because most files are hidden

Maybe and hope same one can upload to "internet HD" share it ^_^

I am able to see the hidden files with - defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE in terminal.

I got this from my other mac. and transferred the dmg to a flash drive and then to this hard drive. This is the file I used to install it on my other, newer mac. (below is what is stated on page 1)

* Get a supported Mac and buy it directly from the App Store, copy it to a thumb drive (8GB or larger) and transfer it back to the unsupported Mac.

Install

My format for the INSTALL (8GB) drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
When I get info on my install OS X Mountain Lion from my application folder, it is only showing 24.1MB in size. (the dmg file that I downloaded is 4.44).

Inside my dmg I have Install OS X Mountain lion app, Library, Packages, System FOLDERS.

I don't think all the files from my install DMG are being copied over to my Application folder, just the app is.

I don't think that you can use a a DMG file, you need the APP.

Oh, now I see where the problem is. The files that me and derickjsmith have are not from the App Store. The App Store version is bundled in a .APP file, while we have a .DMG file that contains a .APP file with around 21MB and three other folders.

The thing is, since this is an experimental process I won't spend my money without seeing if I can use this as my main OS and replace my Lion installation. I know it my be considered piracy, but I take it as a trial. The only thing we can do is try to find the .APP version somewhere. And that's what I'll do and if it works, I will buy it from the App Store.

DMG is NOT SUPPORTED! for the last time. Durh. The .app file in Applications folder has to be larger then 4GB. Im wondering, is my instructions from post #1 not clear enough? BUY THE APP FROM THE APP STORE.

We should really ban people that pirates stuffs on this forum. Or should i include piracy checks in V0.3? To prevent people from using the 20ish MB .app file & DMG, ISO, ZIP.

Im pretty sure you used the app thats why it worked.

----------

I understand your point of view, even though I disagree. And I understand that I'm on my own from now on. Thanks for the help anyway.

Im pretty sure if Apple allows ppl to "try" it before buying it they would try it forever instead of buying

The real reason for me being so pissed is that i clearly stated the .app file would require to be 4.XXGB and in the Applications Folder & i expected that to be done. I was figuring why it did not work for you guys just to realize you didn't use the .app file

That's one way of looking at it. And i can assure you that if this works as well as I hope, Apple will get my money soon enough, don't worry. And don't forget that you're altering a copyrighted closed-source product, it's not exactly within Apple's terms. But far from me wanting start yet another discussion over this, this is clearly not the place. You've made your point and I get it, I've made mine, let's leave it at that.

I can see that now and I apologize for the trouble I caused.

For those who ask what im saying, basically i just pretty much introduce myself in chinese. And learned that his from Taiwan. Nothing much. Right back to MLPostFactor. Im working on V0.3 atm, unfortunately, im not able to get AFP working. (Always KP when connecting) pretty much sorted out the rest except iSight & NumLock LED.

OFFTOPIC!
If anyone wants to ask a question, but English is not you're mother tongue, i can understand and respond to the following languages:

EDIT: Oops. This works for 10.6. I assumed (incorrectly) that it would work the same in 10.8. Sorry.

I found a workaround to control the LEDs of caps lock and num lock
https://github.com/busyloop/maclight
But I don't know how to use it :/
Maybe any of you know the coding can help?
Thanks in advance!

I know just enough about Terminal to know that I really don't know much, but I think that I managed to figure out the maclight thing.
I downloaded their .zip file, and then ran their install command:
Code:
gem install maclight
I waited for it to finish, and then went to the folder it had made in my home folder. I then went to ~/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin with Terminal:
Code:
cd ~/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin
Then I spent a bit of time figuring out how it works.
The shell command I think you want is
Code:
./maclight keyboard toggle -n 0
That sets the numlock led to be off (0).
Of course, the maclight commands assume that you're in the ~/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin folder.
I hope that helps.

