I was just wondering how much of a hindrance people are finding it to not have flash on the iPad? I sort of know what flash is (moving thingys right?), but I don't really know what/which kind of websites use it and how common it is, so I don't know if I'd miss it. I browse the internet on my iPhone and the only odd 'holes' I've noticed have been adverts on webpages. Can someone enlighten me a bit, maybe give me an example of flash? (You can tell I don't do the whole technology thing that much....sorry if this seems utterly obvious to everyone else!)

Most banner ads and some streaming websites are made using flash. Most people who miss it cite Hulu.com as an example. However, I don't miss flash much at this point. There is so much content that is playable on the iPad it doesn't matter much.
Flash, In a nut shell, is basically a type of internet code that many websites use that enables things like streaming video, standard video playback, as well as online games "you need to install flash player" is what most sites will say on the Ipad, because as well all know, it is not supported. More of the experts will have other reasons, or know of other applications that use flash, but for standard, average use, flash is mainly used on websites for the reasons above, video, games etc. HTML5 is what Jobs is pushing, in that he claims "Flash is out of date, and very inefficient".
I have been blocking most of it for years and usually just leave a site if it won't load any of what should be ordinary content (informative material) without my allowing Flash. I mean if I want to look up some tech specs on a car or a camera or something, why should that require me to use Flash? Less is sometimes more when it comes to presenting content, to me anyway.
What I do notice lately is that more programmers must indeed be switching away from Flash coding because I see fewer blocks of empty space on the pages I browse.

Thank you for that excellent synapsis. It looks to me like you think Steve Jobs is out of line claiming Flash being out of date and inefficient, but what Steve says is true. Flash is very poorly coded and designed, and really is outdated. Every time I have any problem with my Mac, when Safari quits unexpectedly and stuff like that, it is always because of me visiting a site full of Flash and it ruins everything.
As for Flash's absence on the iPad I am glad about it. It doesn't have the chance to crash my iPad.
Not much. I don't get people wanting flash on your mobile device. It's ridiculously terrible on all Android devices (using flash lite) and only a few have 2.2 and that's also causing issues.
People don't need flash. And LOL, whats funny...i tried to go a flash site on my EVO and it failed terribly.

If someone says that he goes to many sites that use flash, so that the lack of flash on the iPad is an inconvenience, I would not call him a liar. People visit different sites and have different habits.
But as for me, the sites that I visit either do not use flash, or they have made their sites compatible with the iPad. I visited one online store that uses flash pictures and menus, and since I could not use them, I left.
Since there are so many iDevices out there, I believe (and hope!) that site publishers will increasingly make their sites compatible, and this probably means abandoning flash.

I don't miss it a lot, but I do miss it. From time to time things like flash videos pop up and it always annoys me I can't view them. Not a deal breaker, but definitely annoying.

You don't have to be an apple zealot to decide that Flash is not on the same level as the five basic food groups. I'm just about as old as the fricken internet so I think Flash is, like... just superfluous, most of the time. I like text. Loads fast, takes up less bandwidth.
I don't miss it at all, but I use a flash blocker on all my browsers anyway. Less annoying advertising is a big plus.
As an Apple and Linux "zealot" I can tell you unequivocally flash is worthless. The only platform it works "well" on is windows desktop. On every other platform it's "cross platform" benefits fail to deliver.

I disagree, the minority of Flash use is for video sites and games, the majority use is for navigation and basic site structure.
That's why there's the YouTube app, and I find it quite handy that if you click/touch a YouTube video or YouTube link in safari it automatically loads in in the YouTube app
Well a lot of videos that I like to watch in YouTube are apparently in flash and give me the message that I must have Adobe Flash installed in order to watch them.
