Install break at ~95% - "OS X Doesn't install. Try again and use Disk Utility..."
Why?
I already format BOOTCAMP partition by Disk Utility to "MacOs Extended Journaled" just after installer start :(
It 21GB. Now try chk under Lion by DiskUtil - no errors, fix rights - ok...
Try to replace PlatformSupport and boot 10.8...
...

No big deal if it fails at 95%. Thats because it couldn't update the partition to boot 10.8. Just restart back in Lion and continue with the guide, replace platformsupport.plist etc

----------

I believe I have following all the steps on a MacBook 3,1. The install was successful and I'm actually posting this from within the Mountain Lion install. Sleep, facetime, launchpad and brightness don't work as expected, but I am also unable to watch YouTube videos in the Chrome browser. Safari is OK, not perfect but usable. I think this is because Chrome uses flash while Safari uses HTML5.

Have I missed a step, or is this a limitation of the incomplete X3100 drivers that are linked to in Post 22? Is there any way this driver might be improved over time?

One thing I'm not considering is trying out Developer Preview 1 with the 32 bit driver. Are there any reasons why the public release version with gimped graphics would be superior to the developer preview with graphics working? What exactly has been added/fixed since the preview was released?

MacBook3,1 should have full acceleration with Launchpad, YouTube working etc. Try and reinstall the kexts and fix permissions.

I have reinstalled the kexts, fixed permissions with disk utility and restarted, but I still can't get flash youtube to play. Launchpad "works" but it takes about 20 seconds to load. I'm guessing others are having a better experience? Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is wrong?

Will fix for iCloud / Dictation will be posted here or should I search a Hackintosh forum for fix?

Follow this;

Migrate method does work, but you have to do it during the initial setup. So heres what you can do:

1. boot in Single User Mode.

2. type (exclude the $)
Code:
$/sbin/mount -uw /
$rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
$reboot
3. You will see the setup screen again, use system migrate and create a new administrator account with a different name.

My other concern is will the first system update kill most of this and result in having to spend time redoing it like many Hackintoshes.

Thanks :)

Again - Thank U!
It works.
Hope U can do something with QE/CI for GMA950 and fix some lags (many unused kexts?)...

JUST FOR YOUR GUIDE:
1. When i put *950*.kext's to USB installer drive, installer doesn't start (error mach_kernel),
when i delete this 5 kext's - installer starts ok.

2. Pls add link for GMA950 kexts to #22 for simple find :)

Follow this;

Thanks for the advice, I tried the above method but unfortunately came up with the error device is no longer eligible to use iCloud, Ill try a clean install of ML and use migration assistant then to see if it works, will post results. Thanks again

Sorry to labour the point, but I have the same graphics card and I can't watch youtube in Chrome and Launchpad takes ages to load. Can you confirm that you don't have these issues (Youtube in Safari works fine for me, it's just Chrome that doesn't).

Thanks.

Check your HDD or use a different thumb drive

Hi again,

I did the test with the exact instructions followed now with 4 different thumb drives and one hard drive attached via USB, no luck. Do you have any other idea? This is really strange to me.

Thank you for any direction!

I thought as much. This means that the X3100 does not have full acceleration, most likely due to the 10.6.2 64 bit driver being incomplete. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I want to be!

Can anyone tell me if the very first developer preview is a usable operating system? With it being the only ML build released that can boot into the 32 bit kernel, it might be the most usable version for those with an X3100 MacBook, but I would imagine there are instabilities.

The way it's looking at the moment, I have 3 options, none of which really appeal to me:
  • Upgrade my computer (can't afford it)
  • Stick with Lion for the remaining life of my computer. It's running fine and I could probably get another 3 years out of it, but I don't want to get left behind.
  • Use a ML install that is either graphically borked or (potentially) unstable and unsupported

I'm leaning towards using Lion until the next MBA update, and saving every penny I can until then, but I have a wedding to pay for!

Guys, you need to understand that running ML this way is not going to be 100%. For starters, unless there is a way to run 32bit instead of 64bit, you are not going to get better drivers, since none of us are capable of writing drivers from scratch.

Secondly; this current method is in BETA form. ML came out recently, and getting it to play nice with GMA950 involved simply fooling the system into installing & using some pretty old drivers. To give you a visualisation, we've got ML running with cellotape, rather than soldering everything nicely.

Until then, please dont ask when are we going to see x drivers come up, or when facetime is going to be fixed etc.. I cant speak for hackerwayne's behalf, but you need to understand that some things like UDIDs cant be faked, and thats why you cant run certain services. (Otherwise we'd have Siri on iPhones without the use of Spire & proxies)

Much Love,
Trunkz / Your Mum.

I understand that nobody will be writing drivers from scratch, I just wanted to make sure my MacBook3,1 is running the same as everyone else's, which it seems it is.

The guide on post 22 states that the only issues with the MacBook3,1 are sleep and brightness. This is clearly not the case. And unless Apple suddenly decide to write a 64 but driver it's not going to improve, which is why I'm looking for an answer about the usability of Developer Preview 1.

MacBook3,1 launchpad is working. Flash on Safari is working too! Please check your installation once more. DP 1 is usable and in fact, quite stable, but most of the stuffs are unchanged (just like Lion). Im not sure whether theres some sort of "expiry date" for the DP, cuz for Windows beta build it has.

----------

Theres a way to use FaceTime and iMessage, but it requires a ML compatible Mac, and you will be using the compatible Macs UDID and tokens, which in this case, updates every 24 hours. How many of you actually uses iMessage, FaceTime & Game Center on your Mac?! The primary point here is to get ML working and not fixing useless stuffs like FT and Game Center. And like what Trunkz said, don't expect this to work 100% at this point, and don't ask when we will see it working 100% as nobody is capable of rewriting kexts from scratch

you don't have to change anything in that mpkg, just follow post #22 like everyone else. You replace the file in your thumb drive, not the ISO. Dude, to be honest, just get 2GB ram. Forget about getting it to work with 512MB or 1GB. Its not gonna work, It will install but trust me, its pretty much useless.

giving up for the moment...

hello

I have been trying for several hours now, but some things in post 22 don't work for me:

Full instructions:

3. Right click on OS X Mountain Lion.app and click "show all content" Navigate to Shared Support and drag "InstallESD.dmg" to your desktop.

- I can't drag the file to the desktop (will produce an Alias), have to copy and paste it

5. when its done, go to the newly restored 8GB drive, navigate to System>Installation and replace the file "Packages" with the one in InstallESD.

Packages on the the 8GB drive is an Alias, Packages on InstallESD is a folder on the root level (3.85GB in size here)... what do you mean by "file"? I rerplaced the Alias with the folder...

7. Open up both ZIP files. You should get a folder called MountainLionHack, and it contains 2 folder, which is CoreServices and i386, and a file called OSInstall.mpkg Open up the 8GB thumb drive, navigate to /System/Library and MERGE the patched CoreServices folder in, when it ask about files replacement, click replace.

I think hidden files should not be merged...

8. Reboot your Mac and hold down "Option" while booting. Select the thumb drive and hit enter.

I am getting the "no go" logo immediatly...

btw: I can boot the Mac (Mac mini) with no problems from a USB-Stick with Mountain Lion Retail produced from InstallESD with no changes.
I'd like to have a MacBook4,1 running ML ;-)
