I have no clue why a 9,7" "Pro" should be included in the product lineup, except for the increased pricing and the points about the supply chain I already stated.

How about folks like me who honestly felt that the 12.9" was great, except for the 12.9" screen. I had mine about a week before it went back, and I've been chomping at the bit for a 9.7" version of it. Getting that is a win for users in my boat.

It's not if you consider real multitasking with iOS 10.
The split screen function that is available today was just the beginning.
It has to be different, I promise it'll happen.

I'm curious what you are thinking of that would actually cause multitasking to take more RAM than it already does, and why iOS would not continue to manage it as it has. Are you thinking arbitrary window size like Android N? I'd be betting that Apple wouldn't be looking at a feature like that in a while. They still have a lot they can do just to make split screen better than it currently is.

All devs will be developing with 4gb RAM in mind so in no time this device will be left behind.

Nope. Not happening. As a developer, we support OS versions, not hardware. So whatever hardware is supported by recent iOS versions, we also need to account for. I'm not going to abandon the vast majority of my user base because of one model that may become two in the next year. We can't even do anything specific for the Air 2 yet, because we are still supporting everything but the iPad 1.

Can I make an accommodation for the larger Pro? Yeah. And we have in our product. But we aren't going to abandon existing devices just because the larger Pro exists. Considering how long the OS support cycle currently is on these things, I'm wondering when we can finally drop support for the actual iPad 3.

I love this

It's very nice but actually more laggy than I thought

Backup or new? And where are you hitting the lag? I'm just curious if I can hit it as well. Honestly, the web page load speed feels better, which I didn't think was even possible compared to the Air 2.

I've decided to set this one up new rather than carry forward a backup that's been around since iOS 4/5, and because I don't actually need the data in the backup when it was all getting synced anyways.

And here I am still using the backup carried forward from my first iPhone (circa 2007). :p

You are trying really hard to downplay the best iPad Apple has ever made.

So sorry.

Some people are talkers others are doers. Unless you count returning product as actually doing anything.

Fear is a powerful force. But inaction has consequences as does real actions.

My bad. I originally quoted the wrong post. Not talking about you Z but the fella you're replying to.

I'm actually curious about all those people saying the next 9.7" iPad will have 4GB and will be released in either Fall 2016 or Spring 2017. Do you guys have insider information or something?

I'm curious too. This may be it for the next 2 years and I would be ok with that.

If I gamed on the iPad more, I'd probably would have used the backup. I think all I lost by setting up new was pre-entered passwords and a Myst save. But for me, its about getting a clean break every so often. I do something similar with new computers. Make a disk image, keep it around for a while as I need it, and then get rid of it maybe a month after transferring what I need over just in case I forget something.

Games, why do so few of you save to iCloud storage?

I set mine up from backup as I always do and it is very fast. No lag at all.

It seems like I can just walk into near by Apple Store and can pick it up if I want it...there are 3 Apple stores in the city I live, they all showing store pick up available today.

Fortunately Tablets and ipads don't generate as much interest as say new iphones . This ipad will be readily available for quite a while after launch . Speaking of which I may actually ditch my elephant sized pro and use its funds to buy a dji phantom now that the 9.7 is now in my house

I don't actually game. However, I have my homescreen organized and apps (mostly comic and ebook readers) set up exactly the way I want them and it's a pain having to do it all over.

I wanted to go see the cover colors, but my store only have a few colors left in stock. They had them this morning. They still have most iPP configurations though.

Yeah it seems like you said!
I saw 9.7" today and I'm girly so I loved their rose gold, however, it's just bit too small to draw on it, my main purpose of usage of 12.9" Pro is digital drawing. And it bit too big to comfortably use on the go, since I already have iPad mini 4 as well and loving that portability.
If they make iPad mini with Apple support and there's rose gold, im gonna buy it without hesitation lol
And hoping next time 12.9" also will have rose gold!

I got my iPad and keyboard today and have the pencil as well. All are working the way they should. It was the easiest setup ever. It took me almost 6 hours to back up my old iPad and less than 20 minutes to download from the cloud to the new iPad. I also had some concerns about switching my cellular from the old iPad to this new one but that was a breeze also - didn't even need to change the SIM card. ATT told me I would have to go to a store and get a new card but that wasn't the case.

