Wait what, they did that?
Urgh.

It's so bizarre how so many companies this year have taken some serious mis-steps.
2017 really should have been the year where we saw flagship devices being success after success and whilst there has been some great devices, ALL of them seem to be gimped in some way or another.
Whether its FPS locations, notches, removing headphone jacks or hard storage or dodgy display panels, there's lots to be remedied for 2018.
I agree.

What I'm particularly worried about is the display, which I hear is a pentile one. I have one of these in my old Galaxy Alpha and it's definitely a bit fuzzy at 720p in 4.7". I think 1080p in 6" would be worse in the sense of distracting.

Compared to the pin-sharp displays other 2017 flagships have included, this could be a serious drawback.

Last year the Mate 9 was sold through Best Buy unlocked for $599, it really was a great device for that price. The battery life was said to be amazing, and also read it was a very snappy fast phone.

But now from the Mate 9 @ $599 compared to the Mate 10 @ $850, no thanks. Why such a huge price jump from year to year ?

But I am glad to see a manufacturer launch a new phone correctly, with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, not just the old 7.1, and the right size 4,000mAh battery, which all Android phones should have.

I have a mate 9 and will probably get the 10 next year on renewal.

The mate 9 is due to get oreo shortly I been reading and it has had 3 updates to the UI in the last year.
Each update making it slightly faster or making battery last longer.

OK so it not an OS update but it not left out in cold.

I had my heart set on it, until I found out it would be 18:9, at least for the flagship version, no thanks. I've heard only negative things about their software updates. Still, if it was priced ridiculously low like $499 or something, then maybe. Otherwise still waiting on the XL2. Lastly they are probably the only bezel-less display oem who puts their ugly company name on the front of the phone, come on get with the times.
I have a P9 and the software updates have been good. It's usually no longer than 2 months late in terms of security patches compared to the official Google line. Mine got Android 7.0 in January which was also reasonably good compared to other non-Google phones. Overall last year I think it got around 12 updates, starting from May (that's when I bought it).

To give another example, the Blueborne patch was released for the P9 about a month after Google.

I also expect it will get Oreo, which would be in line with Huawei's 2-year OS update policy.

In my opinion it seems better than Samsung or LG. Perhaps Sony updates a little faster? In any case, Huawei is far from being the worst.

Love it :)

They keep improving these devices and bringing them closer to serious consideration for me.

I like how Huawei are also customising their EMUI to look less like Stock Android, and rather stick out from all the OEMs that are fading away into Stock Android.

They have kept the Mate10 as a true power user's phone and made the Mate10 Pro aimed more at your iPhone crowd, although still keeping it more functional than an iPhone.

The Mate10 is the 1 to go for here, NOT the Mate10 Pro.

Oh and would you look at that another OEM that is building a true convergence device, their implementation is going to give Samsung a run for their money, think I have found my 2nd 'go-to' Android OEM.

The Mate 10 Pro looks like a pretty sweet phone, but I prefer stock Android the most. I'd still chose the Pixel 2 XL over the Mate 10, Note 8, V30, etc...

Most people can't choose, since they aren't both available simultaneously. Generally speaking Western countries get only the Pro version.

Here in Switzerland we have only one option, the 128Gb Pro model. That's it. They even managed to make the blue one an exclusive with Swisscom (one of the operators), and so far I've only seen the grey and the copper one up for preorder. Speaking of preorders, they come with the Moleskine smart pen, and shops say they'll receive them in December.

I don't know about this one, I was excited to get one but I think I'll probably pass. The loss of the headphone jack and the microSD, plus the low resolution screen are too many compromises for me.

I'm sure it's a good phone and it will have amazing battery life, but at least on that account I'm fine with a much smaller capacity, I don't need a 2-day phone.

cheers

That's such a shame that they are selling the normal Mate10 in limited countries.

I don't understand why they are selling the Mate10 Pro exclusively in some countries, when the Mate10 is the better device.

I assume you meant the Mate 10 Lite? It's sold here for about CHF350. It looks like a mid-range device. Knowing Huawei, it's probably a solid one.

Yes thats it, thanks! made a typo before. Looks more than good actually. Slightly surprised though that Huawei didn't make this a Android One model.

Not interested at all. Has some cool features but it doesn't float my boat.

