What do you think Apple will do with the naming scheme?

  • Apple will differentiate, two names: iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus + iPhone 8

  • Apple will not differentiate, one single name: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus & iPhone 8 Pro

Is it really so hard to understand? Firstly X wouldn’t be pronounced 10, and it is the internal name right now. iPhone 10 (if they stick with the numbers) would be called ‘iPhone 10’. But the most likely in my mind right now is Edition.

iPhone 8 makes no sense, the only reason why people think it makes sense is because they’re used to it from the many months it’s been referred to as iPhone 8. I said it at the beginning and I’ll say it again, it won’t be called 8. I don’t understand how anyone can’t understand this. Releasing a 7S and 8 in the same year?

I disagree, i think it will be called iPhone 8 and there will be no 7S.

We shall see.

Yup, the 7s and 7s Plus have been rumoured and reported on as far back as last year and the very reliable Ming-Chi-Kuo and John Gruber have said there will be 3 iPhones this year with the 7s 7s Plus and the 8/Pro/Edition.

It'll be called iPhone but referred to as the iPhone OLED.

What sense would it be to call it iPhone 8?!?

What do the phones next year be called? iPhone 8 as well?!?

Just trying to explain to people who walk into an Apple Store that Apple released an iPhone 7(S) and a iPhone 8 this year at the same time would be hard enough

I highly doubt it will be the 7s Pro. 7s Pro implies it's just another branch of the 7 when Apple wants to showcase it as an all new, state-of-the-art, flagship. It will be named to stand out on it's own. My own gut says it won't even have the "pro" name in the product. The "pro" moniker on a phone is a bit trite but also doesn't go far enough to confer the "elite" nature Apple wants to position this phone. It also won't be named iPhone Edition because there is already the iPhone SE "Special Edition." If the SE is a Special Edition then an Edition name would be blasé and ill-fitting.

I say they will be called 7/7S and IPHONE X (10th anniversary edition)

I believe in iPhone Pro or maybe X

It can't be called Edition, I already have SE (SpecialEdition)
However they can't continue calling it SE either, mini maybe.

Calling the anniversary edition 8 is ridiculous if they're calling the others 7 and 7S

I rather think they're moving towards no numbers this year or next.
It will start to be a mess otherwise.
I mean it will start to sound weird with iPhone 15S or iPhone 27

It's time for a different way of naming/structure anyway.
Mac's don't have numbers, so I think we are going in that direction.

So iPhone, iPhone S or (+), iPhone SE or Mini, iPhone Pro

Or  might come up with something entirely different to honor Steve at iPhone's anniversary.

Well I disagree with everything in that sentence, and strongly believe (and have reason to believe) that won't be the case.

What are the pro features?

All the features the rest of the market have had for over a year, but which Apple are going to sell to you for a nice premium. Because they're so grateful for your loyal custom. :D
[doublepost=1501860548][/doublepost]To be honest, I wouldn't put it past them calling it 'iPhone' hence forth. It's becoming clear that this new 'iPhone 8' is a one-size device, that's Apple idea of the perfect iPhone, how it should be. Like on day 1 when you didn't get a choice of size, it's just...one device. Plus they're gonna hit a naming issue some year so best to sort that out sooner rather than later.

They are dropping the "i" moniker from it and just calling it THE PHONE. Steve Jobs told me in a vision quest after my trip to Taco Bell.

As much as I'd love Apple to drop the 'i' moniker across the board, it's too huge of a brand to scrap it now. So all they can do is never use it for a new product ever again. It would be like McDonald's changing the name of the Big Mac or something, it's too ingrained in society to change it now.

There is nothing "Pro" about an iPhone. I don't believe the Pro moniker will ever happen for an iPhone. Mainly because there isn't anything "Pro" about a phone that receives messages and makes calls. It just sounds like a horrible marketing idea, contrary to what others think in here. It's either going to retain the numbering system or incorporate some other label.

I hope it's not the "iPhone Edition" because that sounds dumb and doesn't make sense to me.

I don't think it will be called "8" because of the confusion of releasing 7s and 8 at the same time, and then 8s next year? Just doesn't seem right.

Could be called "Pro". People act like that designation means something specific, but it really just means the version of something that costs more and has better specs and features. That seems to hit the nail on the head here.

Calling it just "iPhone" or "iPhone 2017" seems very Apple-like, but then I'm not sure how they continue from there. What's the next one called, iPhone 2018? Or is that one iPhone 8?

"iPhone X"... I don't know. The whole X=cool marketing is a bit played out, but they could do it because of the visual pun of it also being a Roman numeral 10, which fits the 10th anniversary.

AE for "anniversary edition" seems feasible.

I think it will simply be iPhone and iPhone Pro. Apple has been simplifying their product naming schemes and I think this makes the most sense. Drop the number. Let Samsung play that game.

That it thats what i have been saying since day one,cuz thats what was happening when iPhone 5S was releasing everyone thought that it would be called the iPhone 6 everyone is just going crazy there more chance that it will be called the 7S instead of 8

I think some people around here have too much idle time on their hands, that they want to sit around pontificating meaningless drivel.

Isn't that what forums are for, discussion about topics that you may not see fit about that something is 'meaningless' versus what somebody else might find interesting?

I think you will find out as we approach closer to the iPhone launch, curiosities are piqued and and the rumors are flourishing with contradictions, which makes for interesting discussions in some respects. But to each their own on what's considered meaningless in a tech forum.
