@polimedia:
On my first try I had the same problem! You have to make sure that you DON'T get either of the following messages:
Code:
AirPortBrcm4360.kext is not valid; omitting.
IOBluetoothFamily.kext is not valid; omitting.
Make sure that you get the following two messages instead:
Code:
kext-dev-mode allowing invalid signature -67061 0xFFFFFFFFFFFEFA0B for kext IOBluetoothFamily.kext
kext-dev-mode allowing invalid signature -67061 0xFFFFFFFFFFFEFA0B for kext AirPortBrcm4360.kext

I started all over again with the original (unmodified & backuped) files and the first thing I did this time was to repair the disk permissions in disk utility at the beginning. Also remember to delete the previously patched files in /System/Library/Extensions/ at the beginning.

Good luck!

GREAT THANKS, I probably spoiled the kext files somehow.
I digged the old files from the time machine and, this time, all worked an both continuty and handoff appear to work fine.
Thanks for the support

Disk Permissions

Thanks for the tutorial! Handoff now works on my machine, super stoked.

Question: If I now repair my disk permissions will I lose the modifications I made following this tutorial? Will my machine undo the changes to the kext files?

Can i Never repair disk permissions!

You can repair permissions. That will not hurt anything.
You may loose the mod if apple does an os update that changes those kexts. So you can either keep a backup copy of them or just redo it if an update ruins it.

Partial success - all but Handoff

Thank you, UncleSchnitty for compiling and monitoring this thread and to all he acknowledged for working this out! Fantastic deep research to get there.

I've gone through the tutorial, seemingly successfully, but Handoff still isn't appearing even though it's enabled. I'm on a mid-2011 MacMini and an iPhone 5 running iOS8.1. All troubleshooting steps have been accounted for. AirDrop is working between my phone and MacMini, so is call forwarding and SMS. I've twice cycled Handoff settings and iCloud login (on both devices, with reboot) and twice repaired disk permissions. Handoff functionality just isn't appearing.

Anyone else encountering this?

I screwed up the install on my early 2011 MacBook.

Is there anywhere I can download an original Yosemite version of the IO8012Family Text file to reinstall. I think that would fix my issue, but I was stupid and deleted the original file.

Hi,

I am stuck on Step 16. When I attempt to save the modified file, 0xED gives an input/output error message and I cannot save the modified kext.

I have indeed done the repair permissions step. Any ideas to help??

Thank you

If you have "enable handoff" in general then the kext edit has done its job. The only suggestions I have after that is what I put under troubleshooting and maybe try restarting your devices a couple more times. I have had it take some time before handoff worked that has to do with the "handshake" that basically tells each device its ok to interact with each other. Usually signing out of iCloud on all devices, rebooting the Mac sining back in to iCloud then doing the same on iDevices has cleared the issue. Sorry I can't be more help, maybe someone else here has run into that issue.

Are you modifying the kext copies that you made on your desktop?
Also can you screenshot whats happening?

Yes, the original kept files are on my desktop, and I open them with 0xED using the desktop pathway specified.

I make the changes described; I don't suspect an error here because I tried multiple times trying to get past the I/o error message from 0xed.

I can send screen shots tonight.

Thanks

Same exact thing happened to me -- I got nothing back from step 7.

When I tried to put the kext files back - it said they were invalid. Now I've got no wifi or bluetooth.

enter your password if it asks, even though you won't see password when typed and press enter. Happened to me last night when I followed the instruction from the other threat.
Worked great on my Mac Mini 2011

Doesn't work for my MBA mid '11 :(

Hey UncleSchnitty!

I tried to follow all of your instructions (several times) and I actually think I have them all right, as it prints out "1" at the end of step 27.
Still it says my Bluetooth wasn't available and it just wont show Handoff in the Settings (which might be a reason of it, not recognizing I do have Bluetooth).

I tried redoing IOBluetoothFamily.kext multiple times, also I did the whole thing over and over again. None of the users solutions could solve my problems either.

I hope you have any ideas.. ;)
Thanks!

I would reboot into recovery mode (command + R) and reinstall yosemite. It seems something got corrupted in your system that shouldn't have.

UncleSchnitty, thanks a lot for your manual! After some struggling it worked!

Can anyone confirm SMS Continuity works on MBA mid 2011 after these manipulations? Cause, unfortunately, it doesn't work in my case however. :(
... So, can anyone on MBA mid 2011 confirm or disprove such troubles?

Not quite the answer to your question, but this might help ... I've got a MBA 13" Mid 2011. Yosemite on the MBA and 8.1 on my iOS devices.

*Without* special modifications, the following Continuity features are working:
(1) SMS Relay
(2) Calling using Mac <-> iPhone
(3) Personal Hotspot

The only Continuity feature that isn't working is application Handoff. I doubt I'm going to install UncleSchnitty's very clever hack ... I'm not sure I'll be using application Handoff very often, and the other Continuity features are working fine for me.

. . .

cMacbookPros:Mid 2009-Mid2012 requires new bluetooth/Wifi card and Modified Kext.

cMacPros:Early2008-2013 requires new bluetooth/Wifi only

NMacPros:Works OTB
. . .

I have this laptop:

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011)
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,3

It is unclear to me, if this will work on my machine or not. Could someone please confirm if this will work on my machine or not.

much appreciated

This is very true SMS relay is a feature added to iOS 8.1 under settings-messages-Text message forwarding (or open iMessage on the computer and a message should appear)

Calling is done thru FaceTime/wifi so that should work.

Personal hotspot is another feature that does not need this kext edit. However this feature pre 8.1 was wonky on if it would work all the time.

This Kext edit enables Handoff and Airdrop. If you only need the other features you don't have to do this edit.

I have this laptop:

You need to update the bluetooth/wifi card before this will work.

Happy with this so far..

By any chance, could you help me with the part number of the item.
I just want to make sure i have the good one:

That's it, just make sure that's the one they are actually sending you. I've heard people advertising that one and then it's the older one when it arrives so wherever you get it from just message them and ask to be sure. Also it will be written on the card when it arrives so check that too

Thank you so much for the extra bits of info, i'll make sure to ask the seller; and to read it from the part once it will arrive in my possession.

Hope to receive it soon, so that i can start to get on with it ..

Would it be helpful if I use Disk Utility in the recovery mode to do the permission repair?? I tried several times, but it seems like useless.
