why would a vegan (or anyone aligned to that cause) want to wear something that looked like an animal product even if it wasn't?
Obviously you don't get it. Let me try...

Does a leather belt or leather shoes look like an animal? Does a sausage or a burger patty look like an animal? *

If vegan people want to wear dress shoes (or need to because of their job, eg if they are part of a slick presentation), they need to have something that looks like what most of our society identify as leather shoes. There is a need for that. If my ethics command that I not wear clothes made from animals, I am glad that vegan leather exists and that it looks identical to "real" leather.

Same with food, all of us grow up with a certain kind of food, that's what we are used to.
What you obviously have trouble to understand is that vegans don't oppose the product, but what it is "made" of.
Why would anyone have to stop eating burgers if they can do that without harming animals?

* They don't.

Apple haven't ditched leather,..read the article again;

"...as part of the continuing partnership between Apple and Hermès, the luxury watch boutique is free to continue selling Apple Watch Series models with bands made of calfskin"

Apple are ALL IN on leather! They are simply soft selling using a partner retailer. Rose coloured glasses?
Apple has removed all leather phone and watch products except for extremely expensive, low volume watch bands. Significantly reducing the number of leather products they sell, and not making any Apple-branded leather products, is not being ALL IN.

I understand for some it’s spare change, but 400 dollars for a band is a waste of money.

I mean just cause you can doesn’t mean you should.

And spare me the “it’s quality leather” I mean even if it was human leather it would still not justify 400$.

Good for Apple to finally ditch leather. It was funny that even some car manufacturers were more sustainable in this matter
The funny thing about the leather cases is that they were never durable. The leather cases I used in the last two years both looked horrible only a few months into use. For a "premium" product they sure didn't act like it.

It concerns me that you think "human leather" would be a selling point.

As far as the cost, someone paying that likely has a ton of disposable income and chooses how to spend it. Not sure why you or anyone is trying to control other people's money.

I agree on that, though if you brought that up people would reply "That's just patina, be patina proud bro".

Double standards.

How is it better to kill a juvenile cow instead of a "baby" cow?
How is that less cruel?

Cows can reach an age of 15 - 20 years under natural circumstances, but are killed after 5 years because they are not "productive" anymore. By then they endured a lot of abuse. So one could argue killing a cow soon is the humane thing to do.

Don't get me wrong please, I am against all leather products and against animal abuse.
Animal abuse? These animals under our stewardship are not tortured to death; it's typically a gas powered piston right to the skull, instant death.

Regardless if their stance of leather, I'll stick pick up leather bands from other retailers/etsy.

How is leather a bad thing? All alternatives are plastic. Non-environmentally friendly, they don't biodegrade, when they do degrade, they break down into microplastics that invade our live ecosystem and then enter our own bodies. So-called "vegan" leather is terrible in terms of durability and quality. It also doesn't "breathe" so you sweat more and is just generally crummy.

Leather is sustainable, long-lasting, biodegradable and looks a million times better.

Yeah. What a beautiful “patina.” 😂

You should take yourself to a real farm. You have no idea.

There is this Russian tech modding company pimping up iPhones with gold and diamonds.
Would you say that Apple is responsible for the origin of these materials as well?
Does this Russian company also have an authorised APPLE watch face? With your argument, Apple dont make a watch, Foxconn do. It's a bit hypocritical of Apple dictating to their suppliers then!

Under "natural circumstances" they can also get hunted by predators, injure themselves and die a long slow death or starve. Stop trying to pedal the myth that nature is some wonderful cute utopia. About a third of wild deer don't even make it through their first winter.

"Calfskin" leather can be from animals anywhere up to the age of three by which time the animals are mostly fully grown. Most beef cattle are slaughtered around 2 and 3 years old.

Some people might have thought that leather is a renewable natural material, we should make use more of. But thanks to Apple's spin doctors who invited Mother Nature herself, we now know that only horrible people use real leather.

They weren't even properly dyed.

I had a "blue leather" iPhone 12 case. The blue was just paint. It actually flaked off and was a black leather case underneath.

Disgustingly poor quality for something with a premium price.

That's not my argument at all. Apple is responsible for their products, even if they are manufactured by Foxconn or whoever. That's what goes into their carbon footprint.
However, Apple does not design, manufacture, or even sell Hermes watch bands made from leather.
Hermes on the other hand is not a supplier to Apple. They design and make their own products.
Apple should really have no say in what they do and how they feel about carbon neutrality.

Calfskin? Using baby cow leather for a stupid watch just seems cruel. I hope not all leather is calfskin.
As a veggie I'm being absolutely sarcastic here so please take it as a humorous post ;)

"Delicious and baby soft calves are just a by-product of the milk industry, not using them would be a waste"

Then we all should be glad that Apple stopped making them.

Yeah, think again.
Leather is not a natural material, it is the result of a denaturation process that oftentimes involves toxic chemicals.
So producing leather is bad, and raising the "natural material" it is based on (cows) produces considerable amounts of methane.
