My P20 Pro arrived a couple of hours ago and I've spent some time setting it up and getting to grips with it.
Early impressions are really positive.
Biggest surprise out the box is that Huawei pre-install a tempered glass screen protector for you! I think it's a screen protector but it looks and feels like one!
Setting up was easy and fast, with hardly any warmth to the phone. Hooray haha.
This is only a quick overview until I spend the weekend with it, but I enjoyed that Google's keyboard is the standard on this phone - that's welcome.
Huawei's EMUI doesn't feel obtrusive at all. The only thing I'm not crazy on are the app icons. Weirdly, the phone reminds me a lot of the LG V30, can't really put my finger on why, but it definitely has that feel to it.
Some strange quirks with the Oreo app tray shades. Music (my biggest bug bear with Pixel) is a strange one.
I opened a song from Apple Music, Spotify and Google Play to see how it handled the notification both in the tray and on the lock screen.
Spotify came out on top. Not a big fan of the neon orange bar from Google Play, and Apple music's looked awful.
But, like the S9, the lock screen doesn't turn into a magnified album art work cover - so that's a huge bonus!
Do you know what is funny? The only app I have encountered so far that doesn't fill into the notch section of the phone is Apple Music. Lol. The company who's own phone has a notch!
OK then...!
Big ol' black bar at the top haha.
The phone feels fantastic and very premium.
I really like the design.
It's just a tiny tiny bit too big for comfortable use with my small hands, but I noticed The Verge's review said that they felt it was the closest to perfect ergonomically for them. The reviewer was coming from a Pixel 2 XL which was uncomfortable in comparison. That, I can relate to.
I am a huuuge fan of the finger print scanner on the front. It's so fast.
It's also a little more than just a big ol scanner. It acts as the navigation keys, which you may notice are not showing on my devices screen.
The FPS 'button' (it's not a button) can act as the back, home and recent's buttons. Press on it once and it'll go back. Press and hold for a second and it'll become the home button. Swipe over it from left to right or right to left and bring up your recent open apps. Amazing.
It removes the keys from the screen and is actually really intuitive once you've spent half an hour with it. Big fan of this.
There is a dark mode in built into the systems battery settings. I'm personally not a fan of dark modes so it's not really something I will utilise, but it's nice that there's an option to turn the whole UI black.
I don't like the app tray layout or look. I've turned on the app drawer, as I don't really like the apps just being on the home screen. It isn't aesthetically pleasing though, mainly due to all of the Huawei apps that you seemingly can't get rid of.
Ew.
I may end up putting the Pixel launcher on here, but for now I will stick with what I have and see where it leads. It isn't offensive, but it could look a bit better.
One thing I am already in awe of - taking a screenshot.
No more hold the volume up and power keys - just use your knuckle to tap on the screen twice. And you have a screen grab. AMAZING.
Or, use your knuckle to draw a square around something on your screen and it will take a screen print of what you've drawn around.
It works every time without a hitch. Really impressive!
Camera.
I've taken three photos so far ha.
Here they are. I live on a new build plot so houses behind me are still being built. That's why I have flags leading up my road with the developers name on in case you're wondering! We face the front of the estate.
But I thought it'd be a good opportunity to test out the optical zoom of the camera and see how it fared from my front door.
What do you think:
Bear in mind, I didn't move from my front door for all of these pics. Same place for every one shot one after the other after I clicked the zoom buttons.
Me personally? I am pretty happy with those results!
I'll be taking the phone out over the weekend (weather dependant) to get some snaps, so expect to see more with a bit of luck.
That's it for now. I do waffle on - sorry. But I like to be through in my early impressions!
I'll post more as I learn more about it!
