It won’t run from battery?

The anker usb 3 Ethernet adapter listed above draws too much power to be able to be powered from the iPhone/iPad. The newer apple usb camera adapter includes a lightingning port to both charge the iPad & provide power to more power hungry devices, there is usually power close to a wired Ethernet port anyway.

If you absolutely need the Ethernet adapter to be only powered by the device, you will need apple’s usb 2 to Ethernet adapter (and either the older or newer camera adapter) rather than the anker one above, but it will be slower 100 Ethernet vs 1000 for the anker adapter.

I normally transfer a lot of movies and tv-shows to my iPad thru Plex when i go on travels, would be really nice to improve this speed and 900+Mbps sounds really tempting.

Is it this Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter you guys are talking about? And together with Anker USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter i will get this awesome speed?

Edit: found the answer on previous post, my bad for jumping the gun. How do i delete my post cant find that option?

One unfortunate thing is that all apps I tried so far (that access the device photos and videos, to share them with a PC, for example) require me to enable wi-fi and/or bluetooth even if ethernet is fully functional.

Is this a limitation from iOS or from the apps themselves? I don't understand why nPlayer Plus behaves the same way, but after a few seconds the IP (that I use in my PC to access the contents from there) appears.

In my case, 192.168.15.X:8000 for nPlayer.

All these apps, including this one:
https://itunes.apple.com/br/app/wifi-photo-transfer/id380326191?mt=8

Should work the same way, but they don't. Even with ethernet being used I need to activate wi-fi. Any suggestion for an app that can solve my problem?

Note: Airplane Mode is not being used anymore, so this problem is related to just pushing the wi-fi button (to deactivate it), in iOS 10.3.2. I finally used an EMF meter (Acoustimeter) and discovered Airplane Mode does not need to be enabled. I got rid of all the pesky warnings.

******
Update: I found a way to do it. It can be done by using nPlayer Plus (didn't check the free version), and works this way:

- The camera roll is visible inside nPlayer, but invisible when we share it with the PC. However while accessing the pictures and/or videos in nPlayer we may copy these files to another VISIBLE folder from nPlayer, and once this is done we can easily share with a PC.

So, with ethernet enabled (and wi-fi disabled) in the iPAD we can share photos and videos, using nPlayer. This additional step is required, however sharing this way is easier than using that other app, called "Wi-fi photo transfer".

I don't need wi-fi enabled anymore, neither the "wi-fi photo transfer" app.

Here's a link for nPlayer (the version I use, the most complete):
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nplayer-plus/id539397400?mt=8

And the free one:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nplayer-lite/id1078835991?mt=8

Apparently this is the only app that can do this.

Even this one:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/documents-by-readdle/id364901807?mt=8

(Which is very good) is incapable of that.

Just to close the loop, yes, that is the adapter. Also, you do need an ipad/iphone with the internal hardware for usb 3 vs usb 2 (off the top of my head, iPad Pro models, iPhone 7,8, & X). My iPad Air 2 still only connects at 100 MPS due to the usb 2 internal hardware limitation.

Oh, and any program will work with the Ethernet adapter, as long as you leave the wifi/Bluetooth on rather than off in airplane mode. Any data is routed via Ethernet anyway, so turning them off is unnessary, and has the side effect of fooling lots of apps into refusing to work. (Also, by leaving them on you will still have Continuity features of iOS active, and the ability to automatically fall back to wifi if the Ethernet is disconnected.)

No but thinking of doing it.

Is it worth spending around $50 or $60 on the USB Ethernet adapter and Lightning to USB Camera adapter just for faster file transfers ?

While I have both most of the time I use the Belkin + the old Apple adapter because it's not powered. It bothers me to use the Anker + the USB 3 camera adapter in my bed.

However if I wanted to use for faster file transfers or to do streaming in my own network the Belkin adapter would be useless.

Streamings: usually direct-rips (lossless, 1080p) from Blu-rays, or even DVDs (not the lossy versions from the internet, I mean 4-6 GB files), but I am avoiding that now because my PC needs to be turned on, or another device that I would have to buy (NAS?).

What I can tell is that 12 MB/s is very, very insufficient for both streaming or file transfers, if you do that often (and if more than one person is doing). And even if you do this with small files, with a few GB.

