LOS ANGELES BABY!!
Try not to hate me, but I’ve decided to sell my AWH and bands in favour of buying an Ultra. Ultra has been ordered: Amazon will give me till the end of January to change my mind.

I have the AWH8, black leather deployment and orange Kilim.

My question is whether anyone can advise on selling strategy.

First off: do I sell each item separately (so watch with no strap). Do I bundle the watch with one strap (which?) and sell the other separately?

Next: timing. Is the period between Christmas and New Year a good time to sell? Or should I wait till maybe the end of January after payday?

Finally: where? EBay? Vinted? Here? (I know there’s a specific forum for this.) I’m a UK seller.

Are second-hand AWH and bands getting good prices? With the leather ones being no longer sold by Apple, is there a healthy market in second-hand ones? I have all the original boxes (and ribbon!). Does that add to the value?

I may keep the orange sports strap that comes with the AWH. (Or should that be bundled with the watch, with the other two straps sold separately?)
If you’re gonna do this, you need to do this before December 21. If you’re in the United States I just read on Mac Rumours and AppleInsider that Apple is halting all sales of Apple Watch nine as of December 21 in the United States not sure where you’re located.

I would say they should sell after 12/21. There could become a need for used watches and prices maybe could go up.

ITC can’t block sales of personal property on eBay.

Also, while the S8 uses the same patent infringing blood oxygen system, it doesn’t seem to be part of the focus. Apple still sells refurbished S8 and they said nothing about those going away.

Idk. My 2cents

Yeah do not sell before Dec 21 I would say. And noir leather isn’t gonna have a healthy resale value. Assuming it has a visible crease and enlarged hole?

Orange Kilim might be a little better because there haven’t been too many eBay listings and certainly not for anything too far below retail.

I was referring to the poster wanting to buy an ultra Apple Watch and not them selling their Apple Watch.

just like I thought, the next Apple Watch more than likely won’t fit the bands we currently have (according to sources who have a history of being right)

I’m torn between selling them all now or getting a series 9 next year and holding that for 2 ish years lol

I know it makes sense that Apple would do this on the tenth anniversary, but I still have my doubts. The Apple Watch Ultra, with its $800 price tag (and the cheapest Ultra-specific bands at $100 each) is less than 15 months old. I know a ton of people who bought the Ultra, and for many of them, it's their first Apple Watch and they're starting to build their own band collections.

I think if the Ultra hadn't been released, then I'd be 99% confident of this rumor being true.

That being said, I deliberately decided to buy the Hermès Series 9 as a just-in-case scenario. If this does happen, the S9 will carry my bands for at least a few more years, maybe longer.

I don‘t buy it, either. They‘re not going to change the Ultra band attachment after only 2-3 years, i.e. with the first re-design. They could split the lines, so Series Watches with the new system, Ultra Watches with the old system, but that sounds like a mess as well.

That source has had some scoops but they’re not always right. This has been a rumor for years and always gets regurgitated for every new watch. The last major “Watch Pro” redesign that was supposed to change the bands turned out to be the Ultra. Before that it was a flat edged watch, and before that a circular watch, and so on. We’ll see.

I’m betting there will be a new mechanism with magnets that will allow the watch to better utilize all of the wasted space in the current design, while using the same simple and elegant connector for the band. Would allow the rumor to be only partially true, as they often tend to be exaggerated for clicks.

Hoping so. I do have a lot of Hermes bands I dont wear though so might be worth it to sell now just in case. Apple can be pretty unpredictable. I dont buy that they wont change it bc of ppls band collections. I am sure 99% of owners have 1-2 bands lol

Yes the MacBook, iMac, iPhone, iPad, Studio Display have no Jony Ive influence and the remaining design team are totally not disciples of Jony Ive and Apple’s current design principles have made a complete departure from Jony’s.

Seriously though, I think there’s a chance Apple can shift strategy and just “let people wear the bands from the season the watch is from and forward,” though I still don’t see what they’re gaining from breaking compatibility.

Apple Watch was Kevin Lynch's darling since the beginning until he moved to the 'Apple Car' two years ago, and Watch design is still led by COO Jeff Williams. It's not like the house left Apple Park.

With Apple, I find it is often helpful to see what they did in their other product lines to discover what might lay ahead with the Apple Watch. So with iPhone X, they introduced FaceID to govern how you "unlock, authenticate, and pay." Gone was TouchID, which was clearly a fan favorite. So what Apple did with the iPhone is leave in place a few models that had TouchID while developing the overall line with FaceID. There were two separate iPhone SE editions, and only now, six years past the introduction of iPhone X, does the prospect of TouchID look like it is on the chopping block.

So if we look to the prospect of Watch X, perhaps it's an "And" situation instead of an "Or" situation. That is, perhaps we get Watch X with a new connector that redefines what the product does (Blood Pressure or Sleep Apnea) in ways that are inconceivable with the traditional band connector. Just like FaceID enabled the explosion of ApplePay, perhaps that new Watch X connector will be the foundation of bands that are structured on medical function and not color and aesthetics. But there might still be/will be a Watch Classic that retains the traditional connector that lacks the advanced medical function (think the current SE) but allows the collection of band users to continue to maintain their use. At least for a while...

If they truly are nearing the possibility of blood sugar monitoring in future generations of Apple Watch, and that functionality depends on the band, they are not going to hinder the development of that capability by privileging the legacy connector.

As for the Hermes line, perhaps Apple continues a Hermes edition alongside a new "Classic" edition. Hermes is the only Ives "Edition" still selling, and it serves both Apple and Hermes quite well if band availability is any indication. My guess would be that both companies would look at the new band functionality to see the trajectory of the legacy connector based on demand.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they have an “anniversary” Edition (eg, an Apple Watch X) that features this new system and design and is accompanied by some straps, but I don’t think they will do a complete 180 and stop production of the traditional straps and watches at least for another cycle or two or more.

After years of admiring everyone's pics on the site, I finally feel like a legitimate member of the forum, lol. Loving my new SS9 with the orange Kilim band. I can already feel that acquiring bands will quickly become my new obsession. Next on my list is the Toile band in gold/ecru and an Attelage in fauve barenia, if I can find one...

The Upside Down
Apple Watch was Kevin Lynch's darling since the beginning until he moved to the 'Apple Car' two years ago, and Watch design is still led by COO Jeff Williams. It's not like the house left Apple Park.
The Apple Watch was largely Jony Ive's brainchild, which he conceptualized shortly after Steve Jobs's death. Kevin Lynch was only brought in after the project had started to oversee the Apple Watch's development, though mostly on the software side. The hardware design was still led by Jony's team, with the UI design spearheaded by Alan Dye's team.

Tim Cook and Jeff Williams seemed to show little interest in the design of the Apple Watch or design in general, which is a major criticism from the design team regarding the post-Jobs leadership and led to Ive's departure. The focus within Apple Park may not have completely shifted, but it's now more driven by Operations, prioritizing the bottom line than by Design.

If Operations concludes that a redesigned chassis could boost profits, I'm sure they're likely to favor that over maintaining compatibility with legacy watch bands. Plus, most of the original designers who worked with Ive on the watch have left Apple, so there's not much pushback on changes like these.

“We’ve finally done it! A carbon neutral Watch!”

*one year layer*

“Throw out all of your previous bands!”

If it does happen, I wonder if Hermès would offer services for upgrading lugs on their bands as I’m sure the bands themselves won’t change.

I think most true Hermes customers just throw away their last seasons bands.
