After years of admiring everyone's pics on the site, I finally feel like a legitimate member of the forum, lol. Loving my new SS9 with the orange Kilim band. I can already feel that acquiring bands will quickly become my new obsession. Next on my list is the Toile band in gold/ecru and an Attelage in fauve barenia, if I can find one...

Be careful. Our collective obsession of acquiring Hermès bands in these parts is more expensive than buying drugs.

I wonder if we’ll have a year of old+new side by side. Apple sold the S3 for longer than the S4. I wonder if the S9, Ultra 2, and SE2 will continue to be sold for 12-24 months, alongside a new “Watch X” with a new connector. Unless they can provide a suitable adaptor of course - in which case the problem is arguably solved.

LOS ANGELES BABY!!
I consider the band drama to be in the same boat as “Apple is discontinuing the Hermes Apple Watch” that gets batted around every year around release time. I personally don’t see what they would gain in changing the band compatibility especially since with the move from 42mm to 44mm to 45mm and to the Ultra 49mm the bands are all compatible. So I feel it’s a big hard no on bands being changed.

It’s definitely happening. Too much sourcing. I don’t think the battery thing even needs to be too much the rationale. Apple would do it just to get rid of the unsightly band channel and use a cleaner mechanism like magnets over springs.

It didn’t happen a lot but new bands would have busted springs and be unusable. And springs just feel very janky compared to a nice magnet.

Imagine this but by a serious mfg:

I’d also put my money on this being a planted leak by Apple to soften the blow of the news.

I know the sources got the flat Apple Watch wrong but that was both a seeming deliberate psy-op by Apple and I would say this news is more “how it works” stuff which is more reliable Gurman info than leakers getting their eyes on a new watch aesthetics which still hasn’t happened?

Do any men use a 40mm or 41mm watch?

My wrist is about 170mm around, which puts me right in the middle of both sizes. I’ve had a 42mm S0, 44mm S4, and currently have a 45mm S7.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like the watch is a bit too large and I’m somewhat wanting to sell the 45mm to get a 41mm for a more classic watch look.

I wear a 41mm watch. I am not sure what my wrist size is exactly but I know that it is smaller than average for men and the 41mm size is perfect for me. I wear size 3 solo loops.

The Ultra looks comically large on my wrist!

The man himself! Any chance you have a pic handy of a 41mm Hemes or stainless steel watch on your wrist?

Edit: also curious to know which hole you end up using on a sport band if you don’t mind answering
I’m a size 7. I think you’re a size 8? It’ll look fairly small but I’ve always felt the smaller one is a watch, the larger one is more a toy/computer. Def a toss up at your size if I’m imagining it right.

I think I use the second largest hole option on 41mm. For a 45mm s/m sport band I wear it on the second-largest option but the third-largest if I’m working out, which is size 7.

Thank you very much!

Yes, size 8 for me. I think if I were any bigger at the wrist, I’d definitely stick with 45mm.

I took this pic at work earlier while pondering a downsize.

I have to admit I find the wider leather of the larger hermes bands so much more satisfying than the smaller. You have less arm hair to constantly move off a band but not none!
I’m naturally hairy AF. I just started weed whacking once a week again recently. Normally I’d have to brush it to the side for a photo 😂

I love the leather bands as well, but I use my watch for at least one workout per day. Because I that, I have the orange sport band on more often than not. Those are the same thickness between sizes, right?

No the 41mm sport bands are thinner—I think

I also wear a 41mm watch. Size 1 braided solo loop checking in. 🫡

“We’ve finally done it! A carbon neutral Watch!”

*one year layer*

“Throw out all of your previous bands!”

To be fair, the average time folks hold on to their Watches is certainly way longer than one year.

I kinda agree with both of these takes, but not completely.

The „more space for battery“ point seems very weak to me as Apple usually very early on defines a viable battery life target for a product and sticks to it, investing juice gains from processor shrinking etc. in additional tech/functions. The stated (and real life) battery life of the Watch hasn‘t changed since day one of the S0 and I don‘t think an additional 3-4 hours would make any difference in real life. And if you really need more juice, there is the Ultra now.

The „nicer mechanics“ point is also not very convincing IMO. If Apple deemed the current band channel ugly/complicated, they wouldn‘t have designed the Watch like this in the first place. And I really don‘t think the spring system failed a lot IRL (like you already said).

OTOH, there is a reasonable amount of „smoke“ to all this, so there might be a fire. The only reason I see why Apple would actually do this would be if the bands get „smarter“ and basically become sensors that communicate with the Watch itself, thus enabling new (probably health-related) features.

None of the arguments really appeal, I agree. But if you just accept the premise that “getting rid of the weird holes in the top and bottom of the case” is happening it all does seem like enough to fill Apple’s own bucket’o’progress and aspirational clean ID.

“It’s a modern refinement to our interchangeable band system and we think you’re going to love it, and there’s plenty of brand new bands to choose from, starting September 20th”

It‘s certainly possible that this is what‘ll happen, but I for one would be disappointed if that was all it was. I have high hopes that this „first real re-design“ will start to make use of all those „smart strap“ patents Apple has been collecting over the years.

I feel like Tim isn’t leaving to run his NGO until he can nail health features…I think you’re spot on.

The Apple Watch X, 11, 12, 19 will be the “how did we ever feel safe not wearing one” while the Series will be a quaint memory of a more Happy Meal-style era for wearables.

Yeah, this. He probably won‘t be CEO anymore when (if) spatial computing really takes off, so the Watch-as-a-life-saver is supposed to be his legacy. And a damn fine one if you ask me.

(I get that some people find Jon Prosser insufferable (I‘m not one of them), but this video is a complete bullseye.)

Changing the subject a bit, I need some more eyes to double check that this band is genuine. Scored an Encre/Béton double tour for a very good price on eBay as a Christmas gift for my mom. It arrived this morning and I think it looks genuine. But I have never owned a double your (or even seen one in person before today) and know there are plenty of high quality fakes floating around eBay. So I want a second opinion!

Signs it’s genuine:
  • Appears to be OEM lugs with laser etching and pentalobe screws
  • Color matched stitching on the underside matches the color of the leather in each section
  • Appears to be OEM Apple plastic packaging around the buckle
  • Correct embossing on the underside of the long piece. I can’t see the year marking on the short piece or the stainless steel marking on the underside of the buckle without fully opening the band though.
Am I missing anything?

In case Apple change the lug design, I think they'll sell the lugs and the tool so that you guys can replace yours with the new ones.
