What do you think Apple will do with the naming scheme?

  • Apple will differentiate, two names: iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus + iPhone 8

  • Apple will not differentiate, one single name: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus & iPhone 8 Pro

If it has a 120hz Promotion display like the new iPad Pros then I'm on Board.

However. I think very possibly Apple will be getting rid of Numbered Names altogether. Because they are behind Samsung now. Galaxy 8s Plus vs the IPhone 7s Plus

IMO total speculation the 7s line will be renamed IPhone Edition for both sizes confusing but you own a MacBook Pro regardless of size you don't own a MacBook Pro Plus.

And the OLED 5.8" rumored iPhone 8 will IMO be called the IPhone Pro

Pro features

#1. OLED Display 125%sRGB Color Gamut coverage
#2. HDR
#3. Pro Phtography with a mega new camera new Specs.
#4. The A11 will be Feature HMP heterogeneous multi processing
#5. 4GB RAM

Just enough features to make it "Pro" then next years 6.3" OLED IPhone Pro will feature the 120hz Promotion display. And last years 5.8" Pro with new Specs but no 120hz display will just be called IPhone Edition.
Absolutely none of those make it Pro. Sorry.

There will never be 'iPhone Pro' in the entire history of iPhones for the next 50 years+. Enjoy.

I said something similar in Post #40. There is zero relevance to an iPhone being labeled with the "Pro" moniker. It's an annually released phone that makes and receives messages/calls.Personally, it sounds gimmicked with the term "Pro."

So I have been thinking lately about the supposed iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and iPhone 8 models. I believe that Apple will give all three new models the same base name.

An -S edition usually takes the design of the previous generation + internal improvements. But... what the leaks have shown us so far, for all three models, are an entirely new design (glass back, metal band, glass front).

Look at this:

009634_37744-47370703.jpg

In other words: the 'iPhone 7S' and 'iPhone 7S Plus' have the same design as the 'iPhone 8'.
Look closely, they all three have the same glass rear casing and the same metal band. It's not just 'similar': it looks exactly the same!

That's why I believe that Apple will go for the following naming scheme:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone 8 Pro

Or perhaps they will skip the numbers and go for 'iPhone X', or just 'iPhone'. They might not call the new 5.8" "Pro", it could be called "Extra" or whatever. The point I want to make is: the 'base name' will be the same for all three models.

I also believe that all three models will have the same new features, like wireless charging and a new 'A11' chip. The highlight of the Pro model will of course be the near bezel-less front with OLED display and a focus on AR/VR.

By giving all three models the same base name (such as 'iPhone 8'), Apple will argue that "whatever model you'll get, you'll have a shiny new iPhone 8."

Only way they will be able to sell these. Calling the 4.7 and 5.5 models 7s makes them sound outdated. From a consumer perspective, technical and physical(from the back) uniformity should help(which is why they're reducing colors to reduce sku's). Everyone will get a new phone (hopefully)!

You need to think less and I would surely not post my thoughts is they were this erroneous.

I will bet we will have a 7S and 7S+ just as we should. The 8, Pro or edition will just be frosting on the cake.

What makes them erroneous?

You sound very confident. I don't think we'll see an -S edition of the current aluminum iPhone 7.

In all likeliness, there very well may be a 7S and 7S Plus. It wouldn't make sense for Apple to not offer a lower tier under the OLED model. And there's nothing really indicating otherwise if that there wouldn't be a 7S model.

And as far as the naming goes, the term "Pro" is completely exhausted and its unlikely to be used for an iPhone label. It does not fit the iPhone appropriately as it would a MacBook Pro or iPad Pro. Completely different products with different attributes. An iPhone is not a Pro device, it's a commodity updated on an annual basis.

More likely is them not calling the iPhone 8 - "iPhone 8" for the reasons you mentioned. I think it will be called iPhone X in honor of the 10th anniversary. This, plus the premium pricing on this redesigned product, allows the 7s to exist without making it seem outdated.

Well, my shiny new iPad Pro 10.5 isn't all that Pro-ish either. Neither is the 1200 base spec MacBook Pro. Pro doesn't mean "tool for professionals" anymore. It has many meanings and applications. We don't know the specs of this new phone...it could have near Pro level cameras and other new tech.

This new lower end phone has an all new design....they're not going to call it 7S. iPhone 7 was a one and done stop gap product, a third year of the iPhone 6 generation, until they were ready to launch the real next gen phones. They won't tie this new family of iPhones to that.

The way I see a MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, those tools are used for productivity and work development with different types of architecture in desktop applications and or mobile applications. However, Only the user can decide what's considered Pro in terms of what they can accomplish with those specific devices.

And for this new Lower end model, most commonly referred to as the 7S, but isn't an entirely an all new design. It has some revamped hardware features, but the physical design is primarily the same as the iPhone 7 with the exception of the vertical camera and Home button placement. (At least based on rumors and leaks). It Will also likely incorporate an LCD display as well.

Now, where I do agree with you, is that it may not be called a 7S, as we have seen the iPhone 6/6s/7 with that three-year cycle. They very well may change the Title to something else to separate it from that three year gap as you mentioned.

Because I can see into the future!:p

What makes you think your thoughts or analysis is better. It surely can't be what you posted.
Based on previous models, it's not a weird thought to state that "brand new design = new model number (and not -S)". That rules out '7S'.

All very nice, but who is the target audience of the Plus model? It's already at the top end of the price scale, only narrowly below where the iPhone 8 is expected to sit (in the UK at least) and the new OLED phone is very likely to share all of its features. It makes zero sense that Apple would launch an all new Plus model when all it would be is an awkward not-quite-the-iPhone8 throwback.

Or they could make it... cheaper... and the premium model more expensive?

Not Touch ID

Not Touch ID
Apple ain't gonna bring out a supposedly enhanced version of the Plus and drop the price vs the outgoing model.

Having touch ID wouldn't give a 7S Plus a selling point over an iPhone 8. Touch ID is only being done away with because Apple have found a better technology to supplant it. That's like having a choice between two houses and going for the one that has standard broadband instead of the one that has fibre optic broadband.

Apple has changed the iPhone design multiple times and kept the same numbering.
Not substantially. The major redesigns have been the iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6. The 3G and all of the S models to date have retained the dimensions, screen sizes and visual appearance of their predecessors.
