Handoff on 17" MacBookPro8,3 Early 2011

First of all I would like to thank everyone involved in this tutorial. I was able to get my hands on a .....CAX Wireless card and after using the Continuity tool my MBP is using Handoff/Continuity features both ways, as well as Airdrop. My only issue right now which I am hoping someone here can help me with is that I can't get my MBP to make/receive calls. Every single time I try the call drops. Is there a fix for this or is there nothing to be done? Thanks in advance for your help.

since call's go via your local wi-fi - my guess would be that this has less to do with your Mac/iPhone but more with your Router setup... here there are a number of variables that can have an impact.

Thanks to the contributors to the Continuity Tool!

Sharing my own personal data point:

MacBook Pro 15in (mid-2010)
aka MacBookPro6,2
Yosemite 10.10
Continuity Tool 1.0.2

As expected, I had to change my built-in wireless card to the model mentioned many times in this thread: BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX. I found a decent listing on eBay for a card that had been pulled from a mid-2012 13.3in model.

I was able to follow the instructions in the iFixit guide for my model: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBoo...2010+AirPort-Bluetooth+Board+Replacement/3040. I was also reminded that sometimes Apple’s assembly plants are generous with their blue screw locking goo, because I stripped one of the screws holding the plastic card housing :( Be careful!

As noted in other threads, the CAX card is not a drop-in replacement for this model MacBook Pro. Although the card is the same size, there is an extra antenna connection on the CAX. The cable connection socket is also in a different place.

Some things I learned:
- The shortest antenna cable connects to J2
- The middle antenna cable connects to J1
- The longest antenna cable connects to J3
- The additional connection point (J0) can be left empty.

I had to really cut away a lot of plastic from the plastic card housing in order to keep the CAX card in the same orientation as the original card. I had to trim the ‘top’ (near the 3 antenna connectors) in order to plug in the J2 socket. I also had to cut away a good chunk in the middle to expose the new location of the cable connection socket AND to leave enough room to actually re-connect the cable. I finally had to trim a small amount near the J3 connector to properly route the cable and allow the connector to fully seat.

All of my trimming meant that I was unable to actually screw the new CAX card into the plastic card housing. I used a small amount of very thin double-stick poster tape to lightly join the new CAX card to the card housing. Basically, I wanted to tack it in place so I could re-assemble everything. After reinstalling the card & housing assembly, it was pretty easy to connect and route the various antenna cables.

One last ‘gotcha’ was that the cable socket placement on the CAX card means that the existing cable is now too long to fit flat and snug along its path. I didn’t see any way around it, so I creased the cable as cleanly as I could, creating a z-fold that took up the excess. Everything seems stable so far, but I’m sure the stress I’m putting on the cable isn’t a good thing for the long-term.

After an open case boot test to make sure everything was reinstalled properly, and that I was receiving the proper wi-fi signal, I made a trip to System Information to see if the new Bluetooth portion of the card was working. Success!

Running the Continuity tool and following the post-install instructions gave me a hiccup-free install of the modified kexts. Thanks again for the scripting and installation package work—it made that portion of the install a dream!

Continuity seems to be working properly (2-way) between my iDevices and the MBP. Mail, Messages, Safari, Pages all worked right away. I haven’t spent time getting Numbers or Keynote working, but I understand they make take some fiddling with.

Hope this write-up helps other folks with mid-2010 MBP models!

brad

did you take any photo's of the final setup?

So I just installed the card and applied the Continuity Activation Tool. Handoff works. AirDrop works. Instant Hotspot works. Everything works.

Thank you!

Worked for me on Early 17" Macbook Pro

Bought the BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX card from ebay, cost about £20

Coudlnt find a guide to install it for the 17" but followed this iFixit guide for the 15" Macbook pro and it was easy:

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBoo...2011+AirPort-Bluetooth+Board+Replacement/5886

Use the Continuity Activation Tool - which was a few clicks and took about 10 mins

https://github.com/dokterdok/Continuity-Activation-Tool

All done and I have all the features working perfectly fine ;-)

From OP
Note: Earlier MacBookPros then listed and 13"+17"MBPs had the wifi adapter in the screen hinge so newer cards will not fit inside of them.

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to give you some feedback to what happened to me:
  • Correct Card Apple Broadcom WiFi Wlan Bluetooth BT 4.0 Card BCM94360CD
  • Correct Adapter (from OSXWifi)
  • Correct Procedure: I Followed ALLLLLLLLLL instructions
  • NOTHING - The DAMMMM thing would not work

I have an Early 2009 MacPro, and I installed all Developer Previews of Yosemite (the current install is an update from the 1st). I believe this could be the cause of the issue.

According to the instructions I should have it working without the Kext Hack, but at first it didn't happen.

In my case what SOLVED THE PROBLEM was logging out, restarting the mac, and loging in again in ICLOUD.

This is very important since just checking and unchecking stuff would not do the trick (like icloud Keychain).

So, if you are desperate, and don't know what else to do, just do as mentioned, or, create a new user, and fully enable icloud for him.

Cheers,

Thiago

Bought the same card, adapter and extra bluetooth aerial from OSXwifi, installed correctly (not great instructions!) in my 2010 3.33 Mac Pro. After the new install Bluetooth was still using the old card (I could see it in System Profiler), so I disconnected the ufl cable and the power from the old card, trashed the bluetooth plist, shut down, reset the SMC restarted and then I could see the new Broadcom card in System Profiler. I can see it there, but the bluetooth is not working at all - wifi is ok, bit slow, but does connect.

