My question is if anyone who had done the efi firmware hack on a 09 pro has had any problems after upgrading to the developer version of 10.7. And come to think of it, if the trim enabler hack is also still working with lion.

Dang you, phillipma1957! I thought I was done with mac spending for a while!

sorry!,

but if you have a sp 2009 like a quad 2.66 it has to be very tempting to do this upgrade

Yes, it is. Any idea about 10.7 wreaking havoc on either the EFI or Trim firmware hacks?

No one has posted having that problem. Also no emails no pms and nothing on google. just make a few 10.6.7 copies in case of a problem. use superduper or ccc. same thing if and when you switch to lion

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and try a 2x5690 upgrade on my base 2.4ghz 8 core 2010 Mac Pro. Will let you guys know how it goes.

The $3k retail price tag of 2x5690s is slightly alleviated by the fact that I get a 50% discounts on Intel products =P

Received the replacement CPU from Amazon and finished the install about an hour ago. Temperatures seems good 32C on idle, but will give it a whirl and hope that this one will be okay.

As an aside I have been told by 10.7.x users that the 3.2 hex does work without problems. Still if you are a 3.2 hex or a 3.46 hex modder keep copies of 10.6.x just in case of a problem when you switch to 10.7.x

Bumping this thread because I just purchased a sealed-boxed W3680 (3.3GHz Hex) for $795. Will change out my 3.2Ghz Quad and post results by next weekend.

Blow me, if the W3680 is $615 now, a refurb 2010 for $2119 will get you hexa-goodness for $2734, whereas Apple will have you pay $3699 for a new one.

Damn, saliva in my keyboard.

Finished the install/checkout of the W3680. Probably took 30 minutes including blowing out the dust bunnies.

No difference in idle temp (~29C) from the 3.2 Quad it replaced: The Hex processor is running +4 degrees from ambient. Running cinebench 10x times ran the Hex temp to +35 degrees from ambient (~56 degrees C). Cinebench 11.5 now reports 8.96 compared to 1.47 for my 09 2.66GHz MBP.. Looks like a next gen MBP (early 13) might be in order. :)

xbench 32 (32 bit) indicates 45% higher # than the 3.2GHz CPU that the Hex replaced.

All in all a nice improvement for relatively low bucks (compared to the original cost of computer). This should put a few more years of service-life into this computer. Thanks to the OP for getting this thread started.

cheers

Would you recommend this upgrade to someone that wants to save a few bucks, but has never built a computer before, and only real experience with "working with computers" is opening up a macbook and replacing thermal paste on the heatsink once or twice...also are we sure 10.6.8 is stable with the 3.2 hex upgrade?

The processor replacement is fairly easy and certainly a LOT easier than replacing the thermal paste on a MBP processor.

No problem with 10.6.8 and my upgraded 3.3 Hex.

Well to be accurate, I replaced the thermal paste on the heatsink of a white 2007 macbook c2duo 2.16, not on a MBP processor...basically using most of this guide, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-MacBook-Core-Duo-Heat-Sink/292/1

Does it still sound like I have enough "chops" to pull this upgrade off or is the upgrade here still easier than what I did or close?

If you can take apart any MacBook/Pro to replace the thermal paste, then taking out the CPU sled and replace the Mac Pro should be child's play. Just make sure to take your time and have the right tools, 30 minute job and thats with cleaning the old CPU and applying paste to the new W3670/3680.

But an update, the replacement CPU from Amazon has been flawless. Running like a champ 24/7 for the past 2 weeks.

the mac pro 2010 quad to hex is easier then your link. just don't handle the cpu like i did with a piece of cotton. the pins are like mini hooks so when you lift the cpu up don't use any thing that would snag the pins. other then that it is easy. under an hour no problem in truth under 35 mins is doable.

By getting the recently reduced 3.33 processor and swapping it in a 2.8 quad, will the 2.8 quad be identical hardware-wise to buying a new 3.33 hex from apple? I'm not too familiar with the details, but will components such as logic board, firmware, efi (not sure what exactly this is, but sounds important), and finally the processors (after the swap) be identical between the two machines? Is it possible to purchase the exact same 3.33 processor for this upgrade that apple uses in its own hex? Just wondering if software/firmware? updates could potentially cause problems if the hardware is a little different than what those updates expect.

Yes, Apple uses the W3680 chip. Everything else will be identical.

Seriously, who would buy a hex straight up from apple right now if one can do this quick mod of the 2.8 and have identical hardware for hundreds less...

In general, what's apple's stance on users upgrading processors on mac pro's over time? Is there any official word? I'm guessing it's designed for easy access for processor replacements?

you break you pay is always true on any replacement of any mac part. you don't break it is cool is true on many mac parts. As for cpu upgrades they vary. some cpus are taped with seals that read removal of this seal causes warranty void. not the case with the 2010 quad. the 2009 and 2010 mac mini can't be removed without voiding warranty. 2009 mac pro dual cpu has a lidless cpu much harder to change out it would be very easy to break. there is a thread of a 2009 dual cpu upgrade going bad on anandtech.com . if you really look at this thread you will find the link.

right now there are more then 60 of us that did the 3.2 hex and i am sure a lot are going to do a 3.33 hex. So far 1 person got a dud hex 3.2 cpu and amazon replaced it. so far these upgrades are pretty much flawless with 10.6.7 10.6.8 and a few have pm's reporting lion works. this is a nice upgrade for a good price a rarity for apple products.

personally this is easy to do then a hdd plus ram upgrade in a 2006 to 2009 mac mini. I modded about a hundred of them and broke 3 parts total. (old eyes I am in my 50's)

What price will the 3.33 hex chip most likely drop to within the next 12 months?