I do notice that this new iPad screen is quite a bit warmer when sitting next to my old iPad. However, I'm pretty well used to the difference already.

Only teeny, weeny complaint is that the nib that came on my pencil has a pin hole in the end. I can't imagine that would be good considering it will most likely pick up dirt and might scratch the screen. No biggie - I'll drop by Apple and have them give me a new nib.

Happy camper here so far.

I don't believe he is ... but that's just my opinion.
No need to be sorry for another persons opinion.

I believe he is.

The next refresh will have 4gb of RAM, and this 9.7" will definitely be the new iPad 3!

All devs will be developing with 4gb RAM in mind so in no time this device will be left behind.

Here are my thoughts after receiving mine and playing with it for a couple hours:

Some background: I owned an original iPad and an iPad 3. I probably haven't used my iPad 3 more than 5 hours in the last year, as the hardware limitations coupled with iOS updates have made the lag too annoying for me. Yes, I'm spoiled. I've had the newest iPhones the last couple years, so some of the newer tech (like the print scanner) I'm familiar with.

1) The speakers are awesome. Much louder, much fuller sound, and while it's not meant for it, there is noticeably stronger low tones (bass) than I'm used to in all my iPhones and previous iPads. Very happy that this aspect of the upgrade met my wildest expectations.

2) Multitasking. Wow. So again, I'm coming from an iPad 3 and the newest iPhones, none of which have multitasking the way this does. Like the original iPad itself, it's something I didn't think I'd give 2 sh*ts about, but I was blown away after experiencing it. Being able to watch a video on Plex, and reply to a facebook message or text message without any stoppage in the video is a much more rewarding experience than I thought it could be. 2gb RAM or no, this iPad does things that I would expect other devices (even my computer with 16gb ram) to stutter at.

3) The Apple Pencil. I'm a graphic designer, and am actually selling my Wacom Cintiq 22HD and replacing it with this.
  • The pressure sensitivity is much deeper than I expected, allowing you to go as light as a stroke to where you literally cannot see it, to a full, wide, 100% opacity mark in the same stroke.
  • I do wish there was a bit more feedback (resistance) between the nib and the iPad, as the plastic on glass is a little slicker than ideal. I think it's just something that'll take a few days to get used to.
  • I also wish the pencil itself wasn't as slick/round as it is. The hexagonal shape of a traditional pencil gives you a bit more control, and with no grip on the slippery plastic it's easy for your fingers to move around on it rather than the nib doing exactly what you like. I took a rubber grip off one of my mechanical pencils laying around and put it on it, and it'll be an alright fix for now. After reading up a bit online, I'm going to grab a Papermate Inkjoy pen as it appears those have rubber grips that fit well, and they cover more area than the shorter grip that came from my mechanical pencil.
  • I'm not a fan of the connector cap ("eraser"). The magnet does a good job of keeping it on the pencil, but it shifts/rattles if I touch it with something, and where do you put it when you're charging the pencil? Not awesome utilitarian design--I think I'll check online to see if there's a cap of some sort that stays attached, like the caps on waterbottle straws, you know?
4) The Moku case I bought for it. I'm a leather guy. I love leather. My iPad 3 has a black leather Apple smart cover, and a black Zagg Leatherskin on the back (a leather skin that sticks to the iPad itself), no case. Apple no longer makes leather smart covers, and their smart covers also stick over the edges sloppily if you don't want to use an actual case, like me. As an aside, Zagg no longer makes leatherskins either, but I was able to buy up a bunch of them some time ago, as they're awesome when cut to fit the backs of kindles and other devices. So, anyway, being that nothing on the market currently fits what I want (leather smart cover that fits well w/out a case), I just grabbed what looked like the best cheap case out there currently--this one: http://www.amazon.com/iPad-Pro-9-7-Case-Lightweight/dp/B014KPC0H6 . I received my cover last week, and to be fair to the issues I'm about to mention, I did receive an email out of the blue from the seller yesterday stating the following:

Dear Customer,
Thanks for your recent purchase of "MoKo Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-shell Stand Cover Case with Auto Wake / Sleep for Apple iPad Pro 9.7 Inch 2016 Release Tablet, BLACK" and we are writing to let you know that the case you received may be defective and the smart cover feature may NOT work correctly.

