But you need to remember that apple doesn't pay those prices they pay much less so reall i'd say it only costs them about 1400 dollars to make the 24" as a guess.

it doesnt matter? no one would acutally build one themself...so this thread is uselss...

Thank you captain obvious... (I guess you are a thick one... The large red text must not have been clear for you...) This thread is solely too see how much the internals of the iMac cost. Some users on here are interested in that... If you are not one of them please see you way out of this thread...

Thanks and have a good day ;)

I'm pretty sure apple could build it for less than that!

Oh Gawd, I do hope you are joking.

I think the point of the OP was to show that when people ask why Apple charges so much they can figure out why. If someone wanted to build this computer based on the specs it would run them $2500+

Um...I think you should. That kinda determines what you will end up paying for it...

You can share that dunce cap with Eric

That was taken completely out of context...

Maybe I should make it simpler for you.... I do not care what about could build it for in this thread.

How does that work for ya?

Honestly after the last thread I am sick of these knuckleheads posting all this BS... It is such a simple thread, but some can't handle it!

Well this is kind of a stupid thread. If you wanted to build a machine for the price of an iMac for windows you would get a much better machine.

No matter what the street price of any item you listed is, the truth is that apple gets it cheaper. Especially the screen which can be bought from dell from 800 dollars, or so, some days.

Don't make threads like this expecting that people won't state the bloody obvious.

Oh and apologise to Eric for being so darned mean!

He he. What kind of a car do you drive? Try putting to gether the price of your car in parts if you want a laugh. Apple's selling price is more than fair, IMHO  That's why I bought one....

Rich

Ya, I just thought some people would like to know that the iMac is actually a good deal, when most feel it is an over-priced computer.

I have no idea how much that monitor could be purchased for by Apple. (Probably pretty cheap or we would not have a 1799 price tag)...

But, Dell does not make a monitor that uses the same panel as the new iMac. They do however sell a NEC monitor that does use that panel for $1300.

Oh...

And Eric I am sorry. I am sure you know I was only kidding, as I hope you were as well.

Now lets put on our happy faces :D

Meh, that is kinda unfair to look at it that way...

A lot of times people build PC's b/c it is cheaper than buying...

For example it is cheaper to build a Gamer PC then spend the money on a Dell XPS, Alienware or Voodoo PC.

You know you are getting ripped off when that is the case...

In this case it is FAR cheaper to buy an iMac than to buy all the parts...

I completely agree with you that Apple's selling price is more than fair... This is what this whole thread is about!

It is overpriced no matter which way you look at it. That NEC screen is over priced too.

You pay the extra for having the nice package. You could build it cheaper otherwise.

So where is this thread going again? The true cost of an Apple machine right....

Not to mention that many people forget that it costs Apple to machine the parts necessary, have some guy or gal put those parts together for you, test those parts for QC, and have it shipped to either the Apple Stores and/or warehouses. Apple pays for the boxes that they are put in, the annoying styrofoam, the printed materials that go inside the boxes and POS marking and tracking that lets them do their inventory.

A lot more goes into making a computer than buying things from Tiger Direct and slapping them together like a high school kid's science project.

The fact that it is a H-IPS monitor might have something to do with it too... haha

We were talking about hardware costs not Styrofoam. Your one of those guys that likes to over complicate things...

I put together a regular desktop computer at newegg which is pretty much equal to the iMac 24" 2.4GHz specwise and it costs about $1100 without the screen. And you say that a dell 24" can be had for $800. So that would make it $100 more expensive than the iMac.

Granted, you could exclude things like camera and speakers and you could add a quad CPU for not much more. But if you compare it to a computer with the same specs, there's not much difference in price.
Also the iMac comes in a much nicer package IMO.

Not to be too pedantic, but the iMac panel is better than the 24" Dell monitor.
