This looks like the culprit. I don't even have that folder. Do you have OS X Server Edition installed or something?

Edit: Our posts overlapped. Looks like it related to something you are doing with server. I'm not familiar with what that folder does in Server Edition, so I'm afraid to suggest a fix.

I was running my home business and had plans of using the web server among other things. I thought too late after the reinstall that maybe leave the server off as it asked for confirmation on the initial setup. But I had already done it. I have turned all services off. I thought it might be a log issue. I was watching disk volume decrease over moments before the fresh install so it seemed to be continuous data. I noticed that mail app was logging connections, don't recall enabling that, so I turned that off. The fact the disk filled up overnight after disabling ruled that out. I can do a fresh install and leave off server as I watch to see if the disk space systematically fills up. Still very odd behavior to delete 4GB and end up reducing system size from 98GB to 50GB. I am seeing lots of other issues with High Sierra. First time in a long while I have had a buggy upgrade. Maybe patches out soon.

I've got the same problem - system disk is 858GB and apple support can't seem to find the cause. I'm pretty sure it is some hidden files, possibly timemachine local backups.

Here's what I get with sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /

Thanks. I'm on high sierra and doing that in terminal didn't make any difference. It could be that the local backups are not the issue, but maybe it is that they are not deleting properly?
That command should delete them if that was the issue. You have 749GB in Volumes there. Disconnect any external drives and try this:

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /Volumes

That gave me this:

0 /Volumes/Transcend

749 /Volumes/Untitled

749 /Volumes

749 total

Transcend is a backup HD, but disconnected. Not sure that the other bits are.

I just did something that reveals the hidden folders in Finder. Is it normal to have Parallels at 100GB?

Can you see Untitled in Finder?

Try it with that closing slash at the end like this.

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /Volumes/Untitled/

Can you see it in Finder?

What if you click the desktop then hit shift-command-g then paste in /Volumes/Untitled and enter.... what do you see?

"The folder can't be found."

Could this be an error caused by a volume being disconnected before being ejected? Has happened when the cables have become tangled. Could it think there is a volume there that doesn't exist?

What would happen if I deleted that Untitled folder in the hidden files? (Assuming it lets me).

Yes... that is possible, but it scares me to just delete without knowing what might be there. Are you pretty sure you have not saved anything there?

I don't see anything there that looks off. I think what is happening is just the storage readout there is wrong. Reindex Spotlight by running the command below in Terminal and it should fix it.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

Give it a half hour or so to complete.

Since this thread continues to have reports I’ll update my outcome as posted several months ago.

I was reluctant to do a reinstall ad I was getting by without major issue after not launching the Server application. Though I suspect some operations may have contributed I didn’t check.

Eventually I bricked mid install when the latest OS came out. I did a reinstall and update. Lost no data and have had no problems since. Including running the Server application. Evidently there was something corrupt causing my issue.
