I'm gonna be really curious to see what you think coming from the 12.9. I upgraded from 12.9 to the new 12.9, and am really happy with the decision, but still questioning myself sometimes as to whether or not I should go smaller strictly for the portability factor. I just don't know if I could give up my screen at this point. I'm planning to head to the Apple Store Monday or Tuesday to check out the 10.5 and see what I think while I'm still in the return window with AT&T.

Honestly, I had this same struggle when I bought my 12.9 (9.7 pros had just been released), and ultimately decided to go big or go home. I LOVE the 12.9, but I know I'd like something a little lighter and easier to haul around as well. I'd consider just doing a 2017 iPad for hauling around, but I know that would be really tough to use out and about when I have this amazingly smooth pad at home. First world probs...

You play games and watch lots of videos? Stick with the 12.9, I tried the 10.5 coming from the 12.9 and loved the size and the way it was easy to handle BUT if what I mentioned is what you do lots of on your iPad then just stay with the big one. I am not keeping the 10.5

Do any of you let the battery die down? Mine's down to 33% at the moment. Is it better to let it drop to 20 or 10 before charging?

Some will say letting it get down to 20% or so before recharging is good. Others will say it’s unhealthy. At this point in the lithium-ion game I think you’re safe as long as you don’t let it bottom out to “0%” often. I only charge mine overnight and that’s if I put it down with less than 70%. Anything over that typically carries me through another full day (not counting iOS 11).

Love it.

Stepping up from my iPad 4 it is lighter and better in every way. I got the keyboard cover and the pencil, was most impressed/surprised by the keyboard to be honest. I was accurate and comfortable using it within 5 minutes or so and totally did not expect that to be the case.

Hi, I'm curious if anyone has actually traveled with the 10.5 yet? Too heavy? Too big? I will be traveling soon but don't know if it will be heavy or not. It will be in my "purse" backpack the whole time. I will put the lightest case on which is probably the Apple smart keyboard.

I traveled with it recently. Long trip overseas and four legs. It's not an issue traveling with it, no difference than the 9.7 Pro. Probably depends on your previous model though. No issues with it on the tray table either, don't have to reposition it. Was happy with it traveling.

Its footprint is definitely more pronounced than the 9.7 (obviously). For that reason I’m not exactly smitten with holding it for extended periods of time when I’m laying down. Still better than holding the 12.9 but this is teetering on the edge of needing the Smart Cover or keyboard in order to prop up (for me).

I could feel the 33g increase in weight at the Apple Store holding it in standing position too.

I am concerned if it would be much heavier than the Pro 9.7" for the position you've mentioned: holding it while laying down.

In landscape it’s more manageable. I have medium/large hands so it’s not a horrible stretch across the screen. In portrait mode, it’s kind of annoying. It has a slight top-heavy feel to it like the 12.9 did when I had it.

I'm due to take "it" on "it's" first trip tomorrow so will see how I get on then but I'm not anticipating any problems. It's only a short trip. Back Monday evening. Will report back.

coming from an ipad mini 3, it seems a lot bigger, and looks much better than the clunky ipad 3 I had before that. Just need my CRM developer to get working on Chrome for Ipad at this resolution and I could finally leave the macbook at home. I also noticed that chrome doesnt look nearly as sharp (im assuming its scaling resolution from another ipad size until its updated)

I've got the Mini 3 also and would love to have an idea of the size difference , could you please take a picture of your Mini on top of your new iPad ? TIA

I was actually out of town when I bought my 10.5" Pro. Got it at BB with a universal sleeve. Carried it around all week in that. Most of the time it was in my backpack. No weight issues at all. Hardly even noticeable.

Then when I got back to the city yesterday (Saturday) I bought the leather Smart Cover in Saddle Brown. The leather cover seems a little thicker than my usual smart covers but still, the weight is not an issue.

As for the footprint, it is as you know a little bigger than the 9.7 and much bigger than the mini. In a backpack I don't see it being a problem but a purse.... idk.... I doubt it's fitting in a purse...

Right now I've been using the Smart Cover and the sleeve for added protection. I want to protect the back of the tablet too... still the weight is not an issue.

Decided to return my 10.5 pro to Apple and buy another from John Lewis (in the U.K.) as they provide a 3 year guarantee. Do you think I'm wrong to do this? I'm just using Apple with their own 14 no questions asked return policy. 3 year guarantee is pretty good, right?

Smart Keyboard adds bulk, no doubting that. You need it for the trip maybe to type but it does not cover back. Go with Smart Cover only if weight is a hot button for you.

Three years seems like a very extensive warranty. My question would be, what specifically does the warranty cover over a three year period. I don't know anything about John Lewis, but if you feel they are trust worthy for your investment and the terms for under the warranty, then that's all that matters.

They are a very reputable company over here and have been so for "ever" They were founded in 1864 and I've bought from them for many years. I've no doubt whatsoever in dealing from them. They too, have the no questions asked return policy that Apple do. It's just the hassle of return and rebuy but I guess I'll have that pressure of opening a brand new iPad again!

Why didn't you buy from them in the first place?

The only problem with my 10.5 is the price. The hardware is awesome, more than I expected. IOS is still IOS, and that's a disappointment. I know IOS11 is imminent, but I fear that it, too, will be just IOS, although tweaked some and offering some new functions. The form factor is terrific. Overall, it's a giant leap from my iPad3.

But, is it worth almost $700? Sure, many folks have paid lots more than that for theirs. To me, though, that is a heck of a lot of money for a device that will only complement and not replace my rMBP. I don't know yet. I am very close to returning it. And I am very close to keeping it, too. I really like it, but the question is, do I like it 700 bucks worth? Dunno.

Absolutely love it so far. The differences between the 9.7 and the 10.5 are subtle, but this is the first iPad I've owned that feels like a genuine contender to my MacBook Pro and that's saying a lot. Since my 10.5 arrived last Tuesday, I've barely touched my MacBook. iOS 11 will be the icing on the cake.

I am in love with it. Not a fan of the case I'm using but it will do until my Supcase rugged one arrives in a couple of weeks. I upgraded from the pro 9.7. loved it but only got the 32gb model and was running out of storage. Another reason is the amazing deal I got. 256gb cellular version for $720 :) score!

Selling my MacBook and fully switching to the new 10.5. no regrets yet :)

Where'd you score that deal?

Got rid of my Mini 4 at Christmas and sold the 12.9 the day before I got the 10.5. I bought a cheap cover from amazon.co.uk which is thin and protects the iPad Pro and makes it almost like a book. My iPad 12.9 usage had gone down after getting my new MacBook Pro before Christmas but I am back to using the 10.5 daily now. Its super fast and Im loving iOS 11 on it. Im not finding the loss of size to be much of an issue apart from reading comic books.
