and 5870.

I think it requires a 2009 Mac Pro mobo or later, IIRC (I looked it up when my 1,1's HDMI audio didn't work).

I believe it worked with my PC 6870 in my 5,1 (not flashed) but I dont remember with 100% certainty.

My 5870 (mac edition) does HDMI audio just fine.

Tnx.
I have a 3.1 (2008 model) with Radeon 7950 Mac edition.
Running Windows 7 HDMI audio works fine, but not on OS X (10.8 and 10.9)

As it does work with Windows, I would think it's a software / driver thingy...

With a 3,1 I think you are out of luck. IIRC, people who have flashed their 4,1 with the 5,1 firmware suddenly had HDMI audio working. This implies that OS X already has the software in place, but does some sort of artificial check to ensure only 5,1 machines benefit from it.

Which model NVidia card are you using? I can't reproduce this problem with a GTX 680.

Unfortunately, I do not have a Radeon card to be able to see how AMD handles HDMI audio.

If you can PM your IORegistry dump, I might be able to take a look and see if there's anything that can be done.

Sorry, I just noticed that you're using 3,1.
Also, other users in this topic are suggesting that you may need to flash your 4,1 firmware to 5,1 in order to get HDMI audio working. A quick google search reveals a handful of guides on how to do this.

Oh, wow. This is something I was missing a long time ago. I had a 570 with the HDMI port running to my TV, and I'd boot over into Windows for some 7.1 PC gaming. I upgraded to a 760 just today (had to get my 1,1 up to Mavericks, now it works perfectly), but since the 760 can push more than 2 displays at once, I really wanted to see if I could get HDMI sound from the Mac side again.

When I checked awhile ago, the process seemed pretty convoluted, so I never tired, but this was about as simple as it gets as far as running PC cards in a Mac Pro goes.

So now I have a 1,1 Mac Pro running Mavericks, a GTX 760, 4 monitors, and one of them with HDMI audio. I really wish I would have seen this thread earlier, many, many thanks!

works for me

Contacted Nvidia on how to get my GTX 680 Mac Edition to output sound through the HDMI. They pointed me to this thread and it works perfect on my Mac Pro (early 2008).

So andrejkw post is Nvidia's official solution for output through HDMI.

It even works so VLC player can output sound through the HDMI.

Great job!

Stopped working on 10.9.2

This used to work fine with my GTX 680 over DisplayPort until 10.9.1, but has stopped working on 10.9.2 (audio output doesn't show up), although the kext is loaded:

22.02.14 19:33:27,000 kernel[0]: NVAudio: Found 0x10de0e0a on PXS1
22.02.14 19:39:03,897 com.apple.kextcache[1101]: kext com.exvision.nvaudio 100009000 is in exception list, allowing to load

Anyone else having this problem who found a solution?

I'm having the same issue too. I also can't get audio over HDMI in 10.9.1 with the Nvidia web drivers. This is with a GTX 760. I tried with NVAudio and without

Yes, I had this issue since using the 10.9.2 betas.

You need an older 10.9.0 version of appleHDA.kext until nvaudio gets updated.

I also had been benefiting from this, and had HDMI audio through my flashed GTX 680. Updating to 10.9.2 killed that capability. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to best remedy this? Would flashing my 4,1 to a 5,1 have any effect on this issue?

My comments about the 5,1 were in response to a question about audio on AMD cards.

AFAIK the only solution for Nvidia cards is the kernal extension that andrejkw so generously provided. For those using it, you'll either have to wait for him to update it or stay on ML. Also, pray he hasn't been hit by the proverbial bus!

Yep, I can confirm the newest update (10.9.2) seems to keep it from working as it stopped directly after I installed it. I tried re-installing three times and so far nothing. Sucks to find a solution just to have it taken away so quickly.
