People thinking they’ll go “all leather cancelled or nothing;” Hermès makes products that last, they hand make them in smaller batches compared to the mass production of Apple, and they even offer repairs whereas Apple merely “recycles.”

If I were Apple I would’ve stopped offering first party leather options long ago after the switch to lower quality painted leather that can’t last a week without looking scuffed. The Hermès leather is a quality product though with a smaller lifetime ecological impact. They do it right, whereas Apple doesn’t, and people won’t stop buying leather anyway so why not continue to offer the best?

To my knowledge, Toms was the only brand besides Hermes to ever use MfW lugs. The fact that Apple made 40/44 and now 41/45mm versions essentially just for Hermes also speaks to their partnership. Apple has never sold a first party band that uses 44/45mm lugs so those are made just for Hermes.

Also what were the Swiss lugs? Weren’t those just MfW lugs with different etching?
My one “little birdie” knowledge is that the “Chinese” leather bands Apple sold/sells had fancier lugs from Brasport in Switzerland. I mean the MfW ones are nice too

You might be imputing too much logic and rationality to the marketing push to ban cowhide. The message needs to be simple—no animal byproducts…no cow farts or cow diets that Cupertino is responsible for.

@Vangeli i humble myself before you, silicone dead too!? As you predicted in this thread if I recall correctly

The sustainability perspective wasn’t my first thought, just that their silicone cases fall apart so easily now and everyone hates them, and the FineWoven leak had ten colors which is pretty much the amount of silicon and leather cases combined that we usually get so the math checked out

But yeah they’re essentially landfill fodder so it makes sense to consolidate regardless

I was def into the idea of one material to rule them all. Just not one higher price point. *bows*

This Tuesday is gonna be the quietest hardware event ever and the event horizon for us softgoods sickos

Also I randomly wondered if finewoven would replace braided solo loop…BSL do use silicone!

The only difference I see this year with Apple is offering ALL of the Hermès bands at a massive discount. They've sold the deployment buckle and Noir band for a while now and getting rid of those two styles of bands at such a steep discount is a little worrying. They could have just pulled them and kept them for the Series 9 seeing how its going to essentially be the same watch with a different processor. Getting rid of those two styles of bands (especially the Noir) makes me think the worst.

I'll go on record and say that I won't be shocked if Apple releases the Series 9 but makes no mention of Hermès and that it just quietly goes away. I really hope that's not the case but I have a feeling we could have seen the last of that partnership, which is a shame.

Yeah as others have said, normally what is going on is normal in the Hermes world.

The red flag for me is selling off all the bands at 90% off to employees. An amber flag is the Nike faces in the beta.

I hope I am wrong.

Some more confusing clarification from The Gurm and 9to5’s translation of what I assume is a paywalled Bloomberg piece:

The Apple Watch disappeared from the Hermès website. This happened last year too and it turned out that the Watch lived furthermore. I don't need Hermès, but I own one because of Space black. Apple could offer the iPhone in silver, grey and black. Perhaps they'll do the same with the Watch.

The only possible scenario here is that Hermès will continue to sell the watch through their website. There is no way Apple would get rid of all of their leather bands at such a massive discount with any plans to continue selling the Hermès brand.

I will go out on a limb here and say that all this 'partnership is ending' talk is bs. It's based on Gurmans misunderstanding of the situation (like many times before) or a misinterpretation of what he said. He often states some kind of facts (like silicone bands/cases are discontinued) and then people will read all kinds of stuff into it. Or he gets the correct info but does not understand what Apple is doing and why.

The partnership will continue and we will see a Series 9 with new leather bands and maybe a high end variant of whatever new material Apple is using.

The current hysteria is all because of Gurman posting that Hermès has removed all the Apple Watches from their website. But he failed to point out this happens every single year.

I think (and hope) that the partnership continues. It would be a muted release with little (or no) mention during the keynote and when the online store reopens, we would see the S9 with a few new Hermès leather (or high end replacement) bands 🙏🙏

What do you mean with the Nike faces on the beta?
Are the Nike faces going to be release on the Hermes watch too ?

They look lovely!

No confirmation of Find My integration and wish it had a slot on the back to push cards out easier.

Also, definitely won’t fit a 12/13 Mini.

*card. Not cards.

It only fits one card 💀 and let be honest, if it doesn’t say FindMy support, it probably doesn’t have it.

So 500 USD to carry around 1 card and no FindMy in the event it gets knocked off and now you’re out 500.

I was really wanting this but Hermes put zero effort into this.

They also sell a couple of $5-10,000 carry ons, but let's be honest, you're not spending that on your actual luggage.

It's a statement piece more than anything. They expect you to still carry a wallet. (An Hermes wallet, probably.)

Wait, it only fits one card 💀... eh... pretty useless then

Edit: Does it explicitly say it could only fit one card? I can't find that info on the website.

Edit 2: Oh the English version of the website says "One credit card slot at the front." But I hope that's just a bad translation as in French it could be either translated as "A credit card slot" or "One credit card slot". I hope they just messed the translation up.