My suggestion if you need to pick just one is the combo Belkin + old Apple adapter, and use wi-fi for gigabit speeds.

If wi-fi is totally out of question then buy the Anker + the new USB 3 camera adapter from Apple.

P.S. Again: this is the 1st combo:

And the 2nd, for gigabit speeds:

Also so you are saying the Anker usb to Ethernet Adapter needs to be plugged in to a power outlet? Confused.

Thanks.

Is this the new...
See my above post where I edited with the direct links from the sites you can visit to buy each combo.

Combo 1 = doesn't need to be powered

Also so you are saying the Anker usb to Ethernet Adapter needs to be plugged in to a power outlet? Confused.
See how the 1st combo works (no gigabit speeds):

vN0OrrD.jpg

It's more practical to use this way, with the Belkin adapter + the old APPLE camera adapter. However you are limited to 12 MB/s in your own network. You don't need a power outlet as you can see in the image.

Now look how the ANKER adapter (gigabit speeds) works:

dNDJ3kg.jpg

1) Anker adapter
+
2) NEW Apple USB 3 Camera adapter
+
3) Power outlet

And as someone said before the ANKER adapter is the only one capable of achieving gigabit speeds. It may not reach sometimes 60 or more MB/s but it will always surpass the 12 MB/s you can get with the 1st combo. 12 MB/s is too slow for upload speeds in your own network.

Note: you will also need:

1) Better ethernet cables (I suggest CAT-6)
2) A router with gigabit ports. I used Archer C8 and TP-Link VR900 (the latter is not only wi-fi, it can also support VDSL2).
3) That your device also support these speeds. My PC and the iPADs I tested can.

P.S. This is a recent test: upload from my PC to the IPP 10.5, using the Anker adapter:

lfJPRIj.png

Once again the UL speeds are better than expected. I tried recently and was getting 30, 40 MB/s, however in this latter attempt I got more than 100 MB/s. Usually my network can get no more than 60 MB/s using wi-fi.

[doublepost=1530459186][/doublepost]One last question.
[doublepost=1530459220][/doublepost]Does the https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter
Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter come with a power cord or am I not understanding/seeing right?
You'll only get the adapters. The cables are not sold with them.

It is called "Lightning to USB Cable" and you can either use the one that came with your iPAD/iPhone or buy another from Apple.

In my case I bought an iPAD Pro 10.5, that came with the 12W power adapter + a short cable.

Since the cable is too short, I also bought these:

- Lightning to USB Cable (2 m)
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD819AM/A/lightning-to-usb-cable-2-m?fnode=85

- Apple 29W USB Type-C Power Adapter
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1128929-REG/apple_mj262ll_a_29w_usb_c_power_adapter.html

(To charge my battery faster).

I suggest using longer cables if you want to opt for the 2nd combo. In the image it can be seen that I connected the 29W power adapter to a BLACK extension cable.

Thanks this is so confusing but I will figure it out! xD
There's nothing complicated, you just need to follow the links posted. Also remember not only to get a gigabit router, CAT-6 cables are required, too. I got them cheap and even paid someone to cut the right size.

BTW I never thought I would be so pleased with my internal upload speeds over this gigabit router (VR900, also used for my VDSL2 broadband, 50 Mbps for DL and 5 Mbps for upload).

I thought I was seeing things because I never achieved more than 60 MB/s using the router Archer C8, and 5 GHz. However with the combo Apple USB-3 camera adapter + Anker adapter I am really getting more than 100 MB/s. This is ridiculously fast, and has surpassed the results I was getting with the wi-fi.

I didn't test the wi-fi from the VR900, yet it seems this device is either superior when compared to the Archer, or the Anker adapter really shines.

This is the manual from the VR900:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Yd9B0LbVTkouJnmXnEuB6xugCOAvve1V

And the Archer C8:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1hRcw7fNLfIOF5143YI6AkGsd2OtZpwWS

Plus the CD that came with the Archer: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8-jEPBkOJr2cDRnM2JUQkRCUEE

Kudos for the user that suggested all of them, they are really good. Apple should be ashamed for releasing such awful adapter for those who want to use ethernet.

It does if you are using the Anker adapter, the one that gives gigabit speeds, since the Apple USB 3 Camera adapter is also connected to your APPLE POWER ADAPTER.

