I have a X too, yeah. :)

X is my primary device.

The size of the P20 Pro is definitely bigger. I wish the normal size P20 had the triple camera as I'd have opted for that instead. I had a hands on with that and it was near perfect. Slightly bigger than the X but not too big. I was really impressed with it.

Here's some snaps of them side by side anyway.

There's not much between them width wise, which is why it doesn't feel massive I think.

Impressive phone. A world beater sure. In America, consider as spy phone. Too many lens projecting to capture sensitive areas.

Aneres11, do you have issues with google maps like some people where it is quite laggy?

If not, do you have the resolution at FHD+ or HD+? I’ve read that for some it is laggy at FHD but not at FD.

I should be receiving mine soon but was wondering if it is an issue or not.

Thanks

Hey. Checking Google Maps was actually one of the first things that I did ha and nope, no problems what so ever for me. I watched the Recombu video though of his issues with it and couldn't believe it!

But no, mine is fine.
I also have the resolution set to FHD and not getting any lag what so ever.
Hope that helps.

One thing I am miffed about though. Apparently these come with a clear case from Huawei in the box. Mine didn't come with one. The cardboard sleeve in the box that has all the papers in was empty (aside from the papers) which were just rattling round.
Gutted. Would have used that too.

Must be a factory thing as it was all sealed up.

Could you consider to make it your primary phone and skip your iPhone X ?

Heads up for fellow Brits?!

So went into EE store to have some hands on with the Huawei P20 Pro, and they have the Huawei P20 Pro on pay as you go, for just £499 when you top up £10.

£509 in total, which is much cheaper than what Carphone Warehouse are charging £799.

However, you cannot claim the free headphones anymore but for £499 for a flagship phone only launched is a bargain price.

Tempted to try it as I'm on EE but my S9 has been a revelation! Argh!

Not long got mine and quickly set it up.

Unfortunately google maps for me is laggy on FHD+ (similar to the Recombu video) but fine on HD+. No idea why this would be and hoping an update can fix this.

Interestingly I do have a clear case in the box. It was in the cardboard that the sim ejection tool is attached too.

First impressions are positive but it’s only been an hour or so.

How are you finding the battery. I’ve heard it’s very good.

Absolutely not.

In my short time with it, I much prefer my iPhone X.

As a second device though, it's really good for me.

Some more thoughts.

Today I have been looking after my friends dog as he's been working a long shift all day and his GF is at a friends who she went to uni with or something.

Anyway, seemed like a good opportunity to test the camera.
It's good day to day. But it could be better.
As some reviewers have said in their vid / site reviews, the AI is really annoying. Whilst it's this magical AI that gives the fantastic quality to low light shots, it's extremely frustrating and not particularly accurate the majority of the time.

For instance, it kept thinking that the dog was a cat. There's both a cat and dog AI option (no idea what they do differently), but the dog we were looking after is not cat like in the slightest lol, so that was odd. :D

I also encountered similar issues when snapping some leaves just up the road when taking her for a walk. It applied a 'food filter'. There was no food in site. Very frustrating. It also sometimes tries to make your photo a portrait style photo, despite not being in the portrait mode within the camera.
Why would it do that?!

When it comes to actually pointing and shooting a photo, the P20 Pro falls way behind the X, the S9 and the Pixel 2.

Its results though, do often come out pretty great when the AI isn't driving you insane. Or, when it gets it right.

Tired lol.

The leaf pics are not the most interesting, but the detail is pretty great.

I discovered an always on display tucked away in the settings.
It isn't as good as that found in the Pixel 2 or S9 though. There doesn't seem to be any notification of apps outside of Huawei's own like phone, messages etc.

eAhO7Pu.jpg

Still, it's good that I can see the time at the very least but this could definitely be better.

One thing that I absolutely HATE and do not understand, is this weird screen issue which appears to be a 'Huawei thing'.

When I set the phone up and it was all ready yesterday, I noticed that when I went into some apps, the brightness would flick down. I just rolled my eyes and thought, must turn auto brightness off! I never have auto on with my phones. I hate the screen changing depending on where I am, I always tend to keep it pretty bright and just knock it down or up manually as I see fit.

So I went in and turned it off. Then noticed it was still doing it. So I checked some more settings, seen I had this 'natural tone' turned on which I thought might do it. So turned that off. Still doing it.
So I googled it, expecting to find nothing but there was loads of returns. Apparently this has been going on since the P9 and EMUI 5.
Someone said to go into developer options and turn off something to do with sun levels and the screen. Then to restart the phone.
So I did that. Rebooted. Still doing it.

As far as I've read, Huawei acknowledged it was an error in EMUI 5, but this is still happening. It is infuriating.
Truly don't understand why it is doing it. The actual brightness level doesn't seem to change when it does it - even when I go out of the app and back to the home screen when it flicks back up. So it doesn't seem like it's display setting related.

Moving on, I've struggled a bit with the stock launcher. After trying to get the Pixel launcher on, which took some time, I finally managed it this afternoon.
Feels much better now and the app draw finally looks clean again haha.

B92qmjD.jpg

I had read that battery life was really good on the phone, and I can confirm it has been absolutely fantastic. I do not know how they've done it, but this is one of the best (if not the best) phones for battery life I have ever used.
Can't fault that at all.

Still gutted I didn't get a case in the box, but I'll get over it.

Will post more thoughts next week after a bit more time with it, but I do like the phone. It's obvious that the zoom and the low light camera are where it shines, although it does do a decent job when the AI gets it right with everyday snaps too.

.

Can I ask if the time changes and keeps up to date.

I switched it on on mine and it seems to stay at the time that the AOD came on and doesn’t update to the current time.

Thanks

It's a real shame that it's not likely to ever be sold by US carriers. Huawei makes some pretty great stuff. I can't afford to just buy outright like i used to though.

Nice except that speaker grill reminds me of this. Something they can improve on the next gen.

That must be in store only, I can’t see it on their website.

At £799 I was debating it but for £509 you can count me in.

Battery life for me hasn't been great today.

Haven't used the phone much today and only have around 40 minutes screen on time and my battery is at 53% from 7am this morning.

Not terrible but was expecting better. Maybe after a few days it'll improve. Fingers crossed

Don't mean to be one of those posters lol but this hasn't been the case for me.
The phone is meant to be one of the best for battery life so it's surprising you're not having a good experience. It's been stellar for me so far although yesterday's did seem better than today's weirdly.

Grrrr...

I'm really happy with my iPhone X, got only slightly tempted by the S9+ but then forgot about it again, but the p20 Pro is making it very hard for me to resist. I must resist. I must. Must... Darn!!!

Now this Huawei Mate RS is much closer to the ideal device with in-screen fingerprint so you can unlock it when on a table, rear fingerprint for unlocking when pulling out of pocket, up to 512GB internal storage, centered non-protruding back camera sensors and no notch. Only thing it needs is dual front-facing speakers.

People here laugh at Apple asking so much for a phone and you link a phone that is about a thousand dollars more expensive than the most expensive iPhone.

The Mate RS is pretty impressive! But oh so expensive...... But at least they made the product and as more companies make this type of phone the cost to do so will go down. Bravo Huawei :)

That phone is really awesome looking. Call me shallow though but I could never get it because of the "Porsche Design" wording on the front. That would drive me bonkers.
Yeah....that is a little over the top for me too :)
