Ten people were in the meeting...

Five iPad Pros (including two of the most recent M4 models - one 11 inch and 1 13 inch, mine)
4 Windows Laptops
1 Macbook Air

And people claim iPads aren't for work?
Yeah, an iPad is a perfect device to quickly email your assistant and tell them to do a bunch of stuff.

Er you can use both an iPad Pro and Mac you know. I mean we all do (fintech) :)
“Er,” I think you missed the point a little. From what the OP said, these executives were not taking both an iPad and Mac or PC to a meeting

Nah, you really did miss the point.

For example I'm am one of those people @cjsuk was referring to. I work on a Mac desktop in my office but may take just an iPad (with keyboard) when away from my desk.

Actually, I also have a MacBook but even though I like the machine, I use my iPad far more often.

Why care what people think, if it work for you it’s great.

I have been iPad only since the m1 and work on it, I don’t care if someone think its not for work, it pays my bill it’s all I need.

Its’s not for everyone but all I care is if it works for my needs.

I actually prefer the MS apps on my iPad over my MBA, on the MBA I have to restart Teams every day as it just randomly decides it no longer wants to open and when it is open when I enter a meeting it’s pot luck what audio device it wants to use regardless of what the OS is using.

We were GSuite users previously and that was effortless on a MBA/P in Chrome. Everything worked as it should, sharing files was 100% easier (than Office) and collaboration was very smooth (versioning is great - I know Office has that now).

Hardware wise we rarely got an issue with an Apple device over the life of it but Dell laptops… expanding batteries, broken hinges, broken ports etc Yes they are cheaper to buy but TCO I’d wager is not less.
I find ms apps awful on ipad. When I do my wife’s accounts I download a basic csv file from the bank with a years transactions and It constantly goes sluggish when scrolling fast. also how do you have 2 excel sheets side by side? I couldn’t figure it out myself as it wasn’t obvious to me so I had to google it and it was hard work managing the window sizes.

I think it’s a beautiful device and great for basics and viewing photos and even editing but as a day to day for office work in excel I find it difficult. I also find emails difficult with attachments as well. Especially the ability to drag them off to the desktop Or files app.

A meeting is for presenting and discussing! Why would you need a laptop for this? The work has already been done so an iPad would be great for just reading off and dotting notes. I’m sure they used their computers to do the other 90% of their tasks. Can it be done on an iPad, of course. Can it be done as efficiently, unlikely.

At the university I work at, you will find mostly Apple devices for laptops, Windows for office desktops.
Same at mine. An increasing number of people are choosing the laptop option -- which often ends up being a Mac device -- for the ease of working in different locations. I'm also seeing more and more iPads in meetings.

And we aren't just spending money for the sake of it. Our institution is funded in the lower quintile of schools in our system. Budgets are legitimately tight.

Meetings are part of work. Being able to efficiently retrieve information, share documents, or join notes together (especially when you can cross projects) is a substantial element.

the above is the ipad powerpoint
and as anyone can see, it has very limited functionality compared to mac version

i can do only a very simple work on ipad powerpoint; when serious work comes, i have to switch to mac.

powerpoint is just one example; many ipad apps are mini versions of desktop applications

And ipad pro m4 with magic keyboard is over $2,000. considering this high price, its OS/software should offer far more than current one.

Ipad pro can be an only laptop for some, but it cannot replace laptop for me until apple allows full desktop applications on ipad pro.

This one is on MS, not Apple. MS has chosen not to offer full-functional Office apps on Apple products - they want you buy a Windows device.

those people don’t work. They look at pdfs someone else made for them.

At my company only Directors and up are allowed to get iPads and they seem to only use them to read emails. Meanwhile us peasants have to actually work on a crappy Dell laptop taking like 10 minutes to boot with a fan that sounds like you are launching a rocket.

no i said powepoint is just one example
many other ipad apps are similarly water-downed; even apples own apps like pages and many more (matlab, latex, and list goes on)

There are lazy people in all jobs but a lot of execs I worked with worked extremely hard, putting in long hours and dealing with a great amount of stress.

Nah, again you missed it. My point was that the most senior execs largely aren’t the ones producing the work disseminated in those meetings; they are the ones consuming it, and that’s why they can afford to use iPads. I worked in a large tech corporation for 10 years so I know this workflow. That’s why they can afford to take the iPad to meetings and leave the PC/Mac behind.

Maybe in your workplace. Every workplace is different.

One of the department heads at my workplace used to use his desktop Mac to create presentations, but then present the presentations in meetings on his iPad. Thousands of employees in that workplace, and hundreds of employees in that department alone.

Yes of course, which is why I said they’re good for meetings. I meant they aren’t as effective for the other tasks you may need such as in-depth research, data analysis, better multi screen support, specialised softwares, better file management and document editing. A lot of which possible of course, but arguably less efficient.

Snazzy labs does a brilliant recent video about how it’s a lot of the little missing features that Apple haven’t included that are holding it back. Of course if it works for you then great, but for a lot of tasks it just ain’t it!

In my recent meetings with biometric tech leaders I’ve found they actually use ReMarkable.

Nothing against the iPad Pro, but one anecdote about a meeting with 10 people doesn't mean anything.

If I wasn’t in Computer Science and in design, I’d just have an iPad or two, with a base Mac Mini for anything else the iPad couldn’t do.
