For the people that got VLC in 64bit, is it stable? I also looked through the different versions they have and got the 64 bit 1.0.2 that someone also posted here in the first page, however, while reading their forums or FAQ's, someone asked if using the previous built (1.0.2) in 64 bit was ok compared to the latest (1.0.3) in 32 bit. The explanation came back as VLC not being solid at 64 bits and to stick with 32 bits.

I downloaded the 64 bit version of handbrake but it asked for the 64 bit VLC, so I then downgraded to the 32 bit version of Handbrake. I won't be using it much, but I will use it heavily these coming weeks. What do you guys recommend? Sticking with the two at 32 bits, or going 64 on both of them?

I was wondering this my self.. I saw people say 64bit VLC was unstable so I didnt downgrade to 1.0.2
So basically I havent even been able to test out the new handbrake yet. :(
Anyone having any problems related to VLC?

novice here, apologize in advance.

avi removed, does that mean that i can't convert .avi to .mp4 using handbrake anymore?

thanks.

No, you can still convert from AVI to MKV/MP4/M4V. You just can't covert from WMV/MKV/MP4 to AVI.

I should mention I am running leopard and the latest version of handbrake. Are there any other recommended programs for converting blue ray files to play through xbox 360 via connect 360 while retaining as much quality as possible? Thanks!!

I've been retired from the dvd rip scene last couple of years but just started playing around a couple months ago. xbox360 I hated always having to rencode the audio to stereo and remux it. Did it with the $5 mkvtools. Also did ps3 media server which works with xbox360 but it's pretty lameway to do it. Then few days ago got myself $120 WD Live TV and stream all bluray rips DTS 264 mkv untouched from my two NAS devices. Let's just say I'm deleting all my dvds and starting over fresh with bluray. I plan on keeping all my video content .mkv h264 really think that's the future.

makemkv works pretty decent and when it gives the fatal error then use handbrake. wd tv live doesn't handle tv episodic (multiple titles in .iso) so most likely have to output .mkv for each episode with handbrake.

With 1TB $60, 1.5TB $90 2TB $140 or thereabouts now is the time to archive bluray rips which I'd say on average are about 12GB a movie. Which is about 77 movies per 1TB (931GB).

Also just use Air Video $3 if I wish to watch on iphone. Can transcode with my iMac onthefly 1080p bluray rip no problem.

You can still open AVI containers to encode. You just can't choose AVI as an output anymore.

97fps on my i7 encoding wall-e :)

Not sure why, but it's 270 fps average on mine on the second pass (in x64 mode). My settings were 2 passes, turbo first pass, the rest were standard pre-sets.

I was a bit embarrassed last night when it encoded 4 movies for me in about half an hour. All that speed.

I'm trying to migrate my movie collection from iTunes to my PS3, now films without subs are fine but for some reason I can't get subs to work using handbrake (on my mac or PS3).

Anyone have any presets ideas?

Anyone have any ideas? :)

Macbook is going up to 84 degrees C when using handbrake to encode a small file on universal apple preset. Anyone else noticing temps this high?

Using a UB MBP 17inch.

much much faster

have been using caveman's guide for BD-->aTV and was taking around 8-9 hrs on imac...

-with 0.9.4 only going to take 4hrs!!!

iStat shows 90 to 92 C regularly on my mbp 2.16 c2d. Yes, hb and more specifically x264 will suck every cycle your cpu has ... and then some. Which is why its so fast.

I'm trying to encode some of my classic DVD's(Top Gun in this instance) to the preset Apple TV format in the wide-widescreen ratio of the DVD, with chapters and chapter names included.
The VIDEO_TS folder rip sits on my HDD.
My problem comes with the finished product - Both the video and audio are a garbled mess. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I'm running Win7 32bit, on an Intel Core 2 Duo t6400 @ 2.00GHz(for what it's worth).

Impossible for anyone to know with the info provided. what preset or settings are you using ? Does the video_ts folder play okay with something like vlc. What did you pre-rip it with ? Pastebin an activity log from HB and post the link here. Help others help you.

"Normal" setting stinks with PS3/32" 720p LCD

I just upgraded to the newest version of HandBrake and gave it a spin. I am encoding my DVD collection to play on my PS3. With the old version, i used the PS3 setting and they looked great, even on my 47" 1080p LCD. With the new version of HB, they did away with the gaming presets as you all know, and suggest using the "Normal" setting. this defaulted to holding a constant quality of ~60%. I just tried out my first rip to ensure that it would work on the PS3, and on my 32" 720p LCD, it looks horrible.

Has anyone else had this experience? Could I just set an average bitrate instead of the the constant quality? My rips went from being around 2GB per movie to 700MB for this one.

Handbrake will let tweak parameters after you load a preset, you can even save your changes as a new preset. Just load up the normal profile, then change the quality mode to "Average Bit Rate" instead of Constant Quality. You could also try pushing the quality slider up a little bit.

What app did you use to copy (decrypt) the DVD to the HDD?

If I recall correctly, on Mac you have to install VLC but I don't think that this method works on Windows?

Newbie question

Hi guys,

New to this forum and newish to dvd ripping/encoding etc.

I gather from reading your posts that most of you rip a DVD to the hard drive first and then use Handbrake to do the encoding, I have just been using Handbrake to do it all. Is it quicker/better to rip to the HD first...and if so...what do you use to do the actual ripping?
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question to you guys!!

Btw...I have both Handbrake and VLC in 64bit.

It is just more of a strain on your CD(DVD)-rom drive, that's all. Using this method puts undue strain on the drive itselft. I use a cheap external drive so I don't really care, I let handbreak handle the whole job as well. But if you are using your internal drive on an expensive Mac, I wouldn't advise it. ;) There is a finite lifetime to anything with moving parts. :)

I rip my DVDs first with MTR purely so I can queue them up overnight for converting with Handbrake. Puts less strain on the optical drive and the conversions with HB are usually MUCH faster from the HDD than the optical drive.

Most optical drives now have something called riplock that slows import of data from the DVD but this doesn't happen from the HDD.

If I rip directly from the internal drive I might get 35fps at most regardless of import setting so what I do is use an external DVD drive (without riplock) to rip the DVD (15 minutes) and then use Handbrake. The extra 15 minutes time to rip the disc is more than made up for by the extra speed of the encode.

For xbox 360 users

To all you xbox 360 owners having issues with videos playing back, make sure you deselect the 2nd audio track. It will not play any video with the 5.1 track in the video. I use the apple universal setting with the 2nd audio track turned off. Videos come out looking good and have had no issees with them running on an xbox 360.
