Why am I surrounded by clueless people is beyond me. I know that difference long before you ever posted here.
You are the clueless one and no you do not understand the difference.

GSM and CDMA are NOT mutually exclusive.

If ATT's exclusivity contract in the USA covers all devices, it's possible that Apple isn't allowed to talk about opening up to another carrier until that contract is over.

the contract is over. iPhone will not be on verizon. because verizon want to own the Apple store or they wont accept it and apple told them to hit the happy trail.

The contract is over? No really. No one knows what is the length of the contract, so we can't say it's over.

After the iPad's announcement I bet that contract got extended.

My 2 cents(and I think a lot of people are very smart technically when it comes to how this all works with the technical side of things) is that Verizon at the earliest will get the iPhone in 2011. Apple is NOT going to make a CDMA chip for the iPhone nor the iPad. This is a dying technology. Apple might go with T-mobile at some point and most likely before Verizon.

But back to the coverage areas, I like the guy who used the map of the population in major areas and then showed the coverage. What is lost in the mix/translation is that AT&T's edge in those rural areas that there is no 3G but coverage is just as fast as Verizon's 3G. Technically, this is called 2.5 Edge. Kind of like right now AT&T is upgrading their 3G towers and that is called 3.5 which is capable of up to 7.2mps.

Things aren't always what they seem....with all that said, I think Verizon has a great network. I was with Verizon for 8 years and didn't have many issues. I switched to AT&T for the iPhone and have been just as happy with my service. I live in a Chicago burb.

One other point I just saw written about today but I don't see many people comment about, do you Verizon people out there really think Verizon's 3G could handle an iPhone population? Just think if Verizon would of been the one to get exclusivity. Their network would be getting hammered IMO and having just as many problems as AT&T. I talk to so many people that say before the iPhone, they NEVER had any problems. Bottom line is the iPhone is the easiest phone to get data and since people are paying the $30 for unlimited, damn right they are going to use it all the time.

Best of luck to Verizon with the LTE rollout and conversion from CDMA to GSM(sim cards). Those of you who remember when cingular went through this, it wasn't pretty and wasn't easy. So with all that said, an even safer bet is 2012 iPhone to Verizon.

After reading most of this thread, I feel like a good majority of you are missing the point by arguing coverage areas. Yes, the AT&T network is faster. Yes, Verizon has more coverage and yes, AT&T does cover 2/3 of the American population. I would even agree that Apple is unlikely to develope a CDMA iPhone.

The real problem that everyone seems to be dancing around here is phone exclusivity deals between manufacturers and carriers. The point is that such deals are just plain WRONG!!! We can argue coverage and speeds until we're blue in the face. But the fact is, if exclusivity deals like this didn't exist, we wouldn't be having this conversation to begin with. Having exclusive deals with carriers is a business practice that's keeping people from buying certain products. In many cases, it may not be because they don't want to get service from company X, but because they CAN'T get service through that company.

I myself have suffered the consequences of this reality. I left Verizon and got 2 iPhones -- I and my wife -- with AT&T. After 1.5 years with AT&T, I had to leave their service and return to Verizon because I moved out of the AT&T coverage area. If carriers didn't have these deals and the carrier technologies were the same this wouldn't have been an issue. Instead, I ended up selling my iPhones -- which I miss -- and getting two Droids. I'm sure there are others in similar situations where they'd like to have a Droid, but can't get Verizon because of lacking coverage.

Regardless of the phone and regardless of the carrier, these deals must stop!!!

Just because some of us choose to live in an area with more trees and less concrete doesn't mean we don't deserve good service. I am sitting in one of the most beautiful areas in the US, but since it is not highly populated AT&T won't take the time to provide service. Verizon does. Verizon not only provides service, but also provides an excellent 3G service. In a city of 4,500 tucked in the Black Hills of SD I can get the same level of service that is offered in the nation's largest cities. Heck I can even get the same level of service out on my parent's ranch which is 10 miles away from a town of 850 people.

AT&T can't compete with that and why not? I would say it must be poor planning or they have just decided that we are not worthy of a high level of service. Personally I find that appalling. AT&T thinks us rural folks are second class citizens. I receive the same level of speed and service (better in some cases) from my cable provider as people in the large metro areas do and I feel cellular service should be the same.

I can't support a corporation that treats me as a second class citizen. People who live in big cities wouldn't understand the feeling, but I do and I bet there are about 80 million more people that feel the same way.

I have Verizon. Verizon is the best phone company, i have a friend with AT&T , she HATES it. And For people who live in kind of forest-y areas, or go hiking and get lost or something, Verizon offers more 3G and regular coverage. If the iPhone where to come to verizon, GPS is a good thing with more coverage. Say you're on AT&T and you get lost in a spotty area? I'm not really sure if GPS is covered by 3G and stuff, but im just saying if it is.

In my opinion, Verizon is a win. Apple is making a mistake not giving Verizon a second chance. :apple::p

GPS works no matter if you got carrier coverage or not. It's a complete different thing.

CDMA is going to be around for a *very* long time. People continually bring up LTE on the shining light to the end of CDMA. Guess what folks:

NO.

Why? Because phones have to be backwards compatible, this means that an LTE phone on a CDMA network will STILL HAVE TO BE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.

That being said, I am still befuddled on why there are SO many pro-AT&T people on here. Why the h*ll should we care about what network? The NETWORK SHOULD BE DUMB, imho. The iPhone should be on every single network that it can. Why? Well, let me give you an example, how would you feel if you could ONLY connect your MacBook Pro on only one ISP provider?

That's what it's like on the Jesus Phone.

