First time I've used Handbrake in quite a while...nice update. Still wish there was a way to "stitch" videos together like in VisualHub.

I think that's true. I ripped from an avi file ok with 32 bit vlc and 64 bit handbrake. Didn't notice that vlc was 32 bits until I tried to rip from a dvd. I had been using 64 bit vlc 1.02 but vlc reported a newer version and I blindly hit the upgrade button and got 32 bit 1.03 in its place. Had to reinstall 1.02 64 bit. Wasn't easy to find on the vlc website.
Soooo, can you give us the link to 1.02?

Edit: Found their repository of old versions: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.0.2/macosx/

I still shake my head with disbelief that this application is free. And the support ain't so bad either.

By the way, Handbrake will never incorporate a ripper like MTR. It was removed prior to .9.3 so the developers could stop looking over their backs for a large truck with the letter "MPAA" on the grill. Not sure who wants that kind of grief...

i will love it once handbrake incorporates the functions of mtr
Er, HB will *never* have the function of mtr. mtr only makes a direct copy ( or attempts to make a direct copy) of the dvd itself. HB does not nor will ever do this. HB is a transcoder/encoder. Do not hold your breath. It will not happen. Though I might note that HB can transcode dvd titles which mtr currently cannot. Two totally different tools for two different purposes.

I've been using handbrake non-stop for the last two weeks (got about 1,000 DVD to put in to iTunes) so any speed bump will be most appreciated.

I have been having trouble encoding with handbrake. Audio problems. I had about 10 files that I ripped from Bluray that I wanted to re-encode for ATV. The video went fine but the audio was dead. Not a sound.

I purchased iSkysoft and it did them all perfectly.

It did cost me 30 bucks, but it was worth it. I now can re-encode my underbelly series as well as P90X videos.

Really disappointed with handbrake.

That is probably because the libavcodec libraries can't decode the audio from the disk. Try posting over on the Handbrake forum with a full activity log so they can see what is going on.

Can handbrake convert this????

I've been searching for the answer to this question for a couple days now so someone please help me out here!

I've got some great blue ray rips that have been compressed down to about 1.4 gigs in Mp4 format. They play on my imac just fine using quicktime or vlc however: I need to stream them to my xbox 360 via connect360 to watch them on my big screen and it's not working! I have tried several different settings on handbrake and even got the video to stream but no sound. I keep hearing handbrake can convert any file....can it convert this?? What am I doing wrong?

Does handbrake realle encode anything???

I should mention I am running leopard and the latest version of handbrake. Are there any other recommended programs for converting blue ray files to play through xbox 360 via connect 360 while retaining as much quality as possible? Thanks!!

Why doesn't it look for VLC in ~/Applications? That is where I have it installed.

The rule in OS X is that there are 3 standard places for apps: /Applications, ~/Applications and /Network/Applications.

At least you can get yours to play. .9.4 wont even play on my 360. I'd like to use it but since they took away the 360 preset i can't get them to work.

Did you try using the new normal preset, as the .9.4 announcement states?

There are no more presets for the PSP, PS3, or Xbox 360. Quite frankly, they didn't work well. None of the development team members own the devices, so testing was minimal and support was nonexistent. Keeping up with the firmware vagaries and ambiguous specifications of these devices was not fun--we get enough of that from Apple's kit, and those we all have around to test on. The new "Normal" preset should work perfectly fine on any device that supports standard Main Profile H.264 with AAC-LC audio in an MP4 file, which the PS3 and 360 ostensibly do.

Thanks, I'll try the normal pre-set. For the audio, what does the "LC" you're referring to stand for and where is it? I only see AAC (CoreAudio) and AAC (faac) I'm currently trying to encode UP and I selected AAC (CoreAudio) My set-up is included a few posts up. Thanks!

Holy crap, the 64-Bit version is FAST! It jumped up 2x in speed for Apple TV HD encoding from an Eye TV stream. Was getting around 35fps, now 70fps. Nice.:D

I love this program. Thanks to all the developers.

Any word on if the official version works with Meta-X or I am going to have to migrate over to Lostify?