To stand behind our products, we will send an adequate one in about 12 days. This will be a revised version with better fit and of course, the smart cover feature. The volume buttons also line up more accurately and are easier to access.

You may use the current case as a layover and there is no need to send it back.

We apologize for any inconvenience and please feel free to contact us if you have any further concern or questions.

So they recognize there are some issues here and there with their case, so maybe the replacement will correct the following issues:
  • There is no smart functionality with the cover.
  • The case is a bit warped and the iPad wouldn't go in correctly at first. It would pop out in one area after I got all the rest put in. I do have quite a bit of experience with cases for apple products, and this was probably the most ill-fitting I've ever used. I eventually got it to stay, and it's POSSIBLE that it was actually the camera bump that was preventing it from going in smoothly at first, but I don't think so.
  • The cover doesn't lie flat--it's too inflexible to do so, and probably needs to be worn in to work adequately.
  • The case, while having itty bitty holes for all 4 speakers, does not line up right and covers up 3 of the 4 speakers, so that when you're listening to something it's very apparent that 95% of the sound is coming from 1 speaker. The iPad sounded perfect outside of the case, and restricted inside the case. This issue was going on when I knew for sure I had put the case on as fitting as possible (with the camera bump in the right place, for instance). If the replacement retains this issue, this will be a deal breaker.
5) The screen/lowered reflection/true tone. This was a feature that I anticipated as being huge, though I think most people that aren't graphic designers and heavy readers couldn't care less. It has definitely met my high expectations. It's much more natural feeling to use the iPad now. You don't feel like you're Tom Hanks in Joe Vs. the Volcano with fluorescent lights flickering in your face giving you a 'brain cloud'. (+20 points to Gryffindor for each person that understands that reference). Seriously though, when you turn true tone off, the screen is honestly painful to look at now. This will absolutely be a standard feature on all apple devices come fall, I guarantee.

So overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase. If you're on the fence about buying one, maybe some of the information above can help you see some issues where you didn't anticipate any, or assuage some of your concerns you may have had.

Using two apps though drains the batteries faster than standard charger can charge

I've had this issue also (stock charger). It also happens with a 40W Anker charger. Going to give it another couple of days and charges to see if it settles in. If not, this iPad Pro is getting returned.

Sorta pointless to have a device that can't be used as advertised even while plugged in. That's not really my idea of an iPad.... I'd go with a Wacom Cintiq if it's gotta be tethered to a desk.

edit: Also, set this up as a new iPad first.... Had more issues than should have so did a fresh restore to 9.3.1 and the battery issues continued.

It has finally reached a full charge, so I'll see how it does.

Backup or new? And where are you hitting the lag? I'm just curious if I can hit it as well. Honestly, the web page load speed feels better, which I didn't think was even possible compared to the Air 2.

I've decided to set this one up new rather than carry forward a backup that's been around since iOS 4/5, and because I don't actually need the data in the backup when it was all getting synced anyways.

fresh install no backup. Mostly animations that aren't buttery smooth. A few times launching apps will be a bit jittery. Usually when it involves motion + gaussian blur I don't get my 60 fps. A good example is when you tap on the address bar in safari and the speedbar animates in.

Of course I am picking on small details, but I hope it's not a sign against the lack of RAM.

I was actually going to make a thread "I love my 9.7" iPad Pro" because I am extremely pleased with it. Moreso than I thought.

