Then it’s a combination of size and screen resolution, with maybe a touch of Face ID sensors but I’d say more the resolution. Point is there’s still no reason to think it would have compared to the Plus, I certainly didn’t think it would.

Considering I am using a Note 8 with a higher resolution than the X and I can set it to use 720p if I wanted to, I don't think it matters because that will only give me about a 20 minute battery improvement.

There are some major hardware issues with that X if it can't get the same if not better battery than a 8+

you removed the corners to be able to get the screen the same size? Why? Plus, screen sizes are measured diagonally everywhere in the entire world, why the need to complicate it by calculating resolution with ppi, removing what you feel is not the screen, when in fact it is, to make a point...
just to make sure there's no mis-communication/misunderstandings going on here.. what is the answer to this question:

i have two displays.. screen-A has a diagonal measurement of 5.7" and screen-B has a diagonal measurement of 6.3"..
which display is larger?

(bonus Q.. explain why..
bonus 2-- how much larger? )
where are you getting at?

I said apple’s website states the diagonal measurement is 5.85” with the screen being 5.8” they note that on there.

it's on par to what I was getting with my 7+

i'm getting at:

you're telling me the size comparison i made is inaccurate even though it's not.. so there is some sort of misunderstanding happening in there which i'm trying to narrow down..

since you keep posting diagonal measurements as a reference (like in the post you just made), i guess a misunderstanding of diagonal is the first point of misunderstanding..

which is why i asked the question i did..
to keep the suspense level low ( :) ), i'll put the answer now..

the 5.7" display is larger.. 33% larger..

the diagonal measurement is meaningless for comparing display sizes which are different aspect ratios (such as between the Plus and X)

5.8"(X) means nothing compared to 5.5" (Plus) unless you account for the actual shape of the screen as well..

in contrast, you can make an OK comparison between iPhone 8 and iPhone 8+ using a diagonal measurement since they both have the same shaped display.

Well, you do account for the screen dimensions and calculate total area of the screen. In which case you find that the 5.8" iPhone X and 5.5" iPhone 8+ differ in total screen area by around 6%, with the Plus having the slightly greater total screen area.

I don't have the numbers, but i read them somewhere on these Forums. I'm sure you can do a search and find them if you want. For me, a roughly 5% difference (loss) was not enough to deter me from changing over to the X from the 8+ form factor. And I am really happy with it, the phone fits so much better in my hand, and is easier to fit in all pockets. I hadn't realized what a loss in comfort overall the larger Plus size presented for me -- just that I really liked all of the screen area, and the higher resolution (vs the non-Plus iPhone).

My 7+ would use about 50% of battery using Waze to work (52 mile commute in SoCal =\>75 minutes, one way), where the iPX will use < 30%.
From that alone, I’d say much improved.
Otherwise, I do notice that when I’m not constantly on a charge, it is improved from where my 7+ would have been.
This was surprising to me, considering OLED is supposed to require more energy and the iPX supposedly has a smaller battery than the 7+.
And I know I’m using this more than the 7+... I can’t get over how beautiful the display is!

Here's my battery life today (meaning Nov 13., though the day is over now!). Phone is at 55%.

EDIT: No 'Low Power Mode' use at all today.
Also, I have used the Accessibility "Smart Invert Screen Colors" (something like that) all day -- which I added as a 3-click "on/off" switch using the right-hand side button/Siri button. So I can quickly toggle this on/off as I need to. I used the standard screen mode for just a few short periods over the course of the day. I think that the 'invert' mode (black background) nicely extends the battery life.
Oh - and that's why the icon colors are funky - even though the screen was 'black', the screenshot shows it as 'white.'

also, if you follow the discussion between iamaydo & myself a little further back in this thread, you'll see that's the very link that started this back-n-forth between us
;)
hahaha...I guess I haven't been paying enough attention! Thank you for your efforts to bring clarity to the Great Screen Size Debate!

Really, that post was very useful to me, as I was concerned about how much smaller the X screen area might have been versus the Plus. As a Plus user, I really didn't want to 'sacrifice' too much usable area. You calculations were very useful and confirmed my hopeful estimate (just guesstimated based on the added height and slight loss of width) that the phone would be similar, though smaller.

So I didn't use my iPhone 7+ or iPad mini 4 today, and used only my iPhone X for everything while trying to run the battery down. I unplugged around 9AM and I almost made it to midnight when I hit 1% without using low-power mode.

I had the phone in hand all day, mostly reading an entire book with black background and white text, but also making some phone calls for over half an hour and surfing the web for an hour and a half. I managed to get 10 hours of continuous real life usage over almost 15 hours unplugged, with Kindle, Safari, Photos, Phone, Settings and Mail showing the most on-screen time (in that order). i had the phone in hand 2/3 of the day.

I didn't use my Apple watch for any phone calls or texts this time, but I viewed most of my texts on the lock screen of the iPhone X and occasionally went into messages to mark them as read. I admit that could probably run it down to 1% in 8 hours if I'd switched to using more Safari and less eBooks.

In contrast, when i was using my iPad or Kindle to read books and surf the web instead, and using my Apple Watch S3 LTE more, then I was getting over 10 hours of use over 24 hours of standby on the X, without going below 20% charge.

I didn't invert screen colors, or make any changes to my typical and previously listed location, background app refresh, animations, or push mail settings. I kept the screen dim but everything was the same as in my battery tests the past few days. It also turns out my lock screen is set for perspective not still, as previously thought, so it moves as I move the phone which uses more power than still lock screen photos.

See Screenshots below - also have a screenshot showing that I didn't use my iPhone 7+ or iPad today.

iPhone 7+ was at 77% at 24 hours standby in an earlier post this AM, now 54% at 36 hours.

iPad mini 4 only used 6% battery in standby for 11 hours. i almost forgot to unplug it today to check the drain, since I wasn't going to use it.

Feels worse on the iPhone X. primarily because of
1) same battery wise

BUT

1) larger resolution vs iPhone 7/8 Plus so expect the usage to drop lower.

in some cases i feel like the battery is a step down, despite the increase. they should have kept it at 1080p ratio but stretch the length out at least, 1125x($$$$) is a very funny ratio...

looking at note 8 s8 s8+ they at least maintain 1440p ratio rather than a weird number.

My real test will be today as I’m travelling to Amsterdam from Aberdeen

With general usage, film watching and listing to music I’ll see how it fairs tonight when I finally enter my hotel room at 9pm

I will post my battery stats tonightl I am also coming from an iPhone 7 Plus

People still harping on about what constitutes screen size?! lol

My battery life is incredible. Over 4h into the day and is at 99% with a fair amount of messages, emails and a few phone calls. It’s absolutely fantastic, if you use it as a regular smar phone and not a mass media consumption device that you are glued to constantly, in which case it’ll be as good or better than a laptop.

I also have an iPhone 7 Plus and I'm considering to switch. Keep us posted! How's your iPhone X battery usage compared to 7 Plus on normal work days?

It’s actually pretty good but as I’ve mentioned, the real test will Be today

Normally when I’m travelling I use a Mophie Juice Air pack with my iPhone 7 Plus but it did add a bit of bulk and weight. So today will be a fine test
