I have an idea about the brightness issue but cannot confirm it yet:

What if brightness control does not work because the "unsupported" graphics chips have not been considered in brightness control itself?
=> AppleBacklight.kext ?
=> AppleBacklightExpert.kext ?

Idea: Can anybody provide me (or guide me to) a patched Lion 10.7.4 boot.efi for MacBook4,1 Early 2008 so I can boot the Lion 64 bit kernel (I already found a patched one for 10.7.3 - would this one work for 10.7.4?). Then, I will add the 10.6.2 64bit kexts for the GMA x3100 and see if brightness control works. If it does, it should prove my theory...

What do you think, guys?

UPDATE:

So I used the boot.efi from this thread and booted Lion with the 64bit kernel.
I installed the X3100 64bit kexts (and plugins+bundles) from 10.6.2 and brightness control is NOT working => so the answer should be the X3100 kext itself.

BTW: I also tried only replacing the kexts leaving the Lion plugins + bundles => kernel panic!

UPDATE 2:

YouTube only works with hardware acceleration DISABLED!
Default Lion Screensaver works though...

Trouble with MacPro1,1 ATI5770 ?

Hello,

Followed the guide and installed to a separate partition.

At the end of the installer get a message about not being able to set this device to a startup device. Which may or may not be an issue as I can see the device in the <alt> devices at power on.

Selecting though (after replacing Platform....plist) and booting to it hangs at the Apple logo and spinning progress wheel.

If I try in verbose mode it runs the disks checks and then just goes blank. Typing anything in here and the screen resets after a couple of seconds.

Anything I have missed ?

Actually checking the logs from the ML partition from Lion looks like the WindowServer is crashing with SIGSEGV). Humm.

EDIT: Seems the crash was in the AMDRadeonX3000.bundle - moved it out of the way presume it's using stock ATI5000.kext now for the 5770 and it's booted ! Just running Migration Assistant. See what happens now.

Thanks.

Hello Everyone!
I followed all steps of #22. I get this in verbose mode "Still waiting for root device". I've got a White Macbook of Late-2007 and on the list of attachments there are the specifications of my macbook and the error that i get during the booting from USB! Any idea?

franc3sc0,

are you using a USB hub? If so, then try to plug in the USB pen drive directly into the USB port.

MacPro1,1 ATI5770 - video issues.

So got ML installed on this but no iTunes video files show, no Cover Flow etc.

I thought this was supposed to work perfectly :)

As per my previous post I have to remove AMDRadeonX3000.bundle to get it to boot at all as WindowServer keeps crashing.

Any ideas on how I can/should resolve this ?

Thanks

Maybe you did something wrong when "merging" the files ...
Would you please explain how you merged the folders ...

Well that may be the problem ...

You should copy only the contents of each folder (and subfolder!) into the corresponding folder (and subfolder!). Replace files if asked.
But if you replace the folder itself it will delete many many files (I also did this mistake at first ...)

Be aware of the new 18.8.1 update. My MB 3.1 doesn´t boot anymore. It must be the new mach_kernel because there is no new boot.efi or platformsupport.plist.

any ideas?

What are you booting from USB, the installation or ML itself? On supported systems it should work but in our case I think it's better to use a second internal partition. That's what I did at least and I think that's written in the guide as well.

I had no problem with 10.8.1 nor now with 10.8.2 (it's legal.). Actually 10.8.2 installs straight from the pkg file. No problems with the supported system plist file this time

so, will i try to re-download the image-disk of Mountain Lion?

Well, I wouldn't go THAT far. I don't wanna k now how you've got your copy, but assuming it is the retail one just follow the guide step by step. Reformat first your USB drive (Extended MacOS journaled). And watch out for the merge. That simply means to get the content inside the patched folders and copy them into the installation folders with the same name.

If it still doesn't work I'd try with another USB device.

Wonder if this would allow 10.8.2 to just boot without mods.

No, I think it's more like 10.8.1 installer checked if the system was supported, while 10.8.2 didn't. Also 10.8.2 is a beta update, the GM may still have the check. The full installation in the App Store for sure, otherwise people will end up buying ML without having the kexts for it..

Ah, the AppleHDA kext must be reapplied since it gets updated..

I figured that was the case but then I had a bit of wishful thinking. I also noticed the next 10.7.X update focuses on graphics and was curious if anyone had seen any updates to any of the kexts we are having to work with currently and if any of the updated ones would behave any differently.

But I have already installed the X3100 kexts as the hacker asked, before. With these kexts done, those problems continue.

Nobody answered my answer. I have already installed the X3100 kexts, but I don't know if these are videos drivers for making iWork, iLife and iBook working.

The X3100 kexts are nothing else than the device drivers for the GMA X3100 GPU. Which isn't supported by Mountain Lion. if the iApp arenìt working fine it might be because they use some particular graphics libraries that gets unstable using those kexts. Expect problems like that arising any time.

I've managed to install mountain lion.. thanks.. but it's too slow!

Is there a solution for this?

Does the iApps work on Snow or Lion at VMWare?