This is how I feel.
It's always good to have choice, but Huawei's Android skin is just not something I can appreciate.
Before having the P9, with the exception of one Samsung (whose interface I didn't particularly like), I only had Nexus phones, so I felt the same.

Having said that, EMUI is pretty good. Since version 5 it even looks nice - like stock but white & blue. And it has quite a number of handy features. I personally like disabling data access on a per-app basis and disabling the app drawer, its built-in QR code, the business card scanner, generally the contacts app and the dialer which are very good, with lots of integrations (WhatsApp etc) and so forth.

And they have the best camera app hands down, in my opinion. Very powerful and flexible, and easy to use.

Like I said the EMUI has had 3 updates in last year and oreo is due soon.

I like iphone don't get me wrong!
I have had few, last being 6S+

IOS is smoother overall.

But I do generally prefer android:
for SD card
for drag and drop support files in and out the phone
external media support via OTG.

Anyone else prefer the non-pro? Front fingerprint sensor, better resolution (weird?), 16:9 aspect ratio, no crappy Huawei logo on the front, and cheaper. I'd definitely consider one if they made it to work on Verizon. Stock android would be nice as well, but oh well.

I don't like front fingerprint sensors, I think they're awkward to touch while using the phone 1-handed! Particularly such a large phone and the sensor is placed so low, I don't think it would work for me. I skipped upgrading to the P10 (I wanted the green one) because they put the sensor in the front.

The screen has a higher resolution but the "Pro" has an OLED one. The Huawei logo is something I never notice :)

Stock Android is on very few phones (I can only think of the Essential - mind you, not the Pixel, which has basically a Google skin on it) and at least in the Essential reviews it was slammed as being just too basic and lacking in UI functionality. And EMUI is the best Android skin in my opinion, it's not a negative.

Not sure if you're getting this one in the US. I'm afraid not!

Yeah the OLED is definitely a huge plus for the Pro version. I highly prefer front fp sensors, especially for those times when a rear mounted one is a pain like when its in my car holder or sitting on my desk, also find them easier to use one handed, but that's just me. The logo is a HUGE turnoff for me, for years I railed against Samsung for doing this and they finally stopped doing it. WTF am I paying so much money just to advertise for someone else and have to look at the logo every time I want to admire my phone?

I'm not familiar with EMUI, it may be awesome. My gripe isn't with the UI, as I do like touchwiz for example. It's for how long it takes these oems to release OS updates. I'm not sure how good, or how bad Huawei is in this respect.

Yeah I'm in the US, but if they follow the Mate 9 then I won't be getting it because it won't fully work with Verizon.

The updates are a bit slow, oreo due next month on the mate 9 i read.

EMUI is much better in my opinion over touchwiz.
I'm a big samsung fan and most my phones been samsung, but after got to the mate 9 and it's EMUI, it's gonna take a bit to get me back to samsung.

In my opinion samsung, like apple has become a "status symbol" for some people, not everyone but some.

I have an ipad pro and ipod touch and have had an iphone 6s+ before you say i'm anti apple ios.

Well on Android you can set trusted Bluetooth devices. So if you connect the phone to your car via Bluetooth, you don't need to access the fingerprint sensor at all. You can also check out Android Auto, it's likely it doesn't require unlocking when running and it has a good (simplified) interface for in-car use.

Huawei is decent with the updates.

The logo thing, well, some products just have them. Cars for example :) I think the only logo-free phone on the market is the Essential. Apple is also very bad in this regard, they put their corporate logo especially on laptops in the most visible place. It used to light up too.

Yeah I know about trusted Bluetooth devices, but there are times when I don't want to leave my phone insecure like that. It is nice to have and I have used it in the past. Android Auto is nice, my car has it, but I find it too limiting and prefer to just have my phone in a car dock. I can use all my phone and audio functions right through the vehicles Bluetooth, and I prefer Waze on the phone as the AA version is limited.

Most phones these days are logo free on the front. The back I could care less about as it will have a case or skin, and I rarely look at the back. Apple has had the front of their phones logo free since the very first iPhone.

Great suggestions, thanks much. I'm hoping against hope that it will work on Verizon this time around.

Oreo next month on last years model is pretty darn good IMO, that's like 2 1/2 months after Oreo's official release. I would find 2-3 months VERY acceptable to get a new OS.
