my question here was that the old hard drive had pins (see pic) that securely mount one side in (also see ifixit directions). the old pins don't fit in the new bracket, and none are provided. maybe the bracket and ssd and so light i don't have to secure the other side.
That's strange. Those pins are a standard screw size for the hard drive. The screw holes on the bracket should be the exact same size. The pins fit my bracket just fine. Unless there is something odd about that particular bracket.

Maybe try again.

I guess that is my answer, so light the positioning pins are not necessary.

Is this where I should stick the sensor?

I still find it odd the pins didn't fit, considering the existing iMac hs bracket attached fine to the other side of that 2.5" to 3.5" adapter.

The pins are a standard size.

Just stick it on the SSD somewhere. (Actually I personally just stuck it on the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, because those drives won't get hot enough to matter.)

none of the old hardware fit the bracket, only the provided hardware. i was going to re-use the T bolts to attach the bracket iMac bracket to the ssd holder, but they were too wide. the pins on the other side also too wide. the ssd/holder is so light compared to the old drive, it is secure on one side and "floats". not like there is any stress on it. have to move on. i'll hold onto the old drive and hardware.

Think I’m done on the deep inside. Time to reattach the LCD.

The new optical temp sensor cable (which is attached to the SSD) should be plugged into the spot on the motherboard where the old HD temp sensor cable was. I can't tell from that pic though.

Damn. :(

If you go naked you won't have anything covering the metal frame, so it would look ugly. Also, any fingerprints are very difficult to get off that screen. But it will work fine.

I think the front glass goes for about $50 US (eBay).

It's not attached to anything so it could just be removed. But no matter.

i don't mind sourcing a new glass panel, but just very disappointed. is that an OE screen for $50, including metal mounting strip?

i will order a screen as soon as the best is found (or suggested). thankfully nothing happened to the LCD. are all screens created equal? matte/gloss/polarized/options?

I don't know where they are mostly from. I've never bought one. I suspect some are from old machines and some are new third party. They should have the metal strip, but best to check before you buy.

In the meantime, is the old one still usable? Or are you gonna just run naked for now?

P.S. I once went to check out a Kijiji sale on a 2009 iMac and when I got there I found out why it was so cheap. Not only was the stand dented, there was no front glass. However, somebody had built a plastic black cover for the edges, so in the pictures it looked like the glass was intact. Up close though all you could see was a black plastic frame, with no glass at all. Impressively done for a DIY solution though.

should i wait to get a screen to proceed with HD set up?
No, everything will run just fine without the glass as it has no electronics.

Just remember to never let anyone touch the screen. :)

Don't overthink this. It's just a pane of glass with a metal piece at the edges.

Retina refers to the LCD's pixel density.

BTW, it's called the front glass.
When you say "screen", that usually refers to the LCD.

Yup. I’ll just order something. Didn’t know if there were different replacement options.

Onto the new HD. Clean slate. First need to load the OS. Then move laptop stuff over (pics, music, docs).

Called apple and they sent two links. One is about ?folder (command r technique), the other about Downloading older OS’s.

Tried command r , nothing happened. Went back to target mode/FireWire. Serial ata device tree lists the crucial hd.

There was no searching sound upon start ups.

Find myself stuck getting OS onto the iMac.

First of all, initialize the iMac's SSD through FireWire target disk mode, with Disk Utility on your MacBook Pro. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE RIGHT DRIVE (Crucial SSD). Format it as APFS (non-encrypted).

Then using the installer on the MacBook Pro, install High Sierra on the iMac's SSD, again through FireWire target disk mode.

Alternatively, you can download SuperDuper! which will allow you to make a direct copy of your MacBook Pro drive to your iMac's SSD, again through FireWire target disk mode.

Or else Google how to make a USB flash drive installer.

"Partition"

Should be a button there. If not then go to Edit --> Partition.

EDIT:

I see that Partition is greyed out. Choose Erase instead. Format as APFS (non-encrypted).