I checked the Activity Monitor while it was running and it was not running in 64bit, yet it is a lot faster at encoding. Am I missing something?

Also I am having problems with the DVDs I rip and my Apple TV now! The files look fine when I play them in QuickTime or any player on my MacBook Pro, but after I store them on my Time Capsule and sync them to my Apple TV (3.0.1) they have SERIOUS macroblocking and artifacting... they look horrible. What is going on? Anyone have a clue, or having the same problem??? :( I tried restarting my Apple TV and deleting and resyncing the files and once again, they look perfectly fine on my computer, but crap once synced. Is it likely a compatibility issue with Apple TV 3.0.1 and the new Handbrake 0.9.4? Everything was fine until I updated to 0.9.4.

This sucks! I'm right in the middle of ripping my whole DVD library! :(

P.S. Can Handbrake rip Bluray discs now? If so, how?

Handbrake is the only software I've donated to. Brilliant.

Thanks to the devs for the update.

I just ran it through its paces this weekend

The speed is amazing, the picture quality has improved with increased speed and overall...... just wow.....the live preview is fantastic.

Thank you handbrake....

Donate if you can... this is one of best shareware programs out there

hmm

pretty confused at the moment.

i ran a test on my brand new (literally hours old) i7 stock imac on a 720p rip of stargate universe (episode 3). here are my results.

32-bit
- ~750% CPU usage.
- no other processes used > 5%
- ~210MB Real RAM
- Read/Write to HDD 4MB/s / 1.5MB/s
- CPU ~68°C, CPU fan on ~1500.
- 5 mins later hit ~2000 to keep at ~70°C. HDD + CPU fan hit ~2000 each and bring CPU temps down to ~63°C HDD at 57°C constantly
Problems:
- Finder quit and reopened? did not seem to effect computing
- annoying MDS process game in 15minutes into test and continued until conversion finished, 20-50% CPU usage entire time.
- Once finished, i tried to play the file. the audio was cutting in and out roughly every 0.5seconds. annoying

timer stopped when handbrake reached 100.00%. avg. recorded as well.
time: 24mins 59 secs
file size: 3.26GB
avg FPS: 40.33

64-bit
- ~550-600% CPU usage.
- similar results to 32-bit, temperatres/fans were not as high. computer responded a lot better.

Problems:
- None! no MDS (because no large file size). fans didnt spin up completely, computer responded very nicely.
time: 22mins 12 secs
file size: 668.7MB
avg FPS: 45.83

end result: i have provided a screen shot, they are in PNG format so clearly compressed but i think that the 64-bit handbrake is more superior to the 32-bit version (i focused my attention on the reflection coming off the glass bottle, that seemed to show the differences nicely).

file size is a MASSIVE issue with the old HB! WTF is going on there!? i chose both :apple:TV for both conversions, very confusing.

anyway, i hope that i can help a few people out.

the first image attached is 32-bit, second image is 64-bit.

Hi guys

Just wanted to check, I have a Mac Pro 2 x 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon so am I right in thinking that I need the 32Bit not 64Bit?

Thanks :)

Donate?

Stop being silly. Handbrake is free, there is no way to donate, and there never has been. Not that the individual developers don't want your money :)

just that life is a lot simpler in an open source project, especially one that depends so heavily on other open source projects, if there are no issues with money at all.

Our lives are fulfilled simply by achieving the goals that we set for ourselves, and the thanks that we receive in forums such as this.

Cheers Ed.

Like others have said, i can't believe Handrake is free considering the features it has. It also has more reliability than most paid applications i've used. I would happily pay for it, but anyhoo....

This new version gives me around 130fps on DVDs with my Mac Pro. It's lightning fast.

Quick question though, when encoding using the x264 codec, how do i get files to play in Quicktime Player (either 7 or X). At the moment i just get the sound and a solid green picture throughout the whole thing. I'm aware i can use VLC to play it, and i imagine Perian might make it play, but unfortunately i would like to use the files with Final Cut, and Final Cut Pro hates Perian and of course won't work with VLC. Works ok with the FFmpeg encoder though, so it's not the end of the world if i can't use x264.