Wayne, you're so awesome for being only 17yr old but already helping many of us upgrading our macs to Mountain Lion.

I'm impressed that you speak so many languages. esp. French.
I'm a 華人 as well living in the US. I speak English/Canto/Mandarin/and Vietnamese and I thought this is already way too much for a single person.

Keep up the good work. I'll try to help you answer trivial Q's on this forum.
Some people just don't read the OP. (I knew the other guy was missing the 4.xx gb app just from what he was describing but I didn't want to assume he pirated ML)

Hi, i have 10.8.2 working just fine on a Late 2007 Macbook, can i update to 10.8.3 normally ?

1st post ;)

If you want to do combo update from 10.8.x to 10.8.3 follow the steps below:
1. Download the combo update but don't install.
2. Follow the guide above till step 2 (but select 10.8.3!! Very Important!).
3. Install the Combo Update, reboot into the "Install" partition important!!!
4. Go to Utilities, and select MLPostFactor. Once complete,
5. Reboot into 10.8.3 Mountain Lion
6. Enjoy!

Thanks! I speak canto & hokkien too xD. I honestly didn't know he was missing the 4GB file because i assumed chaliwang told him he needs to have the 4GB file. (see quote) Maybe he didn't read it or he thinks the 4.XXGB InstallESD would be fine, which is not.

try recheck:

update :I see , Because You have same name Install partition name,Change the one of Built-in hard disk Install partition name , This Work

otherwise:

1、 4.XXGB Mountain Lion.app is REQUIRED to be in the Applications Folder.(ISO/DMG useless)

2、copy it (4.XXGB Mountain Lion.app)to your Applications folder.

3、Make sure system language is English(I'm a Taiwanese Chinese,When I first time in Chinese language mode, doesn't work.

I would have expected a coding error since 2 forum members are having the same issue. (honestly didn't expect both didn't saw the 4.xxGB app required quote). So after making sure my app got no problem and that i can't replicate the issue im scratching my head thinking what could possibly go wrong, so i came back here to look for more clues, just then i saw his attachment saying its only 20mb. Lol! I am implementing more checks in V0.3 to prevent future forum members from accidentally using the 20mb file instead of the full app..

Recommended not to upgrade. 10.8.2 is more stable then 10.8.3, but if you really want, then read post 1 & post 2. Do note that you won't be able to downgrade if you find 10.8.3 unstable (there we're reports of glitches while using Safari & Chrome always crash). A clean install is required to go back to 10.8.2.

I will be doing a Question & Answer video. It can be about anything, not limited to geeky/IT stuffs. It can be about my opinion on things, what you think i should work on next? (seeing this wonderful project is almost ending), . again, not necessary to be an IT/geeky questions. You can Tweet me @Wayne_819 and i will cover your question on that Q&A video.

My file wasn't a pirated file, I followed the instructions on the apple website on how to back up my install app, to burn a bootable disk or usb drive. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4302239?start=0&tstart=0

I was able to go back and just transfer the actual file, not back it up, and the app file is 4.37GB.

Your instructions were clear on page 1 - * Get a supported Mac and buy it directly from the App Store, copy it to a thumb drive (8GB or larger) and transfer it back to the unsupported Mac.

I assumed that a burned disk or usb drive of the file for backup would work. No where does it say to transfer just the app file, not the backup dmg.

----------

I was able to run MLPostFactor to the INSTALL drive. When I rebooted, I am able to see EFIBOOT drive, which brings up Mountain Lion installer. I ran through the install and got a failed message just like the instructions said, when I reboot, I get a grey screen with just circle and a line thru it.

That is all I see. I tried to reboot again, and held the option key down and I can see my OSX, EFIBOOT, EFIBOOT, and RECOVERY DRIVE.

Did I miss a step?

Thank you for your help.

Of course, the maclight commands assume that you're in the ~/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin folder.
I hope that helps.

That's really helps :)
I would try this later, it seems my problem could probably solved in 64 bit.
