HTC 10 review: great isn’t good enough
The 10 is just a phone in a world where other phones are so much more

With the 10, HTC has done what it’s very good at: making a well-made smartphone that excels at all of the things you want a phone to do. Again, it’s easily the best phone that HTC has ever made.

Give HTC a trophy of participation for making a phone that actually competes in the big leagues this year. But then give your money to somebody else, because you can get more for your dollar with an iPhone, Galaxy, or Nexus.

HTC 10
8.0VERGE SCORE
GOOD STUFF
  • Fast performance
  • Reliable battery
  • Great sound
  • Good software
BAD STUFF
  • Boring design
  • Slow camera
  • High price

Verge is **** for anything but Apple. This is particularly one of the worst reviews I have ever read from them (not just because I like the HTC 10).

Oh look another boring phone with little innovation and the same design:
http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/22/9368415/apple-iphone-6s-iphone-6s-plus-review

9.0.... huh?

And a phone with literally 4 year old recycled parts:

http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/25/11302968/apple-iphone-se-review

8.7. LOL. sorry, not dogging you at all epicrayban. Verge is just silly.

I don't disagree. I think HTC 10 deserves more praise.

6S starts at $650 16gig, $750 64 gig for most people or $850 6s+ 64 gig

not sure what the latest price is on full price samsung, but slickdeals has an international 32gb for $599 edge $699

m10 32gb $599 w/ that discount right now

Nexus 6p 32gb $400 after$50 giftcard now

if we are talking about value, 6P beats them all? why even mention iphone and galaxy?

Pretty ridiculous from the Verge. The review article is hidden away. You have to scroll down to get to it. It's not even top news.

The Verge review can pretty much be discarded. I've read and watched a handful of reviews and they've all been favorable. Despite that I'll be sticking with my G5. For me, nothing the HTC 10 has trumps what the LG G5 offers.

Right, which is why their highest rated phone is the S7 Edge at 9.1

http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/8/11172968/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-review

And why they have several article the last couple of weeks about how Apple needs to step up with the iPhone 7 or how certain things about the iPhone are stuck in the past.

Don't be mad because of the review, they still said it was a great phone, and an 8.0 is still a really good score.

Their point is that there are several good phones out now, and that there really isn't a good reason to pick this one over the others. And I can totally understand that. I think it's a great handset, might pick one up down the road, but I'm not giving up my edge or iPhone right now to get one.

I think HTC did a very nice job with the 10. Doesn't wow me inside/out like the M7 did but the M7 didn't get the most important basics right either. So HTC kinda took a step back on aesthetics but improved everything else like audio, camera, and battery life. The HTC 10 isn't a bad looking device from the back but the front looks too plain without the grilled speakers and chamfered, chrome edges.

What could be more exciting is the first HTC-made Nexus smartphones in nearly seven years. If the HTC 10 can carry its features onto this year's Nexus, then could have the first time a Nexus having one of the best audio, camera, and battery life. I am hoping with a faster SoC and Android N on board, HTC also improves the front of the future Nexus.

HTC 10 is very nice. Probably isn't going to change the company's fortunes at all. Too little, too late. Perhaps the HTC 10 is a better device than the experimental LG G5 for getting the basics right and playing it safe. But the one to watch for are the future Nexus smartphones (2016-2018). They don't sell that well either but at least Nexus is returning to their original maker for the next few years.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge will win best smartphone of 2016 though.

Man, the fall is going to be sick. Between the Note 6, iPhone 7 plus, and a Nexus made HTC phone with android N and it's multi window goodies, can't wait.

Best software other than nexus, unlocked and no carrier BS, will definitely age better than Samsung devices..all nerd reasons but the verge is for nerds eh?

Samsung wins on aesthetics and screen for me but those aren't priorities for me

Reviews seem positive overall. I'm a bit uncertain about the shutter speed from what I've seen in videos and that it's been noted in some reviews but it's wait and see.

After seeing how much damage the S6 and S7 variants receive from small drops, the all metal build and Uh-Oh protection of the 10 is a real advantage in my view. I wouldn't have to case the 10 whereas it's a must for glass covered devices.

I think uh oh was HTC's late response to waterproofing on the Samsung. You get one free drop in water to feel better for a year.

And of course the Verge gave the Galaxy S7 Edge a nod above the iPhone 6S. They had to or they would be laughed off the internet. But notice only by .1 points.

They've had Uh Oh protection offered for free well before the 10. So it wasn't just a response to the S7. It's something HTC has already been doing.

I'm quite excited for the rest of 2016 in terms of phones. OEMs have already put out very impressive phones, and we still haven't had the phones which offer the latest technologies at a lower price, like the OnePlus 3 and the Moto X.

I agree. All the android phones that have come out this year are top notch in performance. All consumer need to worry about is how much bloat they want, skin, size etc.

I have had a few plays with the A9 the last couple of days. Obviously not the same animal but I was surprised how much I like it. One of the reps at an AT&T store let me try theirs as well (it's his daily driver) and it felt great in hand.

Display quality is very very good and the device was pretty snappy. The price of $519 obviously needs to come down when the M10 is released. And one can easily note the draino on the battery after using it for awhile. :)

At least I was rather impressed though and look forward to hands on with the M10 shortly.

Some HTC rep type folks over at XDA and Reddit are saying the 10 might start shipping next week and arrive earlier than predicted. I wonder when it will be in the stores to get a firsthand look at it?

I'd really like to try this phone out. I used to have an HTC One M7, which I really liked (except the lousy camera).
But I just can't pull the trigger on this. I think it's a bit overpriced. I don't like the fact they (apparently) aren't including the earbuds in Canada, plus they don't appear to be offering 64 gb models here.
I just can't help feeling that it's the old HTC all over again. Having a nice product but just getting one or two nagging things wrong with it. Nothing big, but cumulatively enough to make me stop and say to myself, nah, maybe not, when it comes time to place my order.
Maybe in future if the price drops...

No one I've asked seems to know when it will be available. I guess the best way is check for preorder availability, that should be a sign of it coming shortly thereafter where we can get a look see at it. I'm not planning on preordering from HTC and they had better leave that promotion in tack for awhile, $599 is even more than I would want to spend but if it is aces well then maybe. :)

And I am not concerned about the camera quality which would only be a nice to have for my use if it is very good as well.

No because the Galaxy handsets are always inferior to the Note range. To me the Note models are always Samsung's true flagships.

I stopped by a TMO store today. They hinted that they would not get this phone in the store until well after people already have it.

I've got a problem. Got a S7edge at launch, but still just placed an order for an HTC 10. Oh well might as well try it out and then decide which one to keep.

That is the best way to find out which one you like the best. :)