I drove 100km today to buy an extra bluetooth aerial just in case that was the cause - no luck.

Tried your fix, but it didn't work either.

Am currently waiting on a reply (they take ages to reply and the time difference doesn't help) from OSXwifi.

This is extra frustrating as it was supposed to work straight out of the box.:(

Any idea what I should try? Oh and I'm still running Mavericks on this machine.

Handoff enabled on 17" MBP mid-2010 "MacBookPro6,1"

Hi,

First and foremost a huge thank you for the tool! Thanks for the hard work, very much appreciated, probably saved me half a days work...

I successfully installed the Broadcom ...CAX card in my mid-2010 17" MBP. The card doesn't fit into the Airport/Bluetooth card holder that the old one sits in but leaving the holder out altogether and just connecting the 3 antennas as described above worked.

I then ran the tool and that was it. I had to sign out of iCloud on all devices and then log in again, starting with the MBP and then the iPhone and iPad. That made it work. Airport is also working.

Sorry, didn't take pictures but the card is basically sitting loose in the plastic tray next to the optical drive, just held in place by three antenna cables and the big flat bridging cable that connects the card to the rest of the system.

Now I just have to find a way to ground that bluetooth card to the chassis - something that the card holder did before I took it out... anyone have any suggestions?

I have a Late 2009 iMac 27" i7 model. I already purchased the Broadcom BCM94360CD. I just ordered this adapter from eBay. It says clearly that this it the adapter for this Braodcom card.

Once it arrives I'll try the install and see how it goes.

So, I finally received the Mini PCI-e adapter. The BCM94360CD fit into the adapter perfectly, and the old wifi module's two cables fit onto J0/A0 and J1/A1 connections. With swapping the old wifi module for the new wifi module, I have 802.11AC wifi that works flawlessly.

Now the BLE 4.0 is a different matter. I have to get an extension cable, and try to connect the current bluetooth antenna with the new wifi module.

Has anyone with a 2009 iMac had any success with the BLE 4.0?

New CAX Airport card problem

Hello everybody. Yesterday I installed the CAX card on my Late 2011 17" MBP.

Bluetooth LE was detected right away, but the Wi-Fi is missing. In the System Profiler, the Wi-Fi page doesn't show any hardware.

I have tried PRAM and SMC reset, and rebooting several times, but it has not worked.

I also booted Windows 7 (Boot Camp), with the same results: Bluetooth is OK, no Wi-Fi.

I swapped my old airport card back and Wi-Fi is detected, Bluetooth is detected too. I then installed the CAX card and, once again, Bluetooth LE is detected but Wi-Fi is not.

I'm sure all physical connections are correct.

Any suggestions? Or is the card damaged?

Thanks!

I got the BCM94360CS2 for my 2010 Macbook air the other day and I've run into a few problems
- The card is longer than the original one, so the screw mount doesn't line up (not terribly critical, I don't think that card is going anywhere) and the antenna cables don't reach.
- WiFi works...kind of. I get poor signal reception and it drops off all the time, probably because the antenna aren't hooked up.

Any thoughts or ideas? There is not enough slack for the antenna to reach, so I'm not sure what to do...

That's awesome! Thanks for the excellent pics too. Really helps to answer a lot of questions. I've got the same Late 2009 27" iMac. I have parts on order from OSXWIFI for about two weeks. Hopefully they'll be here any day.

Hopefully all you'll need is an antenna extension. I've seen a few for sale online and probably have some links somewhere I could dig up. Question is: how long of an extension do you need? Did you happen to measure that when you had your iMac apart?

Is this what you're seeing?

The new card they sent me have a busted component, so it's going back anyway.

The antenna length is a big problem. Don't know if anyone make an extension. Maybe you can put in new antennas?

I need about 6-8 inches. So I ordered two of these just to be safe. They will be here Wednesday.

Once they arrive, I'll unplug the old bluetooth module and connect the bluetooth antenna to the new module and pray. I hope this works.

Hi all,

Using an early 2011 MBP here, bought the CAX card and installed.

WIFI works on boot but no recognition of any bluetooth hardware. Has anyone encountered anything like this? Did I just get a faulty card? Can't run the Continuity tool due to hardware mismatches.

TIA

I have the opposite situation, Bluetooth works fine but Wi-Fi hardware is not recognized.

So far no solution other than trying a different card...

MacBook Air 2011

Just got handoff working properly with my laptop yesterday, and today I see a software update for 'MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.9.1'

Anyone know if this is safe to install or will it kill handoff?

So we still don't know if the Bluetooth adapter is seen by the operating system?

Read your post wrong the first time sorry. When you plugged it in did it pick up bluetooth in system profiler?

I don't know if they are wired the same but my 2011 macbook air had the same problem. I ended up clipping the wire holder off on the screen hinge and it gave it enough room. Check this out like I said idk if they are similar but its worth a look, it could be the same issue and if it is its easily fixed by clipping that piece of metal.

I did some more tinkering. I unplugged the original bluetooth module, and the system profiler did not see the new bluetooth module. So I did some searching, and found this thread. So it looks like on the Late 2009 iMac, I have to look into giving it power from the USB to allow the system to see it.

I read and re-read the thread you linked. Didn't see any reference to the Late 2009 iMac. Someone mentioned a 24" iMac from 2009 but not a Late 2009 27". Maybe I missed it. Also, to be clear to the best of my understanding you're not looking to bring power from USB, you're looking to bring the data D+ and D-.
