When I first heard the idea of not having a charger in box, then I was, like many others, quite furious. But actually it does make sense a lot.
First of all, Apple is the first to provide a long term fast charging approach that does not change with each new device. When I was previously a Samsung user, then Samsung gave me a 15W brick, using Samsung AFC protocol. When my wife got another Samsung, same era, then they included a 25W USB Power Delivery brick. So changing the standard often is not helpful at all, even if it is an improvement, because hello there compatibility issue.
Then I went for an iPhone. I got a nonsense 5W charger from Apple with my iPhone 11, which I quickly replaced by Apple's 20W charging brick. Why they didn't put 20W charger in the box, I don't know, that part sucked a bit, but when I went for iPhone 12 Pro Max, then I didn't care about the charging brick anymore, because I already had a decent one. Then I bought the MagSafe charger and I absolutely love it. Now I have preordered the iPhone 14 Pro Max and I don't need useless stuff from the box and I don't need to buy new stuff either. So I don't expect anything from 14PM box, that would just sit in the drawer and become eventually just e-waste.
The paradigm change of having more compatible chargers and not including a brick for a device, no matter how much it costs is disruptive and not convenient at all, but in the end of the day, if devices change over years, but you can still retain some pieces of it (the charger), then it contributes a lot less to e-waste eventually. Which is a good thing for the environment.
Btw, actually Apple itself says in the knowledge articles that you can and should choose any charger to your own liking, that supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 or higher. You can buy an Anker, a Samsung or what ever charger that meets the spec. My wife actually uses a single charger from Satechi, which has a lot of USB-C ports and she charges her work laptop, her personal Macbook, her iPhone and her Apple Watch with it.
