If iPhones are going to be as thin as iPods, i hope they have at least 5 inches or above screen size. Holding that thin and small iPod touch was so annoying when i had it. Ergonomic nightmare.
i was looking at this chart pie
to each their own i guess. but phablets (5.5+) are too big to be used as phones and to small to be properly used as tablets. but if you always need to have both devices with you, then you need to make a compromise...
surfing and watching movies below 10-15 inch IS a compromise
talking, messaging and taking photos on a 5.5+ device IS a compromise
i personally dont like mish-mash, middle, somewhere in between, wanna be all products, too much compromise. this whole world was built on specialisation. but i understand the public transit commuters...
i guess we have a different understanding of a word compromise. i care about a quality user experience, you care about practicality. this is funny because this is precisely the difference between ios and android
Yeah it all depends on your use. I would never watch a movie on a 10" screen, that's a compromise, a huge one IMO. Much less on a 6" phablet, no way I'd watch a movie. But talking isn't a compromise in the least IMO, I'm not sure I get that one. Messaging is the opposite, it's much nicer on a larger device and a larger keyboard and to view MMS/videos, etc.
But for MY needs I still think a tablet and a phone is MUCH MUCH more of a compromise than a phablet. One of the MOST liberating things I've done in the tech world was leave my tablet at home and have the use of both hands when going out and not having to worry about a tablet. But hey, that's why both of these scenarios sell well.
I disagree but my needs and behaviors are much different from yours. Hopefully, Apple does release the 4.7" and 5.5" model to satisfy everyone. I'd really like to see developers of various popular messaging apps to start making iPad version though. I'd like the option to have my phone on a charger in the other room and being able to completely work off the iPad.
I can't wait to get away from Android though and get back to iOS so hopefully that 5.5" is true.
Certainly different needs will like one option better than the other. I travel a ton so have grown to hate taking my tablet with me, always having it in hand or in a man bag, I certainly don't miss those days. I also don't miss the days of squinting at my iphone trying to browse the web, or play a game, or read a document, or pretty much anything.
I can't wait to get away from Android though and get back to iOS so hopefully that 5.5" is true.
I don't think any of these companies should be worried. They all have distinct advantages (even blackberry). I can't see them giving up and fading away anytime soon.
And consumers should love when companies tremble. Makes them up their game.
Or in Microsoft's case, copy the competition.
Or in Microsoft's case, copy the competition.
What exactly did Microsoft copy? Except for maybe Cortana!
Windows phones OS is much different than iOS or Android. The live tiles have always had notifications. I don't have a Windows 8.1 phone so i guess I am not seeing it.
Not that it's a big deal all companies are inspired by others including Apple, Microsoft's latest phone update that goes live next week copied Android and iOS openly. Features like Quiet Hours (iOS Do not disturb), Cortana (Siri), Notification Center (Android and iOS).
With all the developers and folks at Microsoft, I wish they could be more in a leadership role with its own vision versus being a follower.
Neither is worried. Google let's developers improve every part of android and Microsoft still has Office
Microsoft won't have office for long.
Considering iOS has been playing catch up with Android on many features, I don't think it is fair to throw Microsoft under the bus as the only one following. But now that WP has reached parity with ios and Android, I have heard of new concepts like 3d touch coming from Microsoft. I guess now that they have the core features done, they can start innovating their own concepts.
You are correct in Apple copying Google on a few features and vice versa. I'm not sure about WP reaching feature parity though. I'm quite sure Google and Microsoft like Samsung will now start targeting Health on their devices. iOS 8 features pushes Apple ahead again which means Microsoft will mostly be behind the curve.
Gotta wait for a few more days to see what Google brings out at Google I/O to see where things stand. I like that we have 3 companies pushing the software boundaries though regardless of who brings it to market first.
As for WP feature parity with iOS and Android, I was referring to WP adding Cortana, Swype keyboard, customizable home screens and lock screens, auto app updating, notification center, and so on. These were huge gaps that are now filled.

One person's compromise is another's convenience....
I for sure cannot fit our 55 inch HDTV in my palms while laying down before i go to sleep, and wanting to watch a nice documentary or may be catch a show episode even.
Having watched movies for quite a while in university years on a 13 inch laptop, 10 inch isn't a big deal. Of course when i am in my living room nothing beats the huge TV screen.
I hear ya, but my bedroom wall fits my 110" screen quite nicely. I'd rather watch that than any tablet, this way I can have my bigscreen and lay in bed with no compromise.
