I don't see anything there that looks off. I think what is happening is just the storage readout there is wrong. Reindex Spotlight by running the command below in Terminal and it should fix it.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

Give it a half hour or so to complete.

Had the same problem, this fixed it for me @Weaselboy you're a legend

You can do the same for the ~/Library folder:

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g ~/Library

Are you on HFS+ or APFS for your system drive?
How many user accounts are on the machine?

If you want to sort the results by the size, use:

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g ~/Library | sort

Only one user. Looks like HFS+

Definitely something wrong there. Run the command @tsialex gave you there to drill down more.
Looks like the containers is the problem. Is there a fix?

Keep on drilling down...

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g ~/Library/Containers

Also looks like you have about 30GB of Mail saved. That sound about right?

Yes I have 30GB of mail. I've have to change my hoarder ways.

Looks like this is where the problem is:
187 /Users/christinesullivan/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

Unless I need to drill down further.

I can't tell you how helpful you have been.

Might just be all your Mail then.

At this point it is easier just to use Finder I think to poke around in there.

Click a blank area on the Desktop then hit shift-command-g to bring up the go to folder dialogue, then copy paste this in and hit enter. That will get you into the folder. Then you can comand-i (info) on the folders to see what is going on. Make sure you backup before you start messing around in there though.

Code:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

So it looks like Google is trying to kill me. This text file is 158.46GB [imap.gmail.com-5AA1925F-F1CC-42AB-942F-9915B97FB74C.txt]. Is that something I can just delete? Or will that mess something up?

The best way to proceed is to close Mail, reboot, log in, then move the offending file to another folder, like your desktop. Open Mail.app and check if you have any problems. If all is well, delete the file.

I can almost guarantee you, you will mess up your Mail stored IMAP GMail if you delete that.

What you could do is go to gmail.com and in the IMAP settings lower this message storage setting. The older messages would still be on gmail.com if you ever need them.

Might also be worth running Mail app sysdiagnose. Has magically cleared some strange issues in the past. Few versions back there were log errors that would continually grow and this helped to keep in check for some reason.

terminal:
sudo sysdiagnose -f ~/Desktop/ Mail

Will generate a log file to your desktop when it's finished running.
[doublepost=1547752965][/doublepost]Is the 158GB file in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Logs/Mail?
Check in Mail > Window > Connection Doctor to see if the box is checked for "LOG CONNECTION ACTIVITY"

Thanks you both for all of your help. I ended up deleting the gmail accounts from Mail and then deleting the log files. I'm going to try accessing the email from the browser for a while. Might go back to mail to see if it has the same problem.

@Weaselboy thanks you for your help I couldn't have done it with out you. Can I buy you a virtual cup of coffee? Or is there a way to donate to MacRumors to keep this amazingly valuable tool on the net?

So the Users folder is consuming 407 gb, while I dig into it the current user is only consuming 106gb. I have deleted the second User profile before running the commands, so there is only one User profile now, so not sure where the other storage is going. Can you please advise how to get back the storage?

Any help here is highly appreciated.

Are you sure the other account is gone and deleted, and trash emptied? Run this and tell me what you get.

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /Users

Thanks for the quick response @Weaselboy.

Yes, I see only one user profile (and the guest profile). The second user profile is deleted. I have emptied trash (trash had only 7gb and can see that being recovered under users) and ran the command again. Please see below:

Run these two commands in Terminal and that should kill it off.

Code:
dscl localhost delete /Local/Default/Users/thomas

sudo rm -rf /Users/thomas

I don't see anything there that looks off. I think what is happening is just the storage readout there is wrong. Reindex Spotlight by running the command below in Terminal and it should fix it.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

Give it a half hour or so to complete.

Hi Wieselboy, I think that I might be having the same space issue with my MacBook Pro High Sierra too. Please help me out, what must I do now to resolve this?