Listen, I love Apple. I really do, but just because Apple does business with AT&T DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO LOVE THEM! Ugh, some of the fanboy-ism on this board just boggles my mind. AT&T is *not* Apple. It's ok folks, you don't have to like them!

I just don't know how much longer the agreement is going to last. AT&T just partnered with the Windows Phone 7 for the launch. Rumors of an AT&T Nexus One and Palm Pre are floating around.

A lot of analysts said a Verizon iPhone was coming at the January event and turned out to be wrong.

Now a lot of analysts say no Verizon iPhone this year, maybe they are wrong again.

personally it seems like the most likely thing that will happen is verizon will get the iphone in 2011.

...But i've recently been aching for the iphone. If it does not become available to Verizon by 2010 I may end up shooting myself in the ear.

LTE is rolling out later this year for Verizon as just a data network. According to the Verizon CTO, they still have work to do to get talk to work on LTE, as do other networks.

He even mentioned, in a CNET article, that they may have to use CDMA for talk and LTE for data in phones until LTE's talk is as good as CDMA.

Plus, LTE is going to take a year or two until it's fully up and running all over the country.

I don't think Apple will wait till LTE is out because Apple values battery life. They won't push out a 4G iPhone on any network until they're sure it meets with their standards of battery life.

Verizon LTE phones are going to have CDMA in them for the next couple years anyway too.

I think a Verizon iPhone will come sooner rather than later. If Apple intends to make a iPhone for Verizon to expand their reach in the United States, I doubt they'd wait 4 to 5 years to avoid CDMA all together.

It'll come out this year sometime.

If apple doesnt come onto verizon this year, a few things willl happen:

a) android and windows mobile will own a larger market share than before. So when apple does decide to end their empire on ATT, it might be too late

b)the new iphone may fall flat on its face--make no mistake. the biggest advantage apple has over the competition is not the phone-its itunes and the app store. Android is innovative--in the past 3 years, what has the iphone done software wise to improve itself? Multi-tasking? don't get me started. Does anyone remember copy and paste and MMS? haha.

Apple is falling behind the curve...even the ipad is underwhelming to say the least.

At this point, apple needs verizon--not the other way around. And to those who say "wait for LTE", don't expect it distribution wide enough until at least 2 years. Phones will continue to work on CDMA until the transition is complete

Apple said they care more about high profit margin v high selling. So they would rather have AT&T bending over with a huge subsidy v AT&T and Verizon both giving low subsidies.

well

this is more true in the US most of the world is GSM this is why Apple went that route. not to mention traveling with a CDMA phone is impossible. the though that the Iphone not going to Verizon causing it's downfall is a joke! again there is still the rest of the world! plus many people like me hated Verizon! I canceled my contact and paid ETF to get away from them. We in the US have to get over thinking as ourselves as a World leader. OH cell phone service wise both AT&T and Verizon both suck compared to many other services. this thread will be going on for a long time to come I think! :(

The supposed qualcomm chip would be dual band which would eliminate the separation of cdma from GSM

My AT&T contract is about up. Two years of limited use and no reception at a high price.

Gots to move on until Apple and whoever decide to provide plans for modest usage on a network that is available where they live and work.

Also, part of the screen went dead and evidently there is no way to fix this! So, what now, throw it away?

Pay as you go with VZ until the other half of us can actually use the thing.

im not about to read ALL of these (but i did read a few)

The problem with At&T is that Verizon DOES have a wider coverage area.
The problem with Verizon is that AT&T has a MUCH faster 3G experience (where they have coverage)

Dont buy into Verizon hype because that is really all that is.... and to prove it: someone will comment on my post who is a verizon user and strongly disagree..... yep... exactly my point

Im not even an AT&T user (yet) and i know that they have the best 3G experience.

As for Verizon supposedly saying that they need to own all the Apple stores or its a no-go... THEY SHOULD BE BEGGING APPLE FOR THE IPHONE!!! It is THE BEST phone on the market by a landslide! Whenever a phone comes out that has 1 slightly better quality than the iphone, all Apple needs to do is say "App store" and its all over.... nothing comes close.

...but thats just my personal opinion...lol:D

Per the OP question...

I'm simply curious if I'm not alone on this one.

I remember watching the keynote but hating it was on ATT. It seems years later it may come out this summer or def. by next summer.

I'm just wondering if anyone has held out as long as possible.

Cheated: I did get the 1st Gen iPhone a year after it came out on ATT and had it for one week, but the quality sucked big time I switched back to my crappy old verizon phone.......................................

..........Heres to still waiting!

I bought a 3G but will switch to Google phone in July if the next gen iphone does not support Verizon. Period. Apps are great, but so are they on a Droid. I have had enough of the dropped calls in San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and New York City. It is nonsense.

you are correct

The supposed qualcomm chip would be dual band which would eliminate the separation of cdma from GSM

;) you would also think if Apple could it would have gone into the Ipad. Like others mentioned we have no idea what Apple & AT&T contract is only guesses or it might already be resigned. Till Apple announces other wise it's Apple and AT&T. many cell phones are provider exclusive!

I am grasping at straws, but do we know for sure that is it not?

You're new, so we'll give you a pass this one time :) However, just FYI:

EDGE is nowhere near as fast as Verizon 3G. EDGE max's out around 360Kbps, while Verizon 3G goes from 600Kbps up to 3Mbps.

Btw, "2.5G" or "2.75G" etc are just made-up marketing terms.

Thanks, I was about to go off again.

I'm not sure exactly why or how this forum constantly repeats that Verizon's 3G is the same as AT&T's 2G. It's obviously not. I just did a speedtest on my Droid using Verizon 3G and got 1482kbps download.

A quick 3G speedtest on the US fastest 3G network.