Here's what's impressed me in my initial use that I did't really expect:
  • Noticeably faster performance than my Air 2. I loved the Air 2 and never thought of it as slow and expected the A9X to yield no real world benefit in day to day use. I think a combination of that and the NAND flash improvements are huge. Apps install faster, many app launches are noticeably faster. The Music app is nearly instant open where as the Air 2 took 2-3 seconds. I set up my iPad as new and launched Sky Guide for the first time by accident when I was putting it's widget in NC and by the time NC swiped up the app was already loaded and waiting . It's noticeable more zippy. Since launching apps is mostly sequential reads as noted by @rui no onna , I suspect the gains are from the A9X.
  • Less reflectivity. I never expected much with the Air 2 and didn't notice much from my iPad 3 because glad was never a huge thing. I've noticed that at certain angles my Pro looks better than the Air 2 depending on the lighting. Not a huge thing, but there.
  • True Tone. I thought this would be gimmicky, but it's extremely subtle and makes a huge difference. There really is a paper-like look (though not perfect). And when I disable it I'm blasted by the harsh blue-white screen. Even in a well lit room with sunlight, there is a ever-so-slight color shift that makes a subtle but appreciated difference to me. It makes the device seem more authentic and less like a computer I'm holding, if that makes sense.
  • Camera performance. I don't use my iPad to take pictures unless it's the camera I'm holding (with my Watch, my phone isn't always on my person). I took a shot today just for kicks and was impressed by the camera far more than I expected. I only own an iPhone 6, so 6S users may not be surprised. It blows the Air 2 away in terms of low light and has an extremely bright flash.
  • Speaker vibration. The vibration is present no doubt, but id doesn't seem as annoying as the iPad Air 2's. For one, it's not concentrated in one place and it doesn't appear to be vibrating the screen quite as badly, but this may just be perception.
  • Faster Touch ID. The Pro is supposed to use the old 1st Gen Touch ID from the Air 2 and iPhone 6, but it is noticeable faster than my Air 2 was and much faster than my iPhone 6 even with new finger prints. My iPhone 6 was never quite this fast even when my fingers are deleted and reregistered. I doubt it has a Gen 2 sensor or that would be advertised, but the A9X may have an effect. I've never used the 12.9" Pro so I can't say if it's the same.

This is why I expected and am still happy with:
  • It does NOT wobble.
  • Speakers are better. Not "glorious" like a good pair of headphones, but great for a thin tablet and louder than my TV!
  • Apple Pencil works as expected.

My only grips are really with the Pencil and it' sonly a minor one. If you turn bluetooth off and then back on, you have to plug your Pencil back in. Not a huge deal, but I only enable BT when I need it. I thought it would be like my keyboard where they would re-pair, but it seems the only way to re-pair the pencil is by plugging it in again. I wish "Space Gray" was darker like the rMB, but that's now really an issue with the device.

So I changed my mind!

Just been on the phone to Apple & let them know that only one iPad will be returned.

I'm keeping one iPad, Silicone Case & Smart Cover.

Being hasty and making decisions too swiftly has always been my biggest downfall.

However, I think I have good reasons: Was burnt with the whole iPad 3 drama. I also received 2 of the larger iPad Pros with dead pixels.

But I think I'm going to really like this iPad.

As a bonus, I received £80 off of the Silicone Case & Smart Cover because of the dead pixels on the larger iPad Pros. Therefore, they only cost me £14!

Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know ...

Sorry to hijack your thread, but since the other one (that you started) is pretty dead and I'm trying to help a few people from the UK...

I found an interesting offer on the apple pencil at argos, if used with or without QUIDCO cashback.
If you use quidco you can get 10% cashback on the pencil, you only have to pay in store.
also, argos has an offer at the moment (online and in store), if you spend over £50 you'll get a £5 voucher, or a £10 voucher, if you spend over £100.
this would make the apple pencil only £66.10 (if you have use for the voucher, of course) not bad at all. might go buy one tomorrow.
Surely it will come in handy for someone.

And now to answer your question, once I do get my ipad (probably not until monday now after yesterdays disaster) I will probably be very happy with it (unless there are dead pixels, dust or chips on it) I used to have an iPad 2, that i sold years ago and didn't replace with anything newer.

Not at all at the moment, but that is due to a dead-on-arrival device (128GB Wifi silver)
Colored lines vertically accross the screen, right at the welcome-screen. I did not activate and use it whatsoever, just called AppleCare and already send the faulty one back.

I guess just bad luck.... So back into the waitingline :(
