please tell me you’re joking? Apple wants to sell me a plug as an accessory for a $1500 device, so I can use that $1500 device?
Why are you acting surprised? It says this when you order the phone. You mean to tell me you got a $1500 Pro phone and don't have any sort of USB charger. Yeah right get with it buddy.

Has anyone pointed out yet that Apple’s stated rationale for not including the charging brick was… totally correct in OP’s case?

He did already have a brick, just like apple said he probably would have.

I don’t underhand how a quick google search wouldn’t have give you the answer, and save the need to post this thread 🤷🏻‍♂️

There’s a white cable in the box but no way to plug it into the mains to charge my new 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max. Is this a mistake and Apple will send me the wall plug if I complain, or do they really think I’m going to charge it using my Dell laptop everyday?

I don’t really wanna carry a 16 inch laptop around to charge my phone.

any advice?

I strongly suspect you have what you need to charge your new phone. Just the size of the box should have told you that you had to use your own charger which you have many. Yes I know this is a joke.

If you don’t already own one, buy a charger. Simple as that.

—^ Yep this is what makes it so egregious, they should at minimum give you a wall plug. This is what their 1990s or whenver “think different” slogan has deteriorated into, this type of petty greenwashing.
Why? Everyone already has at least one. I guess even the OP has already one he did forget to mention.

At this point I’ve got so many chargers I give them away to friends and family when this happens. A few years back I started buying multi usb port chargers for all of the different devices that need to be charged. My current favorite is the Anker 543 65w charger; the dang thing will charge my MBA in a pinch.
Everyone's different. For years I did not upgrade my electronics devices, it's almost laughable. But to me, it wasn't necessary at the time. I had too much going on.

So when I upgraded my original SE to 12ProMax, I really did not have ANY chargers available. Then I purchased a few Apple Watches for family and friends, then purchased a few HomePods, and AirPods 3. Hence purchased a bunch of chargers in a short amount of time.

I wish Apple had the "option" for me to purchase one charger for 1/2 off at the store. At least when I traded in my SE (which was worth nothing) and upgraded to 12PRoMax. At least they knew I probably don't have any laying around by logical deduction. Just saying. I'm not pissed off. But it would have been nice.

When I first heard the idea of not having a charger in box, then I was, like many others, quite furious. But actually it does make sense a lot.

First of all, Apple is the first to provide a long term fast charging approach that does not change with each new device. When I was previously a Samsung user, then Samsung gave me a 15W brick, using Samsung AFC protocol. When my wife got another Samsung, same era, then they included a 25W USB Power Delivery brick. So changing the standard often is not helpful at all, even if it is an improvement, because hello there compatibility issue.

Then I went for an iPhone. I got a nonsense 5W charger from Apple with my iPhone 11, which I quickly replaced by Apple's 20W charging brick. Why they didn't put 20W charger in the box, I don't know, that part sucked a bit, but when I went for iPhone 12 Pro Max, then I didn't care about the charging brick anymore, because I already had a decent one. Then I bought the MagSafe charger and I absolutely love it. Now I have preordered the iPhone 14 Pro Max and I don't need useless stuff from the box and I don't need to buy new stuff either. So I don't expect anything from 14PM box, that would just sit in the drawer and become eventually just e-waste.

The paradigm change of having more compatible chargers and not including a brick for a device, no matter how much it costs is disruptive and not convenient at all, but in the end of the day, if devices change over years, but you can still retain some pieces of it (the charger), then it contributes a lot less to e-waste eventually. Which is a good thing for the environment.

Btw, actually Apple itself says in the knowledge articles that you can and should choose any charger to your own liking, that supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 or higher. You can buy an Anker, a Samsung or what ever charger that meets the spec. My wife actually uses a single charger from Satechi, which has a lot of USB-C ports and she charges her work laptop, her personal Macbook, her iPhone and her Apple Watch with it.

We already discussed this point in the thread too. Hard to believe, I know. The text below that image does indeed explain it more clearly, but very few people are reading all the waffle below the main purchase options.
I’m not sure. I think a lot of people read the ‘waffle’ that actually tells then what they’re actually buying. Try it sometime, then you won’t have to live on such a knife edge waiting for the surprise of what you spent your money on.
Those plugs should be device agnostic, or it will be absolutely insane: wanna charge iPhone? Buy iPhone charger. Oh, you just bought a Pixel 9? Here is the only cable that can charge your phone. If one use random cable, he/she could short the circuit and fry the phone. That’ll be exciting.
It’s was like this for many many many years, ironically until around the time of the iPhone introduction.

Yeah I’m well aware of this, which is why I raised the idea of threatening a return. In future I’ll be sure to check my iPhone includes the display and battery just in case they remove those from the retail packaging too.
You threated to return.

I wanna have what you are having.

It is annoying. Especially now that pretty much all phone manufacturers have followed apple by removing plugs. I refuse to believe it has anything to do with the environment. It's just a cash grab. If I buy literally any other electrical appliance or gadget, I get a freaking plug with it.

Theoretically, it’s also more efficient from a resource standpoint. Everyone is paying to have the charger in the box. It’s not free. It’s built into the sale price. Since Apple has removed the charger in the box, they’re able to reallocate the money spent on those bricks into the actual phone.

They also haven’t raised the prices on the Pro models since the iPhone X in 2017 (5 years ago). I personally don’t need another brick and cable, so why should I pay for it? I rathe have these cost savings.

What I don’t understand is why they still include a cable. When they said they were getting rid of chargers, I thought there’d be no cable nor brick. I mean, I guess it’s not as bad as having to buy both a plug and cable when you need it, but isn’t that still so wasteful for the cables? I mean, what is someone going to do, carry their laptop around to charge their phone? It makes more sense to include both or to include none.

I get what you mean - but I think the main difference is that cables wear out (twisting, bending, pulling etc) whereas a good brick basically lasts indefinitely.

  1. Plug charger into outlet
  2. Plug cable into charger
  3. Plug cable into iPhone
  4. Voila!
Jokes aside, I'm glad you're able to use your pixel charger.

Obviously this is your first iPhone, and probably also your first interaction with USB chargers and cables. But fear not! The new iPhone 14 Pro Max carries a lifetime battery that never requires charging. The white cable you mention is for syncing the phone with your Windows PC.
I really thought OP was joking. But it seems he isn’t.

It would be much better for the environment if instead of realeasing a new iPhone model every year, the do it for example every 2 year, many os us, just change the phone because there is something new, even if our device is still in perfect condition. So I say that it might be better for the environment not including a charger, but it would be even better if they don´t include the charger and cable (i see it coming) or even the phone... what I want to point is that Apple cares about money, and not including the charger is just because they save money in the transport with smaller packets , the money of the charger itself ....

There are. literally hundreds of manufacturers of USB-C charging adapters, you absolutely don't need to buy one from apple. Hell, I'm fairly certain that apple's own charger has the worst sales figures of any out there. Frankly it is shocking you don't have a drawer-full already.

Yes, in the ideal world there would be one in the box... but if I'm honest, mine just go into the big drawer-o-charging bricks since I already travel with ultra-small GaN chargers that charge everything from my phones to my laptops.

Since I’ve been using iPhones for years, I knew about this. And thankfully I had USB c bricks from our iPads and my 11 pro. And I have countless regular lighting cables.

But if I were a first time customer I’d be a little perturbed. I do wish Apple would give you the option to add one on during check out. For a fair price.

Buy one charger from Amazon and get the Anker charger.