The other combo (Belkin + old Apple adapter) will not charge your battery (because it doesn't need a power adapter to work).

I filed a bug report however I don't think Apple will fix the following issue:

- FaceTime doesn't work AT ALL in ethernet mode, if wi-fi is disabled (with or without AIRPLANE MODE). It's funny that TELEGRAM (a similar app) works to send and receive calls, with ethernet + wi-fi disabled, but FaceTime doesn't. You make a call and it keeps doing forever, with no sound, and your contact doesn't receive anything.

If someone wants to help please file a bug report here: https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/

It will only need your Apple ID. Let's see what they answer about it.

Have you received any more info on this? I have the Anker which works great. But I have experienced the same behavior on iOS12 with iMessage and Facetime. My followup question is if you are connected on Ethernet but then also enable WiFi, how does the iPad decide to prioritize? When I have both connected, iMessage and Facetime do work. Does that mean the iPad is prioritizing WiFi over Ethernet?? Unlike the Mac, there is no way to Set Service Priority that I am aware of.

They didn't reply yet. I recommend that more people use their APPLE IDs to enter bug report and file a report just like I did. There is no explanation why FaceTime doesn't work in ethernet mode only, since TELEGRAM is an app that sends and receives calls, and even with wi-fi turned off (and with ethernet being used) the calls are coming through.

P.S. here's a link to bug report:

Click on VIEW BUG REPORTER, then enter your Apple ID credentials.

With FaceTime it's 100% dead if wi-fi is OFF.

This is indeed a bug from Apple. One they have not bothered to fix since not many users complained about.

When you enable wi-fi you say to FaceTime to start working, because FaceTime completely ignores Ethernet mode.

*****
About using both at the same time I don't know how one is prioritized over the other *, and I noticed that doing a iOS backup to iCloud appear to not work with Ethernet Mode + wi-fi off.

* Is there a way to check this? I can do it here.

I ran tests on a previous iOS versions, when I had significantly slower WiFi speeds and faster wired Ethernet. When the Ethernet adapter was used (WiFi/cell remained on) it showed the faster Ethernet speeds.

This is why I believe it prioritizes Ethernet over WiFi.

Basically, if you want everything to work right, keep the WiFi on, and let iOS prioritize the connection. If you insist on turning off WiFi/airplane mode (although there is no reason to) you will have the issues Perene mentioned above.

Thanks for the insight. That is very interesting that you were getting the ethernet speeds when you tested, yet clearly we now that turning off WiFi prevents use of of FaceTime and iMessage. That would mean (in a non-technical way) that the iPad is smart enough to know when to use the preferred connection automatically.

I have done a backup to iCloud before over Ethernet. It did work and it was super fast! Regarding your bug report to Apple on the Ethernet not working for FaceTime and iMessage, I will submit one as well.

That doesn't make sense at all because on a desktop (albeit a computer) FaceTime and iMessage of course work no problem over ethernet (I know I am comparing macOS vs iOS...but the principal in theory is the same).

In the immortal words of Barry Burton from Resident Evil... :D

ZmUMZGP.jpg

Just TAKE. A. LOOK. AT. THIS!

The setup: iOS 11.4.1, last version, in the iPhone 7 Plus (MN4M2BZ/A)
Using: the combo Anker adapter + USB 3 camera adapter from Apple. So we should get gigabit speeds, right?

You folks remember I said we could only get max 12 MB/s upload speeds inside our network, even with CAT-6 ethernet cables? And up to 100 MB/s if we use the Anker (instead of Belkin and any other adapter)?

Here's the thing:
- This iPhone with this iOS can't get more than double the speed. Which is very, very slow.

Proof:

9z1To3d.png
oi9ov7G.png

The app used is nPlayer Plus.

Now look at the result if I use:

iOS 10.3.2 (I installed a tvOS profile to prevent updates)
iPAD Pro 10.5, 256 GB wifi+cel

T5CKLXo.png

Why this massive difference between the two devices? It can't be the iPhone's fault. My guess is this another proof iOS 11 suck big deal. And this is another reason I will never update my iPAD. I remember doing that in the IPP 9.7 (2016) and noticing these battery issues.

Note: if you are in a Windows/PC use this app to measure upload/download speeds. It's free (there are other good options, however they are paid):
